  • Patent number: 6760597
Abstract: A power control method for reverse links used in soft handoff mode between a mobile and base stations of a CDMA wireless communication network. Each of the base stations computes a setpoint based on the quality of received frames. The lowest setpoint value is then used as a threshold for inner loop operation causing at least one of the reverse links to convey information in compliance with a target FER set by the network.

  • Patent number: 6748237
Abstract: An apparatus, program product, and method automate the selection of audio broadcast signals based upon a user preference criterion, typically by receiving a first audio broadcast signal from a first source, and concurrently monitoring a second source to locate a second audio broadcast signal matching a user preference criterion. The user preference criterion may represent a particular type of song, program, artist, genre, etc., or in the alternative may represent one or more specific programs, songs, etc. By monitoring for sources that match the user preference criterion concurrently with receiving a signal from a first source, automation of the selection of matching audio broadcast signals (e.g., by notifying a user of a match, automatically selecting a matching audio broadcast signal, etc.) is greatly facilitated.

  • Patent number: 6735431
Abstract: Various kinds of presentation information specific to an area in a radio-communication system can be transmitted to a one or more specific radio-communication terminals at the same time. A user is able to receive commercial information, for example, from an information provider as presentation information when a user enters a location-registration area. A user terminal transmits a request for a location registration and the location-registration area and a terminal ID are transmitted to the information providing apparatus, which searches a database for a subscriber ID by using the terminal ID as a key and further searches a database for presentation-information ID by using the subscriber ID and the location-registration area information as a pair of keys. The presentation information is then transmitted to the terminal through a USCCH channel and displayed on a display unit of the terminal.

  • Patent number: 6600914
Abstract: An emergency call recognition system which is activated when an off-hook situation occurs, which recognizes when an emergency number is dialed with or without the presence of a dial tone, and which provides the caller a communication channel to complete such a call. The present invention is used to give priority to emergency telephone calls. Typically the present invention is used in wireless local loop systems, however the present invention can also be incorporated into a conventional telephone system. The present invention uses an emergency call recognition system to determine if a person is dialing an emergency telephone number. If the emergency call recognition system recognizes a dialed telephone number as an emergency telephone number, then the caller is provided with a communication channel to complete the telephone call. The caller is provided a communication channel even if all of the communication channels are in use. This is accomplished by disconnecting calls that are not of an emergency nature.

  • Patent number: 6529727
Abstract: A method and apparatus for performing over-the-air activation for wireless communications service subscriptions within a wireless communications system. The method includes providing a plurality of subscription modules each having a unique identifier that corresponds to a plurality of non-activated service subscriptions. An activation period is established for each of the non-activated service subscriptions within which the corresponding subscriptions must be activated or deleted from the system. A list of unique identifiers and their associated activation periods is stored in the wireless communications system. To activate the subscription, a subscription module is mated with a mobile equipment device. An over-the-air activation request is transmitted to the wireless communications system that includes the unique identifier associated with said selected subscription module.
