  • Patent number: 8532613
Abstract: A cellular telephone, system and method are provided which are capable of transferring a portion of or an entire telephone directory consisting of a plurality of telephone numbers to another cellular telephone via a remote central station. The remote central station receives the telephone directory and stores the same in memory for either temporary or permanent storage. The telephone directory can then be transferred from the remote central station to the same or another cellular telephone for storing the telephone directory within a memory of the cellular telephone. An individual, a company, or other entity, utilizing the remote central station, in order to store and transfer a telephone directory from a cellular telephone to the same cellular telephone or to at least another cellular telephone, pays a fee to at least one operator of the remote central station for providing and/or performing the receiving, storing and transferring services.

  • Patent number: 8532621
Abstract: Techniques in a wireless device for use in accessing a common data application with a service network which is external to a plurality of wireless networks are described. The device receives a data session configuration file which includes a list of the plurality of wireless networks mapped against authentication credentials associated with each wireless network. The device communicates with a current one the wireless networks. The device selects from the list one of the authentication credentials that is associated with the current wireless network. The device submits, via the current wireless network, the selected authentication credentials for establishing a packet data session via the current wireless network. The device then accesses, via the current wireless network using the packet data session, the common data application with the service network which is external to the current wireless network.

  • Patent number: 8515414
Abstract: A radar/laser emission detector is augmented with a cellular communications capability to provide the capability to share emission detection information amongst drivers to give other drivers even more advanced warning. A network of a plurality of cellular augmented radar/laser emission detector devices may be formed, each having the capability to source the location of radar or laser emission detections to others requesting access to such information, and each being warned when within a proximity of a recent radar or laser emission detection reported by at least one of the plurality of hybrid radar/laser detector devices. A local area, mobile area wireless network (MAWN) is formed in a cellular network to share radar/laser detection information among drivers. Mobile Position Centers (MPCs) are provided in ANSI-41 networks and Gateway Mobile Location Centers (GMLCs) (GSM networks), to determine other members that are proximate to a device that is detecting radar emission.

  • Patent number: 8509776
Abstract: A method, information processing system, and wireless communication system, initiate a handover scanning procedure with a wireless device. The method includes monitoring a first signal strength measurement (606) transmitted by a wireless device (108). A second signal strength measurement associated with the wireless device (108) that is measured locally is monitored (606). The method also includes determining, in response to monitoring the first signal strength and the second signal strength measurement, if a scan event trigger has been detected (608). A scan initiation message is transmitted (614) to the wireless device (108) in response to a scan event trigger being detected. The scan initiation message signals the wireless device (108) to perform handover scanning procedures.

  • Patent number: 8504061
Abstract: Methods, program products, and systems for multi-tier geofence detection are disclosed. In general, in one aspect, a mobile device can be configured to perform a task when the mobile device enters a geographic region. The mobile device can monitor a current location using a multi-tier approach. A baseband subsystem can monitor a coarse location of the mobile device using various course location parameters, such as a mobile country code (MCC), a location area code (LAC), or a cell identifier (cell ID), as the mobile device moves closer to the geographic region. Upon determining that the mobile device is in a cell that intersects the geographic region, the baseband subsystem can transfer the monitoring to the application subsystem. The task can be performed when the application subsystem determines that the mobile device is currently located in the geographic region.

  • Patent number: 8494540
Abstract: Various embodiments relate to using available spectrum for peer to peer communications and for selecting which of several possibly available channels should be used. Various methods and apparatus are well suited to peer to peer networks in which channel usage decisions are made in a decentralized manner. A wireless terminal generates a list of potential available channels to be used for peer to peer communications, e.g., based on FCC information and/or local sensing. Channels are filled in accordance with a predetermined channel ordering. A wireless terminal migrates between the channels in accordance with changes in the number of peer devices using a channel. The network, in a distributed manner, changes the number of channels in use at a location in response to changes in numbers of active peer devices at a location.

  • Patent number: 8478304
Abstract: A mobile device operating in a cellular communication network determines its current location via the cellular communication network, for example, by triangulation of the base stations of the cellular communication network. At its current location, the mobile device also detects a wireless local area network (WLAN) such as a Wi-Fi network. The mobile device then sends the location information and an ID of the WLAN to a network based database server, which creates an entry to store data associating the location information with the WLAN. The mobile device can also store data associating the location with the WLAN in a local storage.
