Abstract: An interactive television system with programming-related links is provided. The system may include user television equipment on which interactive program guide and non-program-guide applications may be implemented. Information that is displayed in a display screen for a non-program-guide application may be related to programming. A display screen or overlay for programming that is related to the information may be displayed when a user selects the displayed information. The display or overlay for the programming may include advertisements, video, graphics, options, or programming descriptions. The display screen or overlay may have been displayed by the program guide application.

Abstract: A method and system of providing copy protection of video analog and digital signals and the like, wherein the signals are transmitted via a digital delivery network, and may comprise, for example, pay-per-view (PPV) program materials protected by copyrights of respective program rights holders. The right holders authorize video service providers (3) to apply copy protection to the program material. The copy protection process is supplied to the rights holders or the service providers (3) by a copy protection process licensor. The video service providers (3) supply suitable copy protection control software via respective control and billing (tracking) centers to generate commands which activate, control and reconfigure the copy protection process being applied to the programs being transmitted.

Abstract: A receiver includes: a band detection unit that detects a frequency band within which the receiver can be connected to a transmitter by radio; a quality detection unit that detects the transmission quality level of video data, which is transmitted from the transmitter, using the frequency band detected by the band detection unit; and a notification unit that notifies an area in which the frequency band within which the receiver can be connected to the transmitter by radio is detected and the transmission quality level is detected to be higher than a predetermined threshold.

Abstract: A video/audio system includes an interface device that receives a plurality of audio and video signals from a plurality of sources. The interface device combines these signals into various combinations and transmits the combinations to a receiver. The receiver is configured to interface one of the combinations of signals with a user. In this regard, the receiver allows the user to select one of the combinations, and in response, the receiver separates the video signal(s) of the selected combination from the audio signal(s) of the selected combination. Then, the receiver renders the video signal(s) via a display device and produces a sound defined by the audio signal(s) via a speaker. Accordingly, the user is able to control which set of audio and video signals are interfaced with the user.

Abstract: A method for controlling an apparatus such as a television signal receiver having a parental control function allows users to change a setting associated with the parental control function without first entering a password, while also preventing children from circumventing and defeating the parental control function. The method is also useful for informing parents if a child attempts to change a setting in an effort to circumvent and defeat the parental control function. According to an exemplary embodiment, the method includes steps of enabling a user to change a predetermined setting associated with the parental control function without entering a password, and disabling at least one of an audio output and a video output of the apparatus responsive to the change.

Abstract: Various embodiments of the present invention relate to systems and methods for providing content to a subscriber of a first video service provider through a second video service provider and for facilitating the subscriber incurring a fee for viewing the content. In particular embodiments, the systems and methods authenticate a subscriber of a first video service provider and allow the subscriber to view content through a second video service provider and incur the fee for viewing such content. Various embodiments may make use of a content brokerage provider to facilitate the brokerage of content between video servicer providers. Further, in various embodiments, the first video service provider (and/or content brokerage provider) bills the subscriber for the fee incurred for viewing the content through the second video service provider and, in particular embodiments, a portion of the fee is paid to the second video service provider.

Abstract: A method and system for provisioning a specific device to receive video and/or data services from a plurality of service providers at a physical drop in a digital broadband network serviced by a telecommunication services provider utilizes a broadcast manager for transmitting an electronic message in a modified format determined by the telecommunication services provider, wherein the electronic message contains information identifying the physical drop associated with the specific device. A broadband digital terminal, in communication with the broadcast manager and the physical port, receives the electronic message, stores the information, and upon receiving a sign-on request from a requesting device that is requesting access to one of the video and/or data services, determines whether the requesting device is authorized to access the requested video and/or data service based on the stored information.

Abstract: The present invention relates to improvements in program viewing apparatus and methods, some of which are now commonly referred to as personal video recorder (PVR) and program guide features in television sets, set top boxes and other video devices. The invention provides for a user display such as a flat panel program display device, a user remote for the user to control operations and features, program data storage for storing programs and related information, removable data storage for storing programs and related information on removable storage media. Also included is a data manager which functions include response to the user's desires via the user remote to control receiving and storing programs and select received or stored programs to be displayed on the user display device. The data manager may also be responsive to receive, store and display other services such as programming guide services to provide enhanced program viewing and storage management as directed by the user.

Abstract: In an interactive network-based personal video recording system, a user interface is provided that allows viewers to search a database of program guide information according to program title, indexed program attributes such as actor and director, and key word. Viewer interaction is by way of a remote control unit.

Abstract: High definition media content processing techniques are described in which enhanced media content rendering techniques may be performed to output high definition media content. In an implementation, luma keying may be provided to define clear pixels in a composite output using an optimum set of graphics processing instructions. In another implementation, techniques are described which may provide clear rectangles in a composite output of one or more video streams. Clear rectangles to appear in the composite output are configured by a media playback application. A texture is arrived at to represent a union of each of the clear rectangles and is applied to form the clear rectangles in the composite output. In another implementation, capture techniques are described in which an image to capture is resolved as strips to an intermediate texture and then from the texture to a capture buffer in system memory.

Abstract: The current invention provides a system for distributing content data to user locations. The content data preferably includes digital video data that is available on demand from a requesting location. A system server stores user accounts and generated customized program schedules for the user account based on user criteria which includes user preferences. Authorized users access their accounts to modify user criteria and to select program transmissions. Preferably, a computer and a television set receive program transmissions from a system network, wherein the computer provides a logical interface between the television set and content data transmitted over the system network.

Abstract: Content ratings and recommendations is described. In an embodiment, a ratings service compiles ratings of programs for a rating system that is associated with a group of viewers, where a viewer of the group establishes the rating system, and where at least some of the viewers of the group rate the programs for the group of viewers. A recommendation service then provides program recommendations to the viewers of the group based on the rating system.

Abstract: Providing interactive access to video programming and video content information in a multimedia system. A processing device of the multimedia system receives video content information associated with video programming that is to be broadcast. The video content information includes at least video identification information and video content information. The display device of the multimedia system presents a first interface image that presents the video content information for one of the video programs of the video programming. In response to viewer input, a second interface image is displayed on the display device presenting video content information for another one of the video programs of the video programming or for more detailed information associated with the video program. In this manner, the viewer can conveniently navigate through the video content information and identify information that is useful in selecting a program to watch.

Abstract: A method for searching a frequency band to locate a channel. The method includes the steps of setting an initial frequency and a first frequency step; determining a frequency point based on the initial frequency and the first frequency step; determining whether the frequency point satisfies a first condition, which is continuously detecting a horizontal signal a predetermined number of times. When the first condition is satisfied, the frequency point is recorded as an entrance point. A second frequency step based on the entrance point determines a second frequency point, wherein the second frequency step is less than the first frequency step. It is then determined if a channel exists at the second frequency point. The entrance point is recorded as the updated initial frequency for the next search. The described steps are repeated for the entire frequency band.

Abstract: A display apparatus for displaying color images on a screen by projecting each-color image beams modulated with a display device includes a memory storing correction data exhibiting a registration deviation amount on the screen; a displacement calculating unit calculating the registration deviation amount every one pixel of at least one-color signal based on the correction data stored in the memory; a correcting unit correcting the signal level of the one-color signal so that the signal level becomes in proportion to a brightness level on the screen; and a registration deviation correcting unit correcting the registration deviation of the one-color signal every one pixel by interpolation arithmetic processing of the color signal corrected with the correcting unit based on the registration deviation amount calculated with the displacement calculating unit, wherein the display device of the corresponding color is driven by the color signal corrected with the registration deviation correcting unit.

Abstract: In a digital broadcast receiving apparatus, digital broadcast signals provided by a digital broadcast method are supplied to various types of external units and are effectively utilized. In the above apparatus, a descrambler descrambles a transport stream output from a front end unit and supplies it to a digital interface and a demultiplexer. The demultiplexer extracts from the transport stream a compressed video signal and a compressed audio signal of a program specified by a user, and supplies the extracted signals to an MPEG decoder. The MPEG decoder decompresses the supplied video signal and the audio signal and supplies them to the digital interface, an NTSC encoder, and an audio signal D/A converter. The digital interface supplies either of the transport stream or the decompressed data to a digital external unit under the control of the controller.

Abstract: A microcomputer 18 obtains a variable RRT from a broadcast signal and stores, in a recording medium, the variable RRT in association with a physical channel; sets a viewing restriction flag for an item in the variable RRT based on an operation input from a user; applies viewing restriction to the broadcast signal when rating information indicates the level at which the viewing restriction flag has been set in the variable RRT; and, when a logical channel is not associated with the selected physical channel, tunes, as an alternative channel, a physical channel with which a logical channel has been associated in the channel map of the other tuner, and associates a variable RRT associated with the alternative channel, with the selected physical channel.

Abstract: There is provided a digital broadcast receiving apparatus capable of notifying a user that an item in itself exists even if a blank exists in the name portion of an item in the variable RRT to prevent the user from omitting setting. The microcomputer 18 acquires a rating region table (RRT) from a transport steam (TS) signal and attaches a flag capable of restricting viewing to each level in the RTT based on inputs entered by a user while displaying the RTT on a screen. If rating information including the TS signal expresses the level on which the flag capable of restricting viewing is attached, viewing of a program including the rating information is restricted, a blank in the level, item and table names included in the RRT is detected and the detected blank is substituted with a predetermined character string.

Abstract: The present invention provides a method for reducing channel change time of an IPTV and an IPTV service provision server for implementing the same, which comprise: determining the type of each of individual channels to be provided to a user and the number of additional intraframes required to be inserted into video data to be provided via the channels; inserting the additional intraframes corresponding to the determined number into the video data; encoding the video data; and transmitting the encoded video data to a first router or a second router according to the determined channel type, before receiving a channel request signal from the user.
