    Abstract: A messaging system (11) for conveying messages between a host server (15) and a client (13a) that is part of a GSM network and a method therefor. The GSM network includes an SMS facility to convey messages between its clients using an SMSC (25), each wireless client having a network identifying number (NIN) associated with it to uniquely identify the client within the GSM network. Each message comprises a message packet (43) including the address (49) of an intended recipient, the address (47) of the sender of the message and the message itself (51). The host server (15) may be selectively connected to a plurality of different client types (13) via the Internet (19) to convey messages therebetween. Each client has a client identifying number (CIN) associated with it to uniquely identify it to the host server (15). The host server (15) and the SMSC (25) are interconnected by the Internet (19) or another computer network to provide for communications therebetween.

    Abstract: A call is routed to a wireless mobile station from a wireline network while bypassing a host mobile switching center (MSC) of the mobile station when the mobile station is registered at an MSC other than the host MSC. In particular, a service control point (SCP) in the wireline network receives a query from a tandem switch, associated with a trunk group of the host MSC, in response to an attempted termination of the call at the trunk group. Based on information from the query, the SCP retrieves registration data from a home location register of the host MSC, using IS-41 signaling. When the registration data indicates that the mobile station is registered at the alternate MSC, the SCP instructs the tandem switch to route the call directly to a trunk group of the alternate MSC, i.e., without passing through the host MSC.

    Abstract: A method for a WLAN access point to allocate telephone numbers for use by mobile stations. The access point includes stored data indicating one or more allowed telephone numbers. When a mobile station associated with the access point and acquires an IP address, the mobiles station sends a telephone number allocation-request to the access point, seeking allocation of a particular telephone number for use by the mobile station. If the telephone requested number is one of those allowed, then the access point associates the telephone number with the mobile station. On the other hand, if the requested telephone number is not one of those allowed, then the access point provides the mobile station with a list of the available telephone numbers, to allow a user to select a desired telephone number, and the mobile station may then send a new telephone number allocation-request, seeking allocation of the selected telephone number.

A number of infrastructure components are included in a wireless mesh network environment. Each infrastructure component includes an omni-directional antenna and one or more directional antennas (e.g., electronically steered phased array antennas) that can be used to communicate with other infrastructure component and wireless devices. Directional antennas can utilize one or more directional beams that can be directed towards an infrastructure component or wireless device to communicate with the infrastructure component or wireless device. Infrastructure components can adapt to communicate with the same destination through different intermediary infrastructure components. Since the signal strength of a directional beam can be greater than that of an omni-directional antenna of the same gain, infrastructure components can be separated by greater distances.
