  • Patent number: 10126813
Abstract: A 360-degree camera captures images from every direction. The user specifies the region of interest for the camera with a gesture, for example by pointing with one end of the device to a specific direction. The region of interest is saved as metadata with the image or video recording. The device may assign the user among multiple persons near the device by detecting from the omnidirectional view who has been the last person in physical contact with the device. The region of interest may be assigned with voice commands.

  • Patent number: 10057580
Abstract: A general entropy coding method for source symbols is disclosed. This method determines a prefix part and any suffix part for the current symbol. The method divides prefix of the source symbol into at least two parts by comparing a test value related to the prefix part against a threshold. If the test value is greater than or equal to the threshold, the method derives a first binary string by binarizing a first prefix part related to the prefix part using a first variable length code. If the test value related to the prefix part is less than the threshold, the method derives a second binary string by binarizing a second prefix part related to the prefix part using a second variable length code or a first fixed-length code. The method then encodes at least one of the first binary string and the second binary string using a CABAC mode.

  • Patent number: 10044974
Abstract: Innovations in encoding of video pictures in a high-resolution chroma sampling format (such as YUV 4:4:4) using a video encoder operating on coded pictures in a low-resolution chroma sampling format (such as YUV 4:2:0) are presented. For example, according to a set of decision rules, high chroma resolution details are selectively encoded on a region-by-region basis such that increases in bit rate (due to encoding of sample values for the high chroma resolution details) happen when and where corresponding increases in chroma resolution are likely to improve quality in noticeable ways. In this way, available encoders operating on coded pictures in the low-resolution chroma sampling format can be effectively used to provide high chroma resolution details.

  • Patent number: 10038917
Abstract: Innovations are presented that reduce the computational complexity of video encoding by selectively skipping certain evaluation stages during intra-picture prediction. A video encoder receives and encodes a current picture. As part of the encoding, for a current block of the current picture, the video encoder evaluates at least some intra-picture prediction modes (“IPPMs”). According to a search strategy, the video encoder selectively skips time-consuming evaluation of certain IPPMs for the current block when those IPPMs are not expected to improve rate-distortion performance, which can dramatically speed up the encoding process. For example, the video encoder conditionally performs a gradient search among angular IPPMs. Or, as another example, the video encoder selectively skips evaluation of IPPMs depending on a cost of encoding the current block using motion compensation. Or, as another example, the video encoder prioritizes IPPMs evaluated for a block of chroma sample values.

  • Patent number: 10037470
Abstract: In a pitch angle estimation apparatus, an image acquirer sequentially acquires images in a forward or rearward direction of a vehicle. Each image is referred to as a frame. A movement amount calculator extracts a feature point from each of the images acquired by the image acquirer and calculates an amount of movement of the feature point in a vertical direction of the image. A pitch angle calculator calculates a pitch angle of the vehicle based on the amount of movement of the feature point. An output unit outputs the pitch angle calculated by the pitch angle calculator. A low frequency component calculator calculates a low frequency component of the pitch angle calculated by the pitch angle calculator. An output determiner determines whether to output the pitch angle based on the magnitude of the low frequency component calculated by the low frequency component calculator.

  • Patent number: 10021402
Abstract: Systems and methods of media servers for estimating the video quality of experience (QoE) of human viewers of video content or communications at video receivers. With these systems and methods, a media server can collect, within a plurality of predetermined time windows synchronized in time, operational parameters of ingress and egress networks over which such video content or communications can be transmitted, as well as coding parameters of a video decoder and a video encoder within the media server. Having collected the operational parameters of the ingress network and egress network and the coding parameters of the video decoder and video encoder, the media server can determine QoE scores associated with some or all the ingress network, the video decoder, the video encoder, and the egress network, and estimate a resulting video QoE for a human viewer at a video receiver as a predefined combination of the respective QoE scores.
