  • Patent number: 4116421
Abstract: A method of closing phosphorus furnace tapholes which comprises applying pneumatic pressure at the taphole opening to force molten material in the boretube back into the furnace and then introducing sand particles through the taphole to meet and effect solidification of incoming molten furnace material thereby sealing off the inner opening of the boretube and filling the remainder of the boretube with sand. Tapping is readily accomplished by blowing out the loose sand and breaking the inner seal of solidified furnace material.

  • Patent number: 4116422
Abstract: A wire annealing apparatus of the type in which an annealing current resistively heats the wire to soften it. The annealing current is caused to flow as a result of a potential difference applied to a section of wire through low friction-free running contact pulleys. Each of the contact pulleys is as friction-free as possible because it is rotatably supported by a ball bearing on a shaft which is rotatably driven at or near the rotational speed at which the pulley is rotated by the wire. The annealing current path between the shaft and the contact pulley is completed through a low friction electrical connector assembly. Annealing current is provided from flowing through the supporting ball bearing.

  • Patent number: 4114863
Abstract: A new and improved thermal torch or lance and method for boring, cutting, burning and the like of hard base materials which facilitates concentrating and intensifying the thermic reaction thereof. The arrangement includes an elongated hollow inner sleeve or casing generally coextensively received within an elongated hollow outer sleeve or casing with the two casings being dimensioned so that a first gas flow passage is defined therebetween over the cooperative lengths thereof. At least one elongated rod is received within the inner casing in a manner defining at least one second gas flow passage over the cooperative lengths thereof. In operation oxygen is passed under pressure through the first and second passages from the torch inlet end to and outwardly from the torch discharge end. Oxygen passing outwardly from the second passage cooperates in the thermic reaction as is conventional in prior thermal torches.

  • Patent number: 4113240
Abstract: An open-ended continuous sintering furnace and system including means for providing a countercurrent protective gas atmosphere through a portion of the furnace and system and a substantially contaminant-free exit atmosphere throughout the remainder of the system and a continuous conveyor means of substantially solid refractory metal with notched retaining walls. The countercurrent protective gas atmosphere is provided so as to purge volatilized impurities released from workpieces past non-sintered or partially sintered workpieces. Such a flow thereby helps to prevent contamination of more fully sintered workpieces as they are cooled and exit the system. The partial countercurrent protective gas atmosphere is accomplished by multiple gas ejection means for ejecting the protective gas or by multiple sintering chambers with gas ejection between the chambers.

  • Patent number: 4109897
Abstract: A salt reclamation system especially for use with molten salt baths used for treating articles by immersion of the articles in the bath and then withdrawal thereof, with resultant drag-out of salt. The salt removed from the bath on the surface of the articles is washed from the articles and the salt-laden wash water is returned to the surface of the molten salt bath, with consequent volatilization of the water, which is withdrawn or dissipated as steam, thereby returning the drag-out salt to the bath.
