Abstract: Duplex stainless steel materials containing austenite plus delta ferrite, are dimensionally stabilized by heating the material to a reaction temperature between about 1050.degree.-1450.degree. F. (566.degree.-788.degree. C.), holding it at this temperature during transformation of delta ferrite to austenite plus sigma phase, and subsequently heating to a reversion temperature between about 1625.degree.-1750.degree. F. (885.degree.-954.degree. C.), whereby the sigma phase transforms back to ferrite, but the austenite remains dispersed in the ferrite phase. Final controlled cooling permits transformation of ferrite to austenite plus sigma and, later, precipitation of carbides.

The alloy reacts with a material against which it rubs, to form the sulphide of that material on the rubbed surface. The alloy may be made by chemical reaction, fusion, vacuum deposition, or powder metallurgy. It can be used alone, or as a surface layer on, or inclusion in, another material, or it can be dispersed as a powder in a lubricant.

The alloy is heat treated by initially heating the alloy to a temperature in the range of 1600.degree. F. to 1800.degree. F. and is thereafter quenched. The quenched alloy is then subjected to a two-step aging treatment in which the alloy is initially aged at a temperature of 900.degree. F. to 1100.degree. F. to precipitate the metal silicides and develop a hardness in excess of 90 Rockwell B (185 Brinell) and subsequently is subjected to a second aging at a temperature in the range of 750.degree. F. to 900.degree. F.

Abstract: The invention relates to an economic process and apparatus for the continuous hardening of pump casings by means of flame hardening, with or without modifications to the core characteristics. As a result the life of the thus treated pump casing is considerably increased, even if it is exposed to a high degree of wear. This is achieved in that the horizontally positioned pump casing is moved past the flame hardening apparatus about a vertical axis and is simultaneously moved out of the horizontal position in such a way that the cooling water is removed over the already hardened inner wall surface.

Abstract: In a method of treating a coil spring to improve its performance and reliability when operating at elevated temperatures, the spring is first stressed by applying a load of preselected magnitude and then, while the load is maintained, the spring is heated until it relaxes or collapses to a predetermined extent at which stage the heating is automatically discontinued and the applied load is afterwards removed. Apparatus for carrying out the method in relation to compression springs includes a spring supporting base, an overhead operating head with a vertically movable ram or plunger for applying the predetermined load, means for passing an electric heating current through each spring while beneath the operating head, and limit switch means which responds to the position of the ram or plunger and terminates the supply of heating current when the loaded spring has reached the required predetermined value of relaxation or collapse.

Abstract: Shoes for operatively connecting a swash-plate with the compression pistons of a swash-plate type compressor are made from a novel Cu-based alloy. Improved shoes are characterized by a combination of high heat conductivity and excellent wear resistance properties particularly when subjected to a lubricating condition so severe that no lubricating oil is supplied to the surface of the shoes at the initial period of the compressor operation. Phosphorus and elements of C group (Pb and/or Sn), as well as elements of A group (Mn and Si) and/or B group (the IVb and VIb groups of the periodic table), are added in predetermined amounts to the Cu-based alloy, so that the properties mentioned above are simultaneously obtained. The compressor according to the present invention can be reliably employed, without the occurrence of seizure over a long operational period for air-conditioning vehicles, in which the sliding condition of the shoes is drastically varied with the rotation of the engine.
Abstract: A process is provided for the forming of articles from leaded bronzes of copper alloy base having a lead content of at least 4% and which process includes cold working, in the forming of products or articles, and specifically the forming of bearings. Basically, the process of this invention comprises the forming of stock by chill casting techniques and the subsequent alternate steps of cold working and annealing the chill cast stock of predetermined configuration in forming of a substantially finished product or article having predetermined dimensions and configurations. Abstract: In the heat treatment (quenching treatment, tempering treatment, etc.) of long metallic material, such as, large diameter steel pipe or the like, in order to stabilize the speed of travel of the material through a heat treating zone, i.e., a zone including a heating unit, such as, an induction heating coil or gas burning type heating furnace and a following cooling unit of the type utilizing either one or both of air blast and water cooling, the material is gripped by two cars which are arranged respectively at the entry and delivery ends of the zone and the cars are moved, while supporting the material by a plurality of free rotatable rollers, so as to move the material at a desired speed. In this case, one of the cars is driven and the other car applies a braking force, thus moving the material at the desired speed through the zone.
