Patent number: 7458970Abstract: The heating treatment device according to the present invention is constituted by a coagulation and incision forceps having a plurality of built-in heating elements, and a device main unit. A forceps identifying section inside the device main unit recognizes the identification of the type of forceps by an identifier, and information for the individual heating elements, and supplies the same to a temperature control and correction section. The temperature control and correction section reads out from a memory the resistance values for controlling required for the respective set temperatures for the respective heating elements, on the basis of this information. A heating setting section sets a resistance value for controlling for the set temperature level, from these resistance values for controlling. The resistance value detecting section calculates the resistance value for the heating elements from the measurement results of an applied power detecting section.Type: GrantFiled: October 21, 2003Date of Patent: December 2, 2008Assignee: Olympus CorporationInventor: Keisuke Miura

Patent number: 6878147Abstract: Various high-strength microwave antenna assemblies are described herein. The microwave antenna has a radiating portion connected by a feedline to a power generating source, e.g., a generator. The antenna is a dipole antenna with the distal end of the radiating portion being tapered and terminating at a tip to allow for direct insertion into tissue. Antenna rigidity comes from placing distal and proximal radiating portions in a pre-stressed state, assembling them via threaded or overlapping joints, or fixedly attaching an inner conductor to the distal portion. The inner conductor is affixed to the distal portion by, e.g., welding, brazing, soldering, or by adhesives. A junction member made from a hard dielectric material, e.g., ceramic, can be placed between the two portions and can have uniform or non-uniform shapes to accommodate varying antenna designs. Electrical chokes may also be used to contain returning currents to the distal end of the antenna.Type: GrantFiled: November 2, 2001Date of Patent: April 12, 2005Assignee: Vivant Medical, Inc.Inventors: Mani Prakash, Francesca Rossetto, Anthony Lee, Steven Kim, Ted Su, Jonathan Glassman

Patent number: 6755824Abstract: An ablation catheter stores a platelet inhibitor substance within a plurality of pockets or recesses of its shaft. The substance is adapted to elute upon contact with biological fluid. In the pocket configuration, the platelet inhibitor substance is in a capsule positioned within the pocket. In the recess configuration, the platelet inhibitor substance is in a hydrogel or silicone-based porous/semi-porous matrix positioned within the recess. Elution of the platelet inhibitor substance prevents or at least substantially minimizes the adhesion of blood platelets on the catheter surface during ablation. In another configuration, the catheter includes an internal lumen network having apertures terminating at the surface of the shaft. The lumen communicates with a source of platelet inhibitor fluid that is forced through the lumen by a variable pump.Type: GrantFiled: April 15, 2002Date of Patent: June 29, 2004Assignee: UAB Research FoundationInventors: Mudit K. Patent number: 6746446Abstract: An intravascular electrophysiology (EP) device for the mapping and/or formation of lesions along the isthmus region of a heart that has particular utility in the treatment of atrial flutter. The EP device of the invention has an elongated shaft with a proximal section, a compound-curved or modified pigtail-shaped distal section, and a plurality of at least partially exposed electrodes disposed on an outer surface of the distal section. The electrodes are spaced along a length of the distal section and may be interspersed with at least one temperature sensor located between electrodes. The shape of the distal end of the device enables manipulation of the device by inserting its distal end in the tricuspid valve and retracting the device to bias the section having electrodes along the isthmus to achieve acceptable contact with the region so high frequency (e.g., RF) electrical energy delivered to the electrodes on the distal section of the EP device will form a lesion.Type: GrantFiled: August 4, 2000Date of Patent: June 8, 2004Assignee: Cardima, Inc.Inventors: E. Patent number: 6740081Abstract: In electrosurgical system includes an electrosurgical generator providing power through an electrode, and a laser providing laser energy through an optical fiber. The electrode optical fiber and a source of environmental gas can all be included in a handpiece, catheter or other delivery device. In operation, the environmental gas can be released into the vicinity of an operative site and the laser activated to energize atoms along a pathway. Electrosurgical power can then be applied to ionize the items of the atoms of the pathway and create a path of least resistance for an electrosurgical arc. A reduction in the laser power required can be achieved by matching the photon frequency of the laser with the excitation frequency of the environmental gas. In a laparoscopic procedure, the insufflation gas may be used as the environmental gas.Type: GrantFiled: January 25, 2002Date of Patent: May 25, 2004Assignee: Applied Medical Resources CorporationInventor: Said Hilal
