    Abstract: A fire-screening panel is provided that maintains its effectiveness in preventing fire propagation even after aging of the panel. The panel comprises a first structural ply formed from a vitreous sheet, and a second structural ply, with a layer of intumescent material disposed therebetween. Other plies may also be provided, and the plies are clamped together in face-to-face relationship, and/or bonded together. At least one ply of the panel has an infra-red reflecting coating disposed thereon, remote from the intumescent material, which coating provides for the retained effectiveness of the fire-propagating properties of the panel despite aging thereof.

    Abstract: A carbon fiber reinforced composite tubular drive shaft is provided wherein the fibrous reinforcement is positioned in a structural configuration capable of yielding improved service characteristics. The wall of the drive shaft comprises at least four bonded circumferentially disposed layers composed of appropriate fibrous reinforcement situated within a resin matrix (as described). The carbon fibers are disposed generally longitudinally in a layer at an intermediate position within the tube wall and are capable of efficiently increasing the stiffness of the shaft. The overall requirement for the carbon fiber component of the fibrous reinforcement is minimized. Glass fibers likewise are disposed generally longitudinally in a layer at an intermediate position within the tube wall and are capable of economically contributing resistance to torsion buckling to the overall drive shaft without deleteriously influencing the critical speed of the drive shaft.

    Abstract: Reinforced panel structures include a panel core formed from a cementitious composition that has controlled bleed characteristics. For example, the cementitious composition may comprise hydraulic cement, a dispersing agent, a gelling agent, and water. At least one woven, fabric reinforcing layer in the form of a sheet is laminated in the panel core closely adjacent at least one of its faces. The controlled bleed characteristic of the core composition insures that the reinforcing layer is bonded tightly thereto. The fabric from which the layer is made has a tensile strain that is compatible with the compression strain of the panel core to permit the panel to be cold formed.

    Abstract: A system for providing thermal insulation for portions of a spacecraft which do not exceed 900.degree. F. (756.degree. K.) during ascent or reentry relative to the earth's atmosphere. The thermal insulation is formed of relatively large flexible sheets of needled Nomex felt having a flexible waterproof coating. The thickness of the felt is sized to protect against projected temperatures and is attached to the structure by a resin adhesive. Vent holes in the sheets allow ventilation while maintaining waterproofing. The system is heat treated to provide thermal stability.
