  • Patent number: 5749689
Abstract: The invention relates to a drill with a drilling shank, particularly with a screw shank comprising a self-tapping thread, and with a fork-shaped hard-material plate-shaped drilling tip disposed opposite the driving end of the shank, said drilling tip being inserted into a holder in the shank, said holder comprising two grooves, disposed diametrically with respect to each other in the shank, for accommodating prongs of the drilling tip. The shank terminates bluntly in an essentially radial end surface from which the grooves extend towards the driving end in such a manner that exclusively the prongs of the drilling tip, pressed axially into the grooves, both hold the drilling tip self-lockingly on the shank and also transmit the torque from the shank to the drilling tip.

  • Patent number: 5743691
Abstract: A novel clinch-type fastener member is engaged through first and second workpieces to form a mechanically locked joint which is highly resistant to vibrational loosening. The fastener member has a first portion and a second portion defined by a shank portion which extends therefrom. The first portion has a protuberance, formed from a ring, thereon which extends outwardly therefrom. The shank portion has a projection, formed from a ring, spaced a predetermined distance from the first portion to define a retaining groove. To engage the fastener member with the workpieces, the fastener member is rotated into engagement therewith. The protuberance on the first portion engages a top surface of the first workpiece and rotational and compressive forces are applied to the fastener member thereby causing the protuberance to deform the first workpiece material to cause the material to flow into the retaining groove provided of the fastener member.

  • Patent number: 5743690
Abstract: A threaded self-locking fastener, having a hollow body open at both ends and an elongated central through bore with a slot extending the length of the hollow body.Version 1 has sharp edges on the slot that dig into the bore of the work piece to prevent rotation. The fastener is used in conjunction with an internal driver. The driver located in the bore of the fastener engages detents to produce rotary drive motion. The driver also has a means of manipulating the first and second edges to facilitate assembly and disassembly.Version 2 has curved or chamfered edges in the slot and inward facing lobes also used in association with a driver. Rotation of the driver against the lobes causes the tubular fastener to be reduced in diameter against spring tension thereby allowing the fastener to freely rotate in the threaded bore of the work piece. By releasing the driver, the fastener expands and self locks in the threaded bore.

  • Patent number: 5741099
Abstract: A self-tapping, blind setting rivet assembly to secure two or more work pieces together and suitable for power or hand tool application. The rivet assembly comprises a rivet body having a hollow tubular sleeve and an enlarged flattened head. The rivet body surrounds a mandrel comprising a shank which is terminated in a screw tip. This screw tip punctures, spreads, and self-taps an aperture in the work pieces through which the rivet sleeve passes. The mandrel's shank may have a weakened area of reduced diameter adjacent to the screw tip which allows detachment of shaft following application of sufficient axial force to the shank. This application of force causes the tapered shoulder section of the screw tip to compress and deform the rivet sleeve which sets the rivet.
