  • Patent number: 6457278
Abstract: Ingress and egress to closets and doorways through standard swinging doors requires that the area the door traverses be kept clear and is, therefore, space not usable for other purposes. The pivotal storage unit replaces doors with useful additional storage which occupies the full width and height of the door opening while permitting normal access through the doorway. The unit is mounted on hinges offset from the doorframe to permit full opening of the storage unit beyond 90°. The lower hinge incorporates a thrust bearing to support storage loads. A rolling support wheel on the base of the unit additionally supports the unit when heavily loaded. The unit can be formed in a variety of furniture configurations such as an armoire, computer work center, home entertainment center, pantry, desk, curio, vanity, etc. Two units can be used for double width doorways.

  • Patent number: 6438920
Abstract: A hybrid truss and a system of fabricating a building using a hybrid truss is provided. The hybrid truss is designed to span large widths without center support. Each hybrid truss is typically made with two symmetrical truss members that join at the peak. Each member is made with an upper cord and a lower cord having cross bracing between the two cords. A peak end member is attached to the ends of the cords to join the two truss members at the peak to form the hybrid truss. Attached at the lower end of each truss member is a sleeve. The sleeve is rigidly attached to at least the lower cords and cross bracing. The sleeve redirects outward forces into the top of a post in a downward force and a slight rotational force. The sleeve is designed to slide over the top of a post or column to attach and properly position the truss on the top of the posts or columns. Vertical adjustment to level the hybrid truss is provided by vertical movement of the sleeve on the post.

  • Patent number: 6434909
Abstract: A tool and a method for cutting and installing roofing shingles. The tool includes a base with a work surface and a cutter for cutting shingles placed on the work surface. The work surface include at least one limiting pedestals which includes an edge at a distance from the work surface, so that several shingles stacked over one another and placed over the work surface and slid against the edge of the limiting pedestal to expose different proportions of the shingles to the cutter to produce shingle sections of different sizes. The different sized shingle sections are then used to start the rows of shingles placed on the roof to be covered with shingles.

  • Patent number: 6412241
Abstract: A method of building a log structure using naturally-shaped logs is provided. The method involves stacking layers of the log structure upon one another in a rough approximation of the final desired positioning, determining the distance of the greatest gap existing between the pairs of logs at each layer, determining groove cuts to be made for every log in the same layer using the same vertical groove dimension, determining a dimension of a final notch cut to be made in the logs of the lowest layer stacked according to this invention, and determining the final notch cuts to be made at layers above according to a relationship among the vertical groove dimensions that were marked for each of the grooves in a single layer and the dimension of the final notch cut determined for the lowest layer of logs stacked according to the present invention.
