    Abstract: The pyrolytic carbon lamellar interphase is formed on the reinforcing fibers inside a chamber in which a plurality of successive cycles is performed, each cycle comprising: injecting a reaction gas in which the pyrolytic carbon precursor is selected from alkanes, excluding methane taken as a sole component, alkenes, alkynes, and aromatic hydrocarbons, and mixtures thereof; the gas is maintained inside the chamber for a first predetermined time period to form an interphase layer of controlled thickness of nanometer size; the gaseous reaction products are then evacuated during a second time period; the cycles being performed consecutively in the chamber until the thickness desired for the interphase has been obtained, thereby achieving a lamellar interphase that is highly anisotropic, whose lattice fringe texture has distorted fringes of total length (L.sub.2) not less than 4 nanometers on average with maximum values exceeding 10 nanometers.

The coating composition for metal container interiors and exteriors comprises: (a) a low molecular weight polyfunctional epoxy resin; (b) a phenolic resin; (c) a solution grade vinyl chloride copolymer, a high molecular weight epoxy resin or a mixture thereof; (d) about 60% to about 90% by weight of nonvolatile material of a vinyl chloride dispersion resin; and a nonaqueous carrier. The coating composition is stored as a single unit system from manufacture until use without an unacceptable increase in viscosity.

    Abstract: A dyed union knit fabric comprised of at least a polyurethane elastic fiber containing a chlorine-induced degradation inhibitor in a proportion of 0.5-4.5 weight % relative to the weight of the fiber, and a polyamide fiber and/or a cation dyeable polyester fiber, which has been dyed with mixed dyes of acid dyes, dispersion dyes, metal-complex dyes, reactive dyes and direct dyes, and markedly improved in resistance to chlorine-induced change in shade by allowing to contain at least one compound having a reaction amount of chlorine of 50 milliequivalent per gram or more, specifically one member of mono- and/or polyhydroxybenzene derivatives in a proportion of 0.1-20% relative to the weight of the fiber; and a method for manufacturing same. According to the present invention, excellent resistance to chlorine-induced change in shade as well as chlorine-induced degradation can be afforded to the dyed union knit fabric.

    Abstract: An apparatus and method for applying labels onto small cylindrical articles such as dry cell batteries is disclosed. A label transport drum has a substantially smooth surface. Cut labels are applied to the surface and an adhesive applicator applies a preferred cold adhesive onto an area adjacent the leading edge of the label. A solvent applicator applies a predetermined amount of solvent on the area adjacent the trailing edge of the label. The solvent applicator includes a solvent transfer roll and a rotatably support rotary pad print head. The rotary pad print head includes at least one narrowly tapering, flexible wiper tip. In one embodiment the wiper tip has a V-notch on its end. The flexible tip engages the solvent transfer roll, transferring solvent from the solvent transfer roll into the V-notch. The rotary pad print head is timed to rotate so that the flexible tip is deflected against the area adjacent the trailing edge of the label.

The chopped strands of carbon fibers can be used in spinning. The chopped strands of carbon fibers show no fusion of filaments together, are excellent in separationability and easily disperse in a matrix while maintaining excellent bundling properties.

    Abstract: An optical recording medium for storing data is provided having a visible logo on a read side of the medium for providing some anticounterfeiting protection. A logo coating for producing the visible logo is carded by the read-side of the substrate; the coating has a sufficiently high transmittance at a read or write wavelength such that light at the read or write wavelength passing through the logo coating toward the other side of the substrate and reflected back through the logo is substantially transmitted and unchanged by the coating so that the data can be detected as well the coating is sufficiently light absorbing in the visible spectrum such that there is a visible contrast between the recording coating and the logo coating. In another embodiment, the logo coating forms a portion of a reflective recording layer on the other non-read side of the substrate. In this case, the logo coating is visually distinguishable from the rest of the recording layer and is made of a different material.

    Abstract: A partly-overlapped portion of a sheath film is meltbonded by heat to provide a seal which a user can tear open with ease. A heat sealing area of the sheath film is halftone printed to reduce the bonding area, thereby decreasing the bonding strength. A tearing portion is provided along the heat seal which is printed so that it has a bonding strength which gradually increases along the tear part until it reaches the bonding strength of the remainder of the heat seal. A curl section having minimal bonding strength relative to the tearing portion of the heat seal is induced to curl up using heat treatment to allow the user to grasp the sheath film at the tear part.

    Abstract: A photocopy-resistant document which has a background pattern or logo which is printed with solvent-sensitive, dye based ink and a method of making such a document. The presence of this photocopy-resistant background pattern or logo makes it impossible for a would-be forger of a face-value note such as a bank check to duplicate the original document as a color photocopy. It also makes it impossible for a printing plate to be made based on a photocopy of the document. Besides being photocopy-resistant, the indicia printed with the solvent-sensitive ink are washed away when acetone or bleach solvent is applied to the surface of the document. A fluorescence material can also be added to the solvent-sensitive ink to make the indicia printed with the ink fluorescent under black light.

    Abstract: A single-sided ablative write-once optical disk is usable without a protective cartridge. The disk includes the conventional radiation-transparent polycarbonate substrate that has one surface serving as the disk outer face and an opposite surface that supports the fluorinated hydrocarbon subbing layer and the tellurium-based active data layer. The tellurium alloy in the data layer flows to form holes when subjected to incident laser radiation through the substrate. A multilayer protective coating is formed over the tellurium-based layer and has an outer surface that serves as the other outer face for the disk. The multilayer protective coating includes a deformable layer formed directly on the tellurium-based layer and a scratch-resistant hardcoat formed on the deformable layer. The deformable layer has sufficient hardness and modulus of elasticity to permit the tellurium alloy to flow at conventional laser power levels. In one embodiment the deformable layer is a silicone elastomer.

    Abstract: An electrostatic notice board system in which characters can be written on the surface while attraction force sufficient to hold objects thereon being maintained. In the system, a hard coating material layer is formed at the surface off the attraction layer consisting of a layered dielectric substance and the back face of the attraction layer is provided with a pair of positive and negative electrodes in the form of comb-teeth, so that the objects such as paper sheets are attracted and held by coulomb force on the surface of the hard coating material layer. The hard coating material layer is, for example, formed by applying acrylic urethane coating material to the surface of the attraction layer and hardening the material with ultraviolet ray irradiation. The hard coating material layer has a volume resistivity of 10.sup.10 .OMEGA. cm or more and thickness of 50 .mu. or less.
