  • Patent number: 6700488
Abstract: The combination of a portable device and a security system. The security system has a first holding portion and a second holding portion spaced from the first holding portion. The first and second holding portions are movable relative to each other to selectively change a spacing distance between the first and second holding portions. The first and second holding portions captively engage the portable device with the first and second holding portions in an engaged state and are movable relative to each other from the engaged state to a release state. A setting mechanism can be selectively placed in a secured state and an unsecured state. The setting mechanism in the secured state causes the first and second holding portions to be maintained relative to each other in the engaged state. The setting mechanism in the unsecured state allows the first and second holding elements to be moved relative to each other from the engaged state into the release state. An access assembly has first and second states.

  • Patent number: 6700492
Abstract: An electronic containment system using positional satellites is provided for controlling the movement of animals relative to a selected confinement area. A portable programming transceiver is used to program the boundary of a selected confinement area as the device is moved along such boundary. A programmable collar transceiver worn by the animal provides GPS signals from the satellite to a remotely located control station. The control station tracks the movement of the animal relative to the boundary. If the animal crosses the boundary, the station transmits a stimulus activation signal to the collar so that a corrective stimulus may be produced for the animal. Tracking and containment of objects are accomplished by providing GPS-defined, user-programmable containment areas.

  • Patent number: 6690279
Abstract: The invention is directed to a security element for the electronic surveillance of articles. This security element is detected by surveillance systems operating in different frequency ranges and it includes at least two materials of high permeability which, when excited by an external alternating magnetic field emit each a characteristic signal. The maximum signal components of the two materials lie in different frequency ranges and the signal components of the one material are negligibly ow in that particular frequency range in which the signal component of the other material is at a maximum level. The invention also relates to surveillance systems that incorporate these security elements.

  • Patent number: 6686842
Abstract: The dielectrophoretic force caused by the non-uniform electric field squared spatial gradient three-dimensional pattern uniquely exhibited by a predetermined type of entity can be detected by a locator device. A human operator holds the device in hand to thereby electrically and dielectrically connect the device to the human operator. The human operator's naturally occurring very low electrical decay time constant is increased through electronic circuitry externally connected to the device. The device is held in a balanced nearly horizontal state, and the operator scans the device in a constant speed uniform linear motion back and forth. An antenna extends from the front of the device, and both are acted on by the dielectrophoretic force.

  • Patent number: 6677852
Abstract: The system and method for automatically controlling or configuring, a device, such as an RFID Reader, reads a master control tag to upload sets of instructions from the tag to memory resident in the reader. Thereafter, the reader may read a control tag to select one or more sets of instructions stored in memory. The reader may thus be readily programmed without the need for physically connecting the reader to a computer, and without employing expensive key pads and display screens.

  • Patent number: 6667690
Abstract: HVAC network devices are provided with radio frequency identification tags (RFID tags) which can be read by a read/write device. The read tag identification of each network device is stored in memory within the HVAC network device. A device capable of reading the RFID tags of the HVAC network devices will be used by a person to assign network addresses to each network device. In particular, the person will use information concerning the location of an HVAC network device to determine the network address that is to be assigned to the network device. The thus identified network address along with the tag identification is transmitted to a network controller for the communication network. The network controller will transmit a configuration message over the communication bus that will include the tag identification as well as the desired network address.

  • Patent number: 6658215
Abstract: A compensation arrangement for addressing the problem of first-order and second-order polarization mode dispersion (PMD) in an optical fiber communication system includes separate, independent elements for each type of PMD. First-order PMD may be compensated using conventional techniques related to adjusting the transit time differential between the polarization states. The second-order polarization mode dispersion is compensated by recognizing the separate sources of second-order PMD (pulse broadening analogous to chromatic dispersion, additional pulse broadening due to optical filtering (narrowing), and coupling of a portion of the optical signal into the orthogonal polarization relative to the main pulse with a different transmit time. A chirped fiber grating with a variable temperature gradient, a complementary optical filter with variable spectral transmission and a polarizer, respectively, can be used to compensate for these three sources of second-order PMD.
