  • Patent number: 6593981
Abstract: A multigap color LCD device which prevents display non-uniformity arising from non-uniformity in cell thickness. The external measurements of a blue color filter within a LCD device are fabricated not to overlap the source buses and the gate buses, which surround an opposing picture element electrode, and the external measurements of a green color filter in the LCD device are fabricated to overlap a pair of source buses and a pair of gate buses, which surround the opposing picture element electrode. The distance between the green color filter and both the source buses and the gate buses, is set so that it approximately equals the distance between the blue color filter and the picture element electrode. In addition to liquid crystal, spacers are inserted between the two substrates to maintain uniformity in cell thickness. Red color filters may be the same width as the blue color filters, or wider, extending to the proximity of the blue color filters.

  • Patent number: 6593991
Abstract: A liquid crystal display apparatus is provided which is capable of realizing a uniform display even at a high definition and offering a widened operating temperature. A signal line is formed on a signal line through an intervening insulating layer in an active-matrix type liquid crystal display apparatus of MIM drive type. MIM devices as two-terminal nonlinear devices are formed between each pixel electrode and the signal lines. The MIM devices are formed to operate in different operating temperature ranges. By selecting one of the signal lines to be supplied with a driving signal to achieve switching between the MIM devices, the pixel electrode associated therewith can operate within a wider operating temperature range. The respective resistances of the signal lines and/or MIM devices associated with each pixel electrode are adjusted so as to be equalized throughout all the pixel electrodes, thereby lessening a non-uniform display to ensure a uniform display.

Abstract: An active matrix type liquid display includes a main display and a sub-display having pixel areas. The pixel areas in the sub-display are different in size from the pixel areas in the main display. The active matrix type liquid display is configured so that the ratio of minimum space to maximum space is equal to or greater than one. The minimum space is the distance that separates the nearest ends of one pixel electrode and one gate electrode. The maximum space is the distance between opposite surfaces of paired electrodes.

  • Patent number: 6587163
Abstract: A liquid crystal display device, or more particularly, an active matrix type liquid crystal display device having a pixel electrode formed in a pixel field defined on one of two transparent substrates opposed to each other with a liquid crystal layer between them. The pixel electrode is overlapped a signal line, which is formed in a portion of the one transparent substrate coincident with a black matrix, with a dielectric between them. The width of the overlap is set to a value satisfying a condition that an electric field induced between the signal line and pixel electrode will not invade into the pixel field defined with the black matrix. Owing to the structure, inhomogeneous luminance caused by a source electrode of a thin film transistor can be avoided. Moreover, inhomogeneous luminance caused by a capacitive element can be avoided.
