The display apparatus divides a display period of one frame into a plurality of sub-frames, controls the input value for the optical modulation element independently per each sub-frame in the plurality of sub-frames, and displays an image with a gradation display using the optical modulation element.

    Abstract: A force feedback interface device is coupled to a host computer that displays a graphical environment, the device including a user manipulatable object physically contacted and moveable by a user. A sensor detects a position of the user object and provides a sensor signal to the host computer, where the sensor signal includes information representative of the position of the user object. An actuator is coupled to the device or user object and outputs a force on the user manipulatable object or a housing of the device. The actuator includes a magnet and a grounded coil, where the magnet moves approximately within a plane with respect to the coil, and wherein a current is provided in the coil to generate the force. Other embodiments provide a magnet that moves in a linear degree of freedom within a coil housing, or provide an at least partially spherical magnet providing rotary degrees of freedom to a user manipulatable object coupled to the magnet. One embodiment includes a planar frame support mechanism.

The second light emitting diodes in the remaining display areas are automatically illuminated in a complementary color.

    Abstract: A display mechanism is described having the capability of showing two or more colors using one or more flexible membranes that electrostatically switch positions between stationary electrodes of different geometry and color. Each flexible colored membrane is multi-layered and comprised of at least one conductive layer and one dielectric layer. Each membrane or stack of membranes with the adjacent electrodes serves as a single chromatophore, the color of which is altered electrically. A first colored electrode is substantially flat and parallel to a base substrate containing control circuitry. Each of a plurality of second electrodes is of a substantially rounded geometry, around which membranes wrap as determined by electronic signal. Display color is produced as electric forces separate surfaces of common color. The display is non-luminous, consumes very little power and is easily visible under normal to very bright ambient illumination. Integrated electronics provide power, signal and connectivity.

    Abstract: Control of display power management by a host computer connected by a standard cable to a display monitor can be avoided by simply detecting user inactivity within a monitor or signaling such to the monitor with any one of the DPMS signals to the monitor, such as the video signal, i.e., the video intelligence signal occurring between horizontal synchronization pulses. In the absence of the video signal, the monitor commences timing of several display power management states without further reference to the DPMS signaling signals, except to monitor whether the video signal returns to normal. In the absence of a return to normal on the video signal, the display monitor transitions from a normal state to a standby state, thence to a suspend state, and finally to an off state. If user activity is again detected, a transition from any of these display power management states to normal is made.

    Abstract: A junction-based field emission display, wherein the junctions are formed by depositing a semiconducting or dielectric, low work function, negative electron affinity (NEA) silicon-based compound film (SBCF) onto a metal or n-type semiconductor substrate. The SBCF can be doped to become a p-type semiconductor. A small forward bias voltage is applied across the junction so that electron transport is from the substrate into the SBCF region. Upon entering into this NEA region, many electrons are released into the vacuum level above the SBCF surface and accelerated toward a positively biased phosphor screen anode, hence lighting up the phosphor screen for display. To turn off, simply switch off the applied potential across the SBCF/substrate. May be used for field emission flat panel displays.

When image data are to be inputted or outputted from a refresh memory corresponding to a display frame, the memory content and the display address are assigned at a ratio of 1:n to effect the processings in parallel. As a result, the time period utilized by the display cycle of the prior art can be assigned to the drawing operation so that the processing can be speeded up while making it easier than the prior art to effect the superposed display of letters, symbols and drawings.
