  • Patent number: 4046129
Abstract: The operation of an internal combustion engine is regulated by an electronic regulation circuit which utilizes suction pipe pressure to modulate the width of a pulsed signal and to vary the amplitude of a sawtooth wave signal in accordance with the duration of said pulsed signal so that the fuel injection to the engine may be controlled as desired under all operating conditions. The regulation circuitry includes apparatus for modifying the slope of the time versus pressure characteristic of the suction pipe transducer to account for the differences between full load and no load torque of the engine. This is accomplished byvarying the amplitude of the sawtooth waveforms by shunting a portion of the charging current to the sawtooth generator in accordance with the load conditions on the engine.

  • Patent number: 4046124
Abstract: There is disclosed an ignition system for a multicylinder internal combustion engine which employs a conventional Kettering ignition coil and a pulse generator such as an induced voltage coil operating in cooperation with a magnetic circuit driven in timed relationship to the engine for generating a train of voltage pulses in synchronism wih the engine. The circuit of the invention includes a circuit across a source of electrical energy and the primary windings of the ignition coil with an electronic switch therein and with a high frequency pass filter in circuit between the induction coil and the electronic switch of the primary windings circuit to pass only the high frequency voltage pulses that are responsive to the inflection point of the cyclic voltage induced in the induction coil. The high pass filter is preferably a tuned RC circuit operative to effect pulse shaping of the train of induced voltage pulses to a train of sharp peak voltage pulses of minimal time and duration.

  • Patent number: 4043302
Abstract: An electronic, solid-state ignition system for an internal combustion engine is disclosed which is responsive to alternating timing signals produced in timed relationship with the engine. The electronic system comprises a plurality of integrator circuits, as transistorized output stage and a feedback loop for linearly regulating the current limit duty cycle to a fixed percentage of the firing cycle time period independent of current ramp time through the coil. A further circuit also responsive to the timing signals is included, which circuit overrides the aforementioned electronic system below a predetermined engine rpm. The overriding circuit effects a desired lead angle to the timing signals applied thereto to produce a minimum dwell angle for engine speeds below the predetermined engine rpm.

  • Patent number: 4040394
Abstract: Certain intervals are determined in which output signals from an exhaust gas sensing device are sensed, and then applied to a control circuit, to control the fuel supply system (carburetor, or fuel injection system) in such a direction that a predetermined ratio of fuel and air is being supplied to the engine to provide exhaust gases of predetermined composition. The intervals are determined by a logic circuit which has applied thereto engine operating parameters such as operating time of the engine after having been started, engine speed, engine power condition (idling, or supplying power), engine temperature, or the like.

  • Patent number: 4040397
Abstract: The operation of each electromagnetic fuel injector of an internal combustion engine is controlled so that when an energizing current is caused to flow from the battery of the engine through the coil of the fuel injector, the time taken for the current to reach its full value is controlled electronically so that it is a constant irrespective of the battery voltage but no shorter than would naturally result if the battery were to deliver its predicted lowest voltage directly to the coil, the necessary control being obtained by generating a constant electric current and using it to charge a capacitor to a predetermined voltage, comparing the voltage of the capacitor with a voltage which is proportional to the energizing current flowing through the coil, and controlling the build up time of the energizing current so that it is equal to the time taken to charge the capacitor, this being constant.

  • Patent number: 4038951
Abstract: Device for limiting the speed of internal-combustion engines, particularly uitable for small and medium-size, two-stroke engines which operate at rather high revolutions, such as between 2000 and 10000 rpm. Two exemplary embodiments are disclosed. In both, an ignition coil receives a discharge voltage from a capacitor energized by a charging coil, a rectifier being coupled to the output of the charging coil, and a separate tripping coil used in the circuit arrangement, which latter is displaced in phase with respect to the charging coil. A semiconductor switch, preferably a thyristor with steep electrical characteristics, is connected to the capacitor and has its switching gate connected to the tripping coil, the conductive phase of the switch being so controlled by the tripping coil that the charging process of the capacitor is at least partly inhibited when a predetermined maximum engine speed is attained or exceeded.

  • Patent number: 4038956
Abstract: This disclosure deals with a variable fluid pressure regulator wherein the level at which the fluid pressure is regulated is adjustable. A member has a flow passage formed therein, and the fluid flows through the passage and out of the member, and a closure is positioned over the opening. The closure is yieldably mounted relative to the member and a spring urges the closure toward the opening. A recess or cavity is formed in the closure, and the fluid flows from the opening, into the recess, and then through a space between the closure and the member. The fluid pressure in the passage is a function of the spring force and the effective area of fluid pressure on the closure, and the effective area comprises the area of the opening plus any area of the recess which lies outside the margin of the opening. The regulated fluid pressure level may be varied by laterally shifting the closure relative to the opening in order to change the effective area.

  • Patent number: 4036193
Abstract: A plunger is reciprocable in a barrel to force fuel to the injection nozzles. The portion of the barrel defining with the plunger the compression chamber is movable and is formed with a port leading to the unpressurized fuel reservoir in such a manner that the plunger uncovers the port at the end of its fuel injection stroke to overflow fuel from the compression chamber to the reservoir and terminate fuel injection. The position of the movable portion of the barrel and thereby the port relative to the plunger determines the fuel injection volume. A closed loop electronic servo system is provided to position the movable part of the barrel in accordance with the required fuel injection volume.
