  • Patent number: 8626241
Abstract: A base station for wireless network uses one or more MIMO channels having subchannels, to communicate with multiple user equipments, and allocates the sub channels to the user equipments. Different subchannels of a given one of the channels can be allocated to different user equipments. The ability to allocate sub channels individually rather than only allocating entire channels can enable higher data rates can be achieved. This is particularly useful for improving data rates at cell boundaries or sector boundaries, where the coverage is traditionally weakest. A user equipment can use subchannels from different MIMO channels from different sectors or from different base stations.

  • Patent number: 8606260
Abstract: A location determination subsystem of a mobile device can determine a location of the mobile device. A monitoring subsystem of the mobile device can be configured, using a profile, to monitor states of a wireless connection between the mobile device and a communications network. When the monitoring subsystem detects an interruption of the wireless connection, a virtual geofence can be constructed around the location of the mobile device when the interruption occurred. The geofence can indicate a boundary of an enclosed geographic area. The geofence can be associated with a diagnostics profile stored on the mobile device or dynamically retrieved from a server upon occurrence of the interruption. When the mobile device enters the area enclosed by the geofence, the monitoring subsystem can be configured using the diagnostics profile in anticipation of interruptions of connections. Information relating to the interruptions can be anonymously sent to a server for analysis.

  • Patent number: 8588749
Abstract: A mobile communication device provides a user with the ability to set up one or more profiles on the device. Each profile is configured to segment the user's data and applications and selectively restrict access from an active profile to user data and applications associated with other profiles on the device. The mobile communication device stores profile configuration data including profile selection criteria used to automatically associate items of user data with profiles on the device. When an item of user data is received on the device, the device automatically identifies a profile to associate with the received item based on the profile selection criteria, and the received item is stored in the device so as to be associated with the identified profile. Exemplary profile selection criteria include criteria based on a current time or location, a currently active profile, a data type of the received item, and a source of the received item.

  • Patent number: 8582592
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for assigning and using resources corresponding to discontinuous portions of bandwidth are described. A single assignment may be used to assign multiple disjoint portions of bandwidth to be used by a wireless terminal, e.g., at the same time, as an uplink or downlink band. Different portions of bandwidth allocated to a terminal may have different numbers and/or locations of guard subcarriers with relevant guard subcarrier information being communicated to the wireless terminal in a broadcast signal or being determined from stored information. The disjoint portions of bandwidth allocated for use to a terminal may be separated by a carrier band, e.g., 1.25 MHz or more, which is not available for use, e.g., because it is owned by another service provider. Some embodiments are implemented using OFDM signals wherein a wireless terminal may generate or receive an OFDM symbol including subcarriers, e.g.

  • Patent number: 8571567
Abstract: There is disclosed a communication terminal device capable of eliminating collision of access request signals simultaneously transmitted from communication terminal devices in a local cell, preventing generation of interference signal in another cell adjacent to the local cell, and improving the throughput in the local cell. There is also disclosed a base station device for controlling the transmission power of the access permission signal so as to prevent generation of an interference signal in another cell adjacent to the local cell. In this device, a use sub-channel selection unit (206) has a correspondence table between the reception quality of the pilot signals divided into classes and the sub-channel allocated to the classes. According to the correspondence table, the use sub-channel selection unit (206) selects a sub-channel group of RACH correlated to the measurement result of the reception quality of the pilot signals reported from the reception quality measurement unit (205).

  • Patent number: 8565738
Abstract: The present invention includes a method and software application for providing a promotion to a user on a phone. The software application resides on a user's phone and “listens” for phone numbers dialed by a user. In response to the user dialing a phone number, the software determines whether a promotion or an offer for a promotion should be provided to the user. In response to determining to play or offer to play a promotion to the user, the software application on the phone effectively “intercepts” the call and plays to the user either a promotion or an offer to hear about a promotion prior to placing an outbound voice call. The software application may retrieve the promotion from local memory or may connect with a remote server to download an applicable promotion.

  • Patent number: 8565217
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for communicating packets from a remote access node assembly by way of a serving access node assembly are described. An inter-route tunneling protocol module which interfaces with a radio link protocol module is used to recover a tunneled route protocol packet. Information to be communicated to the access terminal from the remote access node assembly by way of the serving access node assembly is subject to two levels of radio link protocol (RLP) processing operations. The first level of RLP processing being performed by the remote access node assembly. The second level of RLP processing being performed by the serving access node assembly. The access terminal, in recovering information performs the inverse of the two levels of RLP processing.
