    Abstract: A rocket engine component is formed as a tungsten-copper composite substrate, and a functionally-gradient material coating overlying and contacting the substrate. The functionally-gradient material coating has a composition that varies nonlinearly through a thickness of the coating so as to minimize thermal stresses through the coating, and such that the functionally-gradient material coating is tungsten adjacent to the substrate and is rhenium remote from the substrate. In a preferred form, the functionally-gradient material coating includes a tungsten sublayer overlying and contacting the substrate, a tungsten-rhenium sublayer overlying and contacting the tungsten sublayer; and a rhenium sublayer overlying and contacting the tungsten-rhenium sublayer. The functionally-gradient material coating is preferably applied by a low-temperature deposition technique such as plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition.

    Abstract: The heat shrinkable film includes at least one of an ethylene-propylene random copolymer and an ethylene-propylene-butene random copolymer and a propylene-butene copolymer of low crystallinity, which is biaxially stretched simultaneously by a ratio of 2.0-3.5 times for each of the machine direction and the transverse direction by a wet heating method. The film preferably has a tensile elongation at breaking of more than 200%, and a heat shrinking ratio of more than 8% for each of the machine direction and the transverse direction when it is immersed in glycerine at 80.degree. C. for 30 sec. Since the file is excellent in tensile elongation and has satisfactory heat shrinkability at low temperature, it is suitable as a film for use in an automatic L-bar sealer in which a tensile elongation at breaking is an important factor.

    Abstract: A magnetic layer is provided on a nonmagnetic base with a non-ferromagnetic layer interposed between them. Non-ferromagnetic particulate iron oxide is incorporated in the non-ferromagnetic layer. In addition to, or in place of, this iron oxide, non-structural carbon having a mean particle diameter of 10 to 60 nm, a specific surface area of 150 m2/g as measured by the BET method and a DBP oil absorption of 100 ml/100 g or less may be used. This makes it possible to achieve a magnetic recording medium having excellent surface properties and good-enough electromagnetic transducing characteristics.

    Abstract: A thermoplastic polyurethane composition comprises a thermoplastic polyurethane and a tin compound. The tin compound is contained in an amount of 0.3 to 15 ppm as converted into tin atom based on the thermoplastic polyurethane. The thermoplastic polyurethane composition has a retention ratio of long-chain hard segments when melt treated at 220.degree. C. for 60 minutes of at least 85%. The thermoplastic polyurethane composition also has a retention ratio of inherent viscosity when melt treated at 220.degree. C. for 6 minutes and then melt extruded and, thereafter, allowed to stand at 20.degree. C., 60% RH (relative humidity) for 24 hours of at least 85%. The thermoplastic polyurethane composition has excellent mold-ability and gives molded products being excellent in tensile strength and elongation, heat resistance, compression set, resistance to hydrolysis and like properties, and are hence useful as a raw material for various items.
