Patent number: 7016954Abstract: A system and method for processing an unsolicited error message is disclosed. Generally, a first computer is utilized comprising a transceiver, software stored within the first computer defining functions to be performed, and a processor configured by the software to perform the steps of: parsing an error message to determine an identification number that represents a most significant meaning of the error message; and, determining a description of the error message after parsing. The identification number is determined by dividing the error message into an identifier portion and a series of properties portion, wherein the identifier portion provides a general description of a cause of the error message, and the series of properties portion provides specific attributes of the error message. The identification number is then processed in accordance rules provided to the system for processing the error message.Type: GrantFiled: June 4, 2001Date of Patent: March 21, 2006Assignee: Lucent Technologies, Inc.Inventors: William F. Patent number: 6947963Abstract: A method of and apparatus for distributing data for a database between a plurality of processors in a distributed processor system involves running a database management system on a first plurality of processors in conjunction with a plurality of protocols that generate or amend data for the database. Data is distributed from servers to clients registered in a server-client relationship. Server-client relationships may also be registered between a second, and a third plurality of processors that do not run protocols generating or amending data for the database. Fault tolerant redundancy is provided by clients registering with two or more servers, one as a primary and another as a secondary, and activating the secondary if the primary fails. The method is particularly applicable to scalable data packet routers having a plurality of processors operating on different line and control cards.Type: GrantFiled: June 28, 2000Date of Patent: September 20, 2005Assignee: Pluris, IncInventors: Puneet Agarwal, Russell R. Patent number: 6728761Abstract: The present invention is directed to a method for tracking the use of an e-mail support tool. In one embodiment, the method initially involves eliciting from a user a query in connection with providing the e-mail support service. A corresponding e-mail query is then generated from the elicited query. The generated e-mail query includes a command having embedded query information that is associated with the user's query. The e-mail query is then made available to an agent for responding to the user's query by replying to the e-mail query. In replying to the e-mail query, the agent with a computer opens the e-mail query thereby executing the command. The execution of the command causes the agent computer to transmit to a server, designated within the command, a request that includes the embedded query information. The query information is then stored in a database in response to the fact that the request cannot be processed by the designated server.Type: GrantFiled: January 8, 2001Date of Patent: April 27, 2004Assignee: Hewlett-Packard Development Company, L.P.Inventor: Jerry B. Patent number: 6457057Abstract: A method and system for displaying a plurality of specified ones of pictures in an array of windows provided on a display screen of a computer based system. The size of moving and/or still pictures is reduced into size-reduced pictures with a size of the frames. The size-reduced pictures are coded into coded size-reduced pictures and stored in a hard disc. In response to a predetermined signal and a list of pictures to be displayed, a display frame is compiled from the coded size-reduced pictures specified by said list. The compiled frame is decoded and displayed.Type: GrantFiled: November 4, 1998Date of Patent: September 24, 2002Assignee: Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd.Inventors: Satoshi Kageyu, Shun Matsuura, Kayoko Asai, Hitoshi Kato, Hiroaki Yoshio, Tsuyoshi Kato

Patent number: 6434594Abstract: A system and method for distributing the execution of computer application programs among one or more computational resources over a computer network is described. This invention also manages the execution to optimize program execution, thereby permitting the multiplication of computational resources of a number of common computer resources linked by a computer network into the computational power commonly associated with supercomputers. This invention permits the automation of complex processes generally considered beyond the computational power of typical desktop computers by dividing and managing the process among a number of such computers connected by a computer network, which can then operate in parallel to maximize computational efficiency. This invention permits improved efficiency of communication between entities doing work on an application, whether a computer, device or person entity. This invention supports a wide variety of device types and computer operating system platforms.Type: GrantFiled: March 9, 1999Date of Patent: August 13, 2002Assignee: Talk2 Technology, Inc.Inventor: Darren Wesemann

Patent number: 6430595Abstract: A technique efficiently creates a database used to correlate information identifying data session traffic exchanged between entities of a computer network with information relating to multi-protocol intermediate devices configured to carry the session traffic throughout the network. The intermediate devices are preferably routers configured to carry System Network Architecture (SNA) session traffic between SNA entities comprising a host network connection and a physical unit (PU) station. The host network connection utilizes a channel-attached router for connectivity with a host computer. The technique allows a network management station (NMS) program to establish a NMS database by obtaining a PU name associated with an active SNA session without requiring a presence on or continual communication with a virtual telecommunication access method on the host.Type: GrantFiled: May 20, 1999Date of Patent: August 6, 2002Assignee: Cisco Technology, Inc.Inventors: Darin Ferguson, Robert Clouston, Anthony Talerico

Patent number: 6421721Abstract: A client arbitrator operates in a multi-processing operating system for monitoring and controlling a client machine's access to one or more devices. The arbitrator includes a) a request monitoring thread instantiated by any process request to begin or to cease accessing a device, for updating a list of monitored processes accordingly; and b) a waiting thread monitoring termination of a monitored process. If a process terminates the waiting thread determines any locked devices to which the terminated process has access, and, responsive to no other monitored process having access to any of the locked devices releases the client machine's access to the devices.Type: GrantFiled: March 16, 1999Date of Patent: July 16, 2002Assignee: International Business Machines Corporation,Inventors: Farzin Dadsetan, Tom Claus Goldermann Thuneby

Patent number: 6401126Abstract: A distributed file server system has multiple data servers connected to stream data files continuously over a network to multiple clients. Data files are distributed across the data servers so that data blocks of the data files are stored at manage distributed portions of a schedule. Each data server sees a different portion of the schedule, but no one data server sees the whole schedule. The scheduler facilitates service of requested data streams from its corresponding data server according to a schedule portion that is available to the data server. The scheduler determines whether to insert a new data stream into the current slot it presently owns in its schedule portion, or to wait for a subsequent slot in the schedule based on a thrifty policy.Type: GrantFiled: March 10, 1999Date of Patent: June 4, 2002Assignee: Microsoft CorporationInventors: John R.
