  • Patent number: 5446845
Abstract: Data bus steering logic routes data between various byte lanes of the system bus. Additionally, control signals are provided which allow the connected device and the steering logic to communicate and respond to requests made by the CPU. The steering logic provides a path between the attached device and the byte lanes of the system bus, to which the device is not directly connected. During load and store operations data is transferred via the steering logic and directly between the device and CPU on to the portion of the system bus that it is directly connected to. The steering logic includes a multiplexer, latch, buffer, driver and the like for each lane of data on the system bus. For example, if the system bus is 64 bits wide and a 32 bit device is connected to one-half of the bus, the steering logic will provide a path from the 32 bit device to the other 32 bits of the system bus not directly connected to the device.

  • Patent number: 5428794
Abstract: An interrupting node for providing interrupt requests to a pended bus. The interrupting node provides to the pended bus an interrupt request message including ID data for identifying the interrupting node as the source of an interrupt request. An interrupt servicing node provides interrupt acknowledge messages including destination data specifying a particular interrupting node at times when the interrupt servicing node is ready to service an interrupt request message. The interrupting node detects whether an interrupt acknowledge message on the bus includes destination data specifying that interrupting node, and provides an interrupt vector message to the bus in response.

  • Patent number: 5420992
Abstract: A technique for extending the data word size and the virtual address space of a pre-existing architecture so that hardware for the extended architecture also supports the pre-existing architecture. Extension of the data word size from m bits to N bits entails widening the machine registers and data paths from m bits to N bits and sign-extending entities of m or fewer bits to N bits when they are loaded into registers. Some of the m-bit instructions, when operating on N-bit sign-extended versions of m-bit entities, produce an N-bit result that may not correspond to the correct m-bit result, sign-extended to N bits. For these instructions compatibility requires that the instructions be further defined to guarantee a sign-extended result. This means that separate N-bit instructions corresponding to these m-bit instructions are needed. The support for up to an N-bit virtual address space is provided in part by widening the virtual address data paths.
