  • Patent number: 7260412
Abstract: A wireless communication system for supporting multimedia services (MMS) provided to a user of a wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) which communicates with the wireless communication system. The wireless communication system includes a third generation partnership program (3GPP) universal mobile telecommunications system (UMTS), a wireless local area network (WLAN) and an MMS server. The MMS server stores at least one MMS message for the WTRU in a memory until the WTRU retrieves the message. The 3GPP UMTS includes an internet protocol short message gateway (IP-SM-GW) having a short message service (SMS) proxy. The WTRU is registered with the SMS proxy to establish SMS connectivity, and is also registered with the MMS server to establish MMS connectivity. The WTRU is notified when the MMS server receives an MMS message for the WTRU. The WTRU then retrieves the MMS message from the memory of the MMS server.

  • Patent number: 7245910
Abstract: A method of providing location dependent information in a communications system, said method comprising the steps of: providing information identifying the location of a first station; sending said location information to a first element, said first element determining a second element based on said location information; and said second element providing geographic information relating to said location information.

  • Patent number: 7242941
Abstract: A mobile station typically determines whether to drop a communication link and/or a base transceiver station (BTS) based on a performance of an associated forward link. In order to avoid dropping a communication link that has a weak forward link but a strong reverse link, a communication system is provided that determines whether the reverse link is still good before determining to drop the communication link. In one embodiment, the communication system determines whether reverse link is still good based on a quality metric associated with the reverse link and quality metric(s) associated with one or more other reverse links that are in a soft-handoff mode with reverse link. In another embodiment, the communication system determines whether reverse link is still good by comparing a quality metric associated with the reverse link to a threshold.

  • Patent number: 7224966
Abstract: A telecommunications system according to an embodiment of the present invention includes a wireless device (30-150) including a positioning controller (504) and a communications controller (502); and an administrative device (30-152) for receiving alerts from said wireless communication device via said communications controller when said positioning controller determines that said wireless device is outside a predetermined geographic range, route, or daily routine.

  • Patent number: 7203496
Abstract: A telecommunication system includes: a first mobile switching center associated with a directory number, a local number portability data storage device in communication with the first mobile switching center, and a second mobile switching center in operative communication with the first mobile switching center and associated with wireless service to a mobile station. A subscriber associated with the mobile station has ported the directory number from the first mobile switching center to wireless service via another mobile switching center. In several embodiments, a method of relating the directory number to the mobile station for an incoming call is provided. The directory number is associated with a first mobile switching center and wireless service to the mobile station is associated with a second mobile switching center. Ultimately, in each embodiment of the method, the incoming call is forwarded from the first mobile switching center to another mobile switching center.

  • Patent number: 7181217
Abstract: A mobile services control platform supports enhanced services for SMS or MMS message forwarding. The service allows a subscriber to receive SMS (Short Message Service) directed to his or her mobile number across a range of devices, depending on the context, the device, and the network the user is connected from. In a representative example, when the user connects over a Wi-Fi network, e.g., using his or her laptop or other such device, he or she selects “Wi-Fi SMS” option from a client. As a result, future SMS sent to the user's mobile number get routed to his or her laptop over Wi-Fi—without the sender being aware that the user has connected over a different network. Similarly, SMS messages sent by the user from his or her laptop Wi-Fi client (e.g., through a softphone) are delivered to the recipient's mobile device as if they originated from the mobile phone. When Wi-Fi SMS is activated, preferably voice calls continue to be received over the mobile phone, with only SMS forwarded to Wi-Fi.

  • Patent number: 7162236
Abstract: Fast call set-up for a call to a multi-mode communication unit (102) is facilitated by a method and apparatus for registering and re-registering priorities with a SIP registrar (111). A list of contacts with first priorities associated with a mode of operation in a first enterprise network (106) is established and used. A switch to second priorities is made when a probability of a switch from the first mode of operation to a second mode of operation in a second cellular network (108) satisfies a threshold. The list of contacts includes a contact having an expiration time for the first mode of operation. A quality factor is determined and the list of contacts is re-registered and the expiration time changed if the quality factor does not satisfy a threshold.

  • Patent number: 6947735
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for avoiding interferences in cellular CDMA radio networks caused by defective mobile stations. To this end, the radio network is provided with a monitoring unit that compares an actual receive power arriving from a mobile station with a predetermined nominal receive power and initiates predetermined follow-up actions depending on the result of this comparison. Alternatively or additionally thereto, the monitoring unit is provided with at least one counter that is capable of detecting commands for power control of the mobile station that are transmitted individually for every mobile station from the base station to the mobile station and to initiate predetermined follow-up actions depending thereon.
