Abstract: An advertisement system and method are provided for inserting into an end user communication message a background reference to an advertisement. In some embodiments, the background reference causes an advertisement image to be tiled, or watermarked, across an end user screen behind the text of an e-mail message or public posting. A message server inserts the background reference after receiving a message originally sent from an end user originator and before sending the message to be delivered to an end user recipient. When necessary, the message server will convert at least a portion of the message into a proper format, such as HTML, before inserting the background reference to an advertisement, which is preferably selected in accordance with end user recipient demographic information and/or ad exposure statistics.

Abstract: A computer system, and methods for making and using it, for manipulating digital electrical signals to produce an illustration of a decomposition of property into separately valued components. The computer system includes a digital electrical computer controlled by a processor. There is a first logic means controlling the processor in manipulating digital electrical signals representing input data to the computer, the input data characterizing at least two components decomposed from the property, the manipulating including transforming the digital electrical signals into modified digital electrical signals representing respective values for each of the components, the values being computed to reflect taxation for the components. Input means is coupled to the computer and operable for converting the input data into the digital electrical signals and communicating the digital electrical signals to the computer.

Abstract: A method and apparatus is provided for monitoring the processing of a group of articles having different properties, for example differing weights and/or quality grades. The method includes the steps of obtaining information about the differing properties of the group, using this information to provide a main visual model of the property distribution within the group, and providing a first subsidiary visual model relating to the processing of a first sub-group of articles from within the group, the provision of the first subsidiary model causing a modified form of the main visual model to appear, related to the remaining articles of the group after removal of the articles forming the first sub-group. The method is particularly effective for use in monitoring the processing of poultry carcasses being conveyed in succession along a path, for sorting by weight and grade of carcass.

The phenomenon has a range of future outcomes and a future time of maturity. The contract data includes a set of probabilities of occurrence for each outcome within the range, and a consideration due a counterparty at or after the time of matching. At least one counterparty inputs registering data that includes a set of probabilities of occurrence for each outcome in the range. A data processing means prices and matches a contract for the phenomenon from the contract data and registering data.

Abstract: A system and method relates to the field of building and administrating a patient management and health care management database containing data relevant to the clinical care of patients, to the management of the practices to which the patients belong, and to outcomes of that health care and practice management. The disclosed system encompasses (i) designing and administering paper and pen and hand held computer survey instruments; (ii) administering and collecting completed surveys (iii) building and managing a database of information collected from the surveys; (iv) analyzing data collected from the surveys; (v) and providing clinical practices with summary information. Summary information may be used to improve patient care, health outcomes, and the management of physician practices.

Abstract: A system for selectively blocking a current remote purchase request based on information gained from at least a previous remote purchase request. The device includes a first data input subsystem capable of receiving purchase request information set including a credit card number, merchandise descriptions and origin. A memory subsystem receives the information set from the previous and current remote purchase requests. A logic subsystem compares the purchase request record of the current remote purchase request with the purchase request record of the previous remote purchase request and automatically blocks the current remote purchase request if the comparison meets any one of a predetermined set of criteria. At least one criterion includes a condition that the current purchase request origin match the previous purchase request origin.

Abstract: A technique for showing running time by sections for a tollway includes: a unit toll collector installed at a unit toll gate of a tollway for calculating a running time of vehicles leaving the unit toll gate for each entrance toll gate; indicators installed at main points of the tollway for indicating running time by sections; and a traffic control center connected to the unit toll collector and a predetermined communication network for receiving the running time of vehicles for each entrance toll gate, averaging it to obtain the overall running time by sections, and outputting it to the indicators.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for detecting unauthorized copies of software. Each copy of software is uniquely identified by a license number. Each use of each copy is termed a session. Each copy's sessions are numbered sequentially. Each session is assigned a random session stamp when it begins. For each copy, a stamp history is kept, giving the next session number and the session stamps for prior sessions. If software copies having the same license number are used on two different computers, their stamp histories will show different next-session numbers and/or different session stamps for prior sessions, indicating two copies of the software exist, which may be, e.g., a license violation. Each software copy maintains a stamp history database (SHD) comprising a stamp history for itself and for other copies of software for which it has received a stamp history.

Abstract: A method and system for facilitating digital commerce using a secure digital commerce system is provided. The secure digital commerce system is arranged according to a client/server architecture and includes a modularized DCS client and DCS server. The DCS client and the DCS server are incorporated into an online purchasing system, such as a virtual store, to perform the purchase and online delivery of electronic content. The DCS client includes a set of components which include a secured copy of the merchandise and various components needed to license and purchase the merchandise and to unsecure and process (e.g., execute) the licensed merchandise. The DCS client communicates with the DCS server to download the components onto a customer's computer system and to license and purchase a requested item of merchandise.

Abstract: A service terminal facility is provided at a public access location, for example in a hotel, hospital or airport, the service terminal facility available for providing electronic information services to users, in response to input of a portable data storage medium, for example a smart card or the like. A smart card contains stored data describing user specified information such as contacts names, personal details and medical information and personal interest information. The service terminal comprises a search engine for searching the user data and comparing data types within the user data with general data stored locally at the service terminal. The service terminal selects data corresponding to data types specified in the user data and displays these on the graphical user interface at the service terminal, or at a user interface connected with the service terminal.

Each licensee LMS includes one or more components that operate to grant pay-per-use licenses for software applications, including data collection on amount of usage licenses granted, and to monitor operational states of the pay-per-use license granting and data collection operations, including periodic reporting of state and usage license granted data to a licensor LMS. Each licensor LMS includes components that operate to receive, store and process state and usage license granted data for the software applications from the licensee systems, including verification of timely periodic reporting from the licensee LMS.

The method comprises the steps of: prompting the user at a data terminal to select a destination, password, and call type; sending a set-up message to the data network; selecting a virtual private network provider through the data network; the virtual private network provider giving an encryption key to the user, and then prompting the user for a password and a user identification; encrypting the password, and sending the user identification and the encrypted password to the virtual private network provider; the virtual private network provider decrypting the encrypted password, and verifying the password; the virtual private network provider providing an authorization code; and the data terminal transferring the data through the data network to the final destination, using the authorization code.

Abstract: Methods and apparatus for transforming scoreable transaction data into financial data features are disclosed. In one aspect, a computer-implemented method transforms transaction data into a financial data feature for assessing credit risks. The financial data feature is extracted from the transaction data. The method involves obtaining the transaction data from a data source, and performing a set of operations on the transaction data to transform the transaction data into the financial data feature. The set of operations is selected only from a predefined set of classes of operations which are interrelated by a predefined order of precedence. Each operation in the set of operations is performed in an order based on the predefined order of precedence of a class associated with each operator.

Meeting support objects are representations of dynamic information that is used to support various common activities performed in meetings, such as decision making, assigning action items, agenda tracking, etc. Meeting support objects are defined by a domain object class. The domain object class defines attributes, a set of action rules and layouts. The attributes describe the information or data associated with the meeting support object. Further, the underlying attribute values represented by the icon may change, based on predefined spatial parameters, as the result of user actions performed on the icon (e.g. via a gesture) or upon the occurrence of a system event. The set of action rules map user actions and system events to operations that may be performed on the meeting support object. The layouts define how meeting support object information is displayed as an icon.

Abstract: An improved system is realized with an arrangement which takes advantage of affiliations that allow concentration of billing. In situations where a party is willing to serve as a financial surrogate for some subscribers of a services provider, savings can be realized by sending the bills for charges accrued by those subscribers ("affiliated subscribers") directly to such a surrogate. The surrogate pays the bills of the affiliated subscribers and may make its own arrangement with the affiliated subscribers to be appropriately compensated. The disclosed method and arrangement employs an affiliation database file to provide information as to who is a financial surrogate for others. Data which affiliates particular subscribers to particular financial surrogates may be under control of the services provider or under control of the financial surrogates. The billing process utilizes the information that identifies financial surrogates and the information about the affiliations of affiliated subscribers.
