  • Patent number: 4382389
Abstract: A rack and pinion gearing comprising a helical rack and a spiral pinion. The rack has a structure defined by a radius, a distance from the axis to tooth crest, a helix angle, and a pressure angle determined from the viewpoint of applied kinematics so as to produce a balancing moment of rotation. The structure keeps the rack free from inclination and rocking about the axis which would otherwise result in a biting effect.

  • Patent number: 4382307
Abstract: A transfer bridge for ramps. The bridge includes a bridge plate, the rear end of which is pivotable about a horizontal axis. The bridge plate is provided with a retractable and extendable extension which in turn is provided with tongues capable of being push-in. The extension is for placement upon the platform to be loaded or unloaded, and the tongues are automatically secured or arrested in the pushed-in condition. A drive, such as a piston, is associated with the tongues, or with the extension carrying the tongues, for retracting the tongues or the extension, subsequent to a pushing-in of the tongues, to form a gap between the tongues on the one hand and the platform (walls) on the other hand.

  • Patent number: 4382719
Abstract: According to an embodiment thereof, the stabilizer set comprises a first, basic, friction rock stabilizer for insertion into a bore formed within an earth structure, and a second, supplementary, friction rock stabilizer, having an annulus for supporting a roof plate, for insertion into the first stabilizer for frictional engagement therewith to provide (a) yieldability of the roof plate and/or (b) reinforcement of the first stabilizer. The methods of the invention, then, comprise inserting a supplementary friction rock stabilizer into a first-inserted friction rock stabilizer in order to reinforce the first, or to provide a necessary yieldability when it is anticipated that the roof plate may become unduly loaded.

  • Patent number: 4379653
Abstract: The disclosure relates to a floating screed type asphalt paver provided with extendable, retractable auxiliary screed units which, in their retracted positions, are mounted in front of the main screed and carry edger plates. By mounting the screed extensions in front of the main screed units, it is possible to retract the extension units without interrupting paving operations. A strike-off plate may be positioned in front of the extension units to limit the presence of paving material between them and/or the extension units may be provided with bevelled inner edges for displacing such material during retraction. Novel arrangements are provided for mounting and adjusting the screed extensions.

  • Patent number: 4379354
Abstract: A device is provided for releasably locking a parked vehicle to an adjacent loading dock. The device includes a vertically adjustable carriage mounted on the front wall of the dock, and a hook-like member supported by the carriage for independent rotary movement between an operative vehicle-interlocking position and an inoperative vehicle-release position. A carriage-supported first member is disposed coaxially with the axis of said hook-like member and moves therewith as a unit. A flexible second member engages the first member and upon a predetermined pulling force being applied to said second member, causes the hook-like member to move to the operative vehicle-interlocking position. A unit is operatively connected to the flexible second member whereby the predetermined pulling force applied thereto is enhanced so as to effect a substantially greater turning force being exerted on the first member.

  • Patent number: 4376596
Abstract: A plurality of sections of portable roadway are removably interconnected for use during periods of adverse weather conditions during which soil conditions are such that it is impossible to build a permanent road, or when the economics are such that a temporary road is advantageous. Each section consists of a hardwood frame which is connected to and supports a plywood surface. At the front and rear of each section, a transverse stiffening bar extends through and laterally to the side of the section. Connecting members are attached between the free ends of these stiffening bars. In the center of each section, a lifting bar is disposed to aid in removal and placement of the sections in an expeditious manner.

  • Patent number: 4376319
Abstract: An improved maintenance assembly for a dockboard having a ramp and a hinged lip. The maintenance assembly includes a lip locking member which is slidably contained in a bracket attached to the bottom of the ramp. A spring connected to the lip locking member urges the locking member into its stored position. When the lip locking member is extended to engage the bottom of the lip and hold it in an elevated position, the lip locking member engages the lip hinge and pivots slightly to bring a detent into engagement with the bracket and thus lock the lip locking member in its operative position.

  • Patent number: 4376631
Abstract: The subject invention is an emergency fan belt replacement for use in motor vehicles as a temporary remedial measure to supplant the installed conventional fan belt whenever the latter might fail or otherwise become severed during operations. Specifically, the subject invention is a temporary fan belt replacement, with the same cross-sectional configuration and girth as compared to the conventionally used and installed fan belt. The temporary belt herein has a buckle integrally attached to one end of the belt and which buckle receives the opposite, free end of the belt. Further, such buckle is adapted to shorten or lengthen the temporary belt to conform to the required radial distance between the crankshaft pulley and the pulley for the water pump. The aforesaid buckle is further comprised of clip means to lock the free end of the belt protruding beyond the mouth of buckle so that such free end cannot interfere with the revolutionary movements of the subject belt.

  • Patent number: 4374442
Abstract: An expansion joint sealing assembly of the type employing a flexible membrane extending between two relatively rigid elongated elastomeric pads is adapted to seal the gap in the area where a curb and roadway portion of the deck intersect. The assembly is especially useful in situations where the gap extends at a skew angle across the roadway, so that the line of intersection between the curb and roadway portions of the deck, along which the sealing assembly must be bent, is not perpendicular to the longitudinal dimension of the sealing assembly. This creates a complex bending angle for the flexible membrane portion of the seal. In brief terms, the problem is solved by providing laterally extending convolutions in the side edge portions of the membrane and a locking rib on the top of each convolution which fits into an appropriate slot in the elastomeric pad to which each side edge portion of the membrane is connected.

  • Patent number: 4373837
Abstract: In a pier having a series of spaced-apart horizontal pile caps surmounting and connecting the supporting piles together transversely of said pier, there is an integrated one-piece deck supported atop the pile caps so that it can slide thereon. A series of prestressing tendons connect the deck to the pile caps so that when a wharf is struck by a ship, the lengthening and shortening of the tendons and the sliding friction between the deck and the pile caps absorbs the impact load.

  • Patent number: 4372176
Abstract: A method and apparatus for eliminating axial thrust and consequently the need for thrust bearings in parallel shaft and crossed-axis helical drive arrangements is disclosed. According to this invention, a gear with helically cut teeth which maintain a constant profile but have a uniformally tapered top land and bottom land, the top land of which increases in width as the bottom land decreases in width is mounted on a shaft. This tapered tooth helical gear is meshed with a second similar gear mounted in meshing proximity on a second shaft. During operation the axial forces associated with helical gears are resisted by the compressive interfacing, with zero backlash, of the tapered teeth. Thus, the need for thrust bearings is eliminated.

  • Patent number: 4370894
Abstract: The invention relates to an eccentric element for generating oscillations in ground vibrators. The eccentric element comprises an eccentric mass (2) radially movable on a rotatable shaft (1). The mass is movable to assume a position displaced in relation to the centerline (15) of the shaft when the shaft (1) is rotated, thus causing the amplitude of the generated oscillation to be changed. To enable control of the amplitude, the eccentric mass (2) is lockable by means of a displaceable locking piston (9) arranged in a recess (16) in the rotating shaft (1). The locking piston (9) can thus assume a position entirely thrust-back into the recess (16), wherein the eccentric mass (2) is released, or a thrust-out position in which the locking piston fixes the eccentric mass (2) in one of its end positions.
