  • Patent number: 6523625
Abstract: A system and method for improving the traction of a vehicle uses weight distribution control to improve wheel to driving surface friction. A driven axle and a non-driven axle support a vehicle load through adjustable suspension members. The suspension members are, for example, air bags. Actuators and controllers adjust the suspension members in a selectable predetermined manner. The selection can be based on operator preference, vehicle operating mode, or a sensed loss of traction. The driven axle carries a drive axle maximum rated load in order to maximize drive wheel traction at all times.

  • Patent number: 6523842
Abstract: An improved torsion suspension system designed to limit excessive side sway conditions with a popular torsion suspension system. The improved system uses a torsion shackle bracket that bolts to the second flanged shell half used on the existing torsion suspension system. The system also includes an anti-sway rod that connects at one end to an axle mounted on the torsion shackle bracket. The opposite end of the anti-sway rod is connected to the motor vehicle frame or to a selectively attached bracket attached to the frame located across from the torsion shackle bracket. In the preferred embodiment, the anti-sway rod extends to an opposite side of the motor vehicle. During use, the ends of the anti-sway rod are able to rotate around the axles so that the shackle is able to move vertically and provide a softened ride. The rod is sufficiently rigid to limit the lateral movement of the second flanged shell half, thereby limiting side sway.

  • Patent number: 6508482
Abstract: A trailing arm axle/suspension system includes rigid or spring beams for mounting the axle directly to the beam without any or minimal, respectively, additional mounting hardware or structure. An axle mounting plate is formed as part of the preassembled rigid beam or attached to the spring beam, and is formed with a recess that can range from significantly smaller than to generally the same size as the smallest axle which will be seated therein. The axle is extruded into the recess to eliminate clearance and create intimate contact between the axle and the axle mounting plate. The force typically deforms the axle from its normal cross-sectional shape, such as round, into a generally oval or elliptical cross-sectional shape. Such clearance-free intimate contact also creates a constant preload or compression between the axle and the axle mounting plate in the recess area.

  • Patent number: 6505855
Abstract: An air bag body (1) is expanded by charging air therein after being expanded in a flat surface shape. Next, by gently gripping the air bag body (1) by upper and lower blades (26, 25) radially arranged in a radial direction of the air bag body (1), height in a radial direction of the air bag body (1) is linearly restricted along the upper and lower blades (26, 25). Next, a plurality of movable blocks (24) are forward moved toward a center of the air bag body (1), and upper and lower panels (12, 11) of the air bag body (1) are accumulated. At this time, the upper and lower panels (12, 11) of the air bag body (1) are folded in a state of being apart from each other so as to form a wave shape. Next, the air bag body (1) is rotated, a portion left in a tab shape is wound around a periphery, and a center protruding portion of the air bag body (1) is pressed from an upper side, whereby a front surface deploying portion (35) is formed.

  • Patent number: 6497431
Abstract: The adaptive airbag system is an invention that because of its unique design, will adjust an overload valve opening resistance force such that the airbag is capable of more aggressive deployment in response to a more aggressive requirement indication and such that the airbag is capable of less aggressive deployment in response to a less aggressive requirement indication. Because the adaptive airbag system employs an inflator enclosing adjustable reaction canister rather than a uniquely designed inflator per application, the invention provides for greater economies of scale in inflator production. The invention also provides for readily reprogrammable deployment parameters post airbag to vehicle installation. The invention is principally intended to avoid dangerous overly aggressive deployments such as for children and small statured adults, without sacrificing sufficiently aggressive deployments such as for larger or non seatbelted adults.

  • Patent number: 6491129
Abstract: An agricultural tractor having a rear suspension with draft compensating geometry to control the compression or extension of the rear suspension in response to a draft load. The draft compensating suspension enables the tractor hitch to be mounted on the suspended frame or chassis of the tractor rather than mounting the hitch to a non-suspended beam axle or locking out the suspension during draft work. The draft load is applied to the chassis by a ground engaging implement. The tractive load and torque at the rear wheels are reacted through the side view instantaneous center of the rear suspension. The placement of the instantaneous center will determine the suspension reaction to the wheel load and torque. Locating the suspension instantaneous center on a line of 100% draft-compensation will eliminate the motion of the suspension due to the draft load. If the instantaneous center is located below the 100% draft-compensation line, the suspension will compress under a draft load.
