Abstract: In one aspect, an automated method is provided for updating cost data for a software application in a maintenance environment. The method includes collecting functional metrics data and determining a composite index. A maintainability index is calculated, and an average cost per full-time equivalent is recorded. A maintenance unit cost is then calculated from the composite index, the maintainability index, and the average cost per full-time equivalent. In another aspect, an automated method is provided for computing cost of a software application in an enhancement environment. The method includes collecting functional metrics data, determining a composite, and calculating a maintainability index. An average cost per full-time equivalent is recorded, and a size of the application in function points is estimated. An enhancement unit cost is then calculated from the composite index, the maintainability index, the average cost per full-time equivalent, and the estimated function point size.

Abstract: An automated internet based exchange system is described for controlling the exchanging of ownership interests in objects on a secondary market. The automated exchange includes one or more sub-exchanges for maintaining information representative of secondary market transactions and for controlling said transactions. The automated exchange includes a secondary portfolio auction sub-exchange, a pricing and valuation services sub-exchange, an electronic contract negotiation services sub-exchange and a delivery and auditing service sub-exchange. The automated exchange also includes a logic switch manager that creates opportunistic auctions from a transaction for a product or service so as to trigger further auctions or service sales on the same or different secondary markets.

Abstract: A Web-based buyer-driven system of commerce efficiently and inexpensively connects buyers and sellers. In general, the system includes a Web site globally accessible by potential buyers and sellers. Potential buyers post descriptions of products and services they desire on the Web site. Interested sellers of those products and services can access the descriptions posted by the buyers and selectively post responses to buyers. The responses preferably include information identifying the seller and describing the product or service offered by the seller. The system determines if the potential buyer retrieves a response directed to him from a potential seller and, if so, it charges that potential seller a small fee.

Abstract: A method of managing content data and associated metadata. According to the method, the content data and the associated metadata are generated. The content data is transferred to a content host, and the metadata and usage condition data for the associated content are transferred to an electronic store. The metadata and/or the usage condition data are altered in order to form promotional data, and the promotional data is transferred from the electronic store to a customer's system. In one preferred method, the content data is encrypted with a first encrypting key before being transferred to the content host. The first encrypting key is encrypted with a second encrypting key, and the encrypted first encrypting key is transferred along with the metadata and usage condition data to the electronic store. Additionally, the encrypted first encrypting key is transferred along with the promotional data to the customer's system.

Abstract: A system for recovering refundable taxes such as value-added taxes (VAT) uses a transaction card, such as a credit or debit or electronic cash card, to record purchases made by a traveler that are subject to VAT in a foreign country. The traveler loads the transaction card with a software application that is able to record the purchases subject to VAT. The traveler uses the card to make purchases in the foreign country, and the card calculates and accumulates the VAT subject to refund. When leaving the foreign country, the traveler inserts the card into a terminal, the software application reads the VAT subject to refund, and the traveler selects whether to receive the refunded VAT in cash in local currency or in the currency of the country in which the traveler resides (“home currency”), as cash value on the card (if a cash or debit card), as a credit on the card (if a credit card), or by check in local or home currency.

Abstract: An automated product pricing system including a physical store system, a virtual store system, and a control system. The physical and virtual store systems are capable of transmitting sales data indicative of the number of sales of identified respective products. The control system is adapted to receive the sales data from the physical store system and the virtual store system. In response thereto, the control system generates price change data including a changed price of an identified product based on the sales data received from at least one of the physical and virtual store systems. The price change data is then transmitted by the control system to at least one of the physical and virtual store systems to thereby change the price of the identified product.

A participant in the awards system calls or connects to an interactive platform for registering and/or redeeming credits preferably described in uniquely identified certificates. In a telephone environment, the interactive platform is connected to a toll free telephone number where a participant's call is handled by a computer controlled voice response unit. In a computer network environment, a computer user connects to the interactive platform over the network. The participant receives awards credits based on the unique identification of certificates. Award credits for a participant are accumulated in a stored record associated with the participant until redeemed. Award credits can also be acquired as an instant winner based on a random or algorithmic selection of callers to receive such credits. Awards include electronic prizes such as free long distance telephone time, electronic cash and/or service credits.

Abstract: A method and apparatus are described for managing a request queue for a jukebox system. According to one aspect of the present invention, a method is disclosed for managing a queue of a jukebox. The method includes the step of arranging a set of service identifiers in a queue based upon a time of receipt corresponding to each service identifier. The method also includes the step of receiving a request to expedite an identified service corresponding to one service identifier in the queue. According to the method, payment is then received for the request to expedite the identified service. The method further includes the steps of rearranging the plurality of service identifiers in the queue, thereby causing the identified service to be expedited, and performing the service.

Abstract: The present invention, generally speaking, makes possible an associates program for electronic content distribution by providing a mechanism whereby a referrer may be identified at the time of purchase in a download-then-pay system. At the time of purchase, a commerce module retrieves the identifier and presents it to the merchant server. Abstract: A method is provided for assessing control risk in a model-based reasoning system used for analyzing financial accounting systems by decomposing and quantifying the risk factors in the model so that the risk factors can be used to determine areas in the accounting system where sufficient control is lacking and to determine which controls are key and thus should be subject to detailed testing. Factors quantified are failure impact risk, failure coverage risk, allowable risk, control detection risk, control strength, control defeat factor, attenuation factor, and control contribution. The present invention is used to enhance a hierarchical flow chart generating system, such as the Comet system, by providing risk analysis operative on a particular class of hierarchically structured flow charts.

Abstract: A computerized arrangement for detecting potentially fraudulent suppliers or providers of goods or services includes a processor, a storage device, an input device for communicating data to the processor and storage device, and an output device for communicating data from the processor and storage device. The storage device includes a claims data file for storing information relating to a plurality of claims submitted for payment by a selected supplier or provider, one or more encoding lookup tables for use with the claims data file to produce an encoded claims data file, and a neural network program for analyzing the encoded data to produce an indicator of potentially fraudulent activity. The indicator may be compared to a predetermined threshold value by the apparatus or method to identify fraudulent suppliers. In addition to the neural network, at least one expert system may be used in the identification process.
