Patent number: 6989739Abstract: A multi-window vehicular monitoring system has a data collection assembly, a console unit and multiple video cameras. The data collection assembly uses RF signal transmission to send distance data, and the console unit is further connected to a monitor and several video cameras. The system employs an image overlay controller to correlate the distance data and images to produce single-channel or multiple-channel video signals. With a continuous display of video images from all angles and constantly updated distance data, the vehicle driver becomes more aware of conditions around the vehicle at any given time. Thus no blind spots exist for the driver around the vehicle. Using such a monitoring system, a driver's visibility and safety can be considerably enhanced under all driving conditions.Type: GrantFiled: January 22, 2004Date of Patent: January 24, 2006Inventor: Shih-Hsiung Li

Patent number: 6987461Abstract: Various methods are disclosed relating to optical emanations from a light source or a first optical device that is intended to display a state of a serial data stream that crosses an interface that is associated with an information processing device. In one embodiment, the first optical device is modulated in a manner so as to not replicate the data signal being provided to and/or transmitted from the information processing device. In another embodiment, the optical emanations from the first optical device are monitored so as to be able to recover the data that is being transmitted to the information processing device in the form of a first data signal. In yet another embodiment, the cumulative optical output of a plurality of first optical devices associated with a plurality of information processing devices is monitored and evaluated in the form of a cumulative signal so as to decode each of the various individual data signals.Type: GrantFiled: February 12, 2002Date of Patent: January 17, 2006Assignee: Lockheed Martin CorporationInventor: Robert Joseph Loughry

Patent number: 6985073Abstract: The invention provides traffic safety apparatus including light-to-frequency converters for monitoring the status of traffic signals and tail lights of same lane close proximity preceding vehicles and when dangerous or potentially dangerous conditions are detected, visually and/or audibly providing an alert signal to the driver. The monitored information can be real-time recorded in the drivers vehicle and if desired, transmitted by wireless to off-vehicle receivers. Recording the information in the vehicle establishes an operational history that can be important for such uses as accident reconstruction, whereas information transmitted by wireless can be recorded by entities such as law enforcement, thereby adding an additional measure of traffic safety as well as providing documentation of driving infractions.Type: GrantFiled: December 20, 2004Date of Patent: January 10, 2006Inventor: Duc Doan

Patent number: 6977578Abstract: Isolating data in a power line communications system. Although plural subscribers receive electric power distributed from a common distribution transformer, it is desirable to isolate their branch lines from one another when those branch lines are used to conduct data communications as a supplement to electric power delivery. This isolation of branch lines implemented in a centralized way at the distribution transformer, or alternatively, in a distributed way at each subscriber's premises. These implementations are made using low pass filters (which pass the power but block the data) and power line communications routers or power line communications repeaters.Type: GrantFiled: January 19, 2001Date of Patent: December 20, 2005Assignee: Current Technologies, LLCInventor: Paul A. Patent number: 6970101Abstract: A method of matching a vehicle with a vacant parking space in a parking facility having numerous parking spaces. The method includes storing identifying characteristics of each of the parking spaces in a database. To request a parking space, a garage customer inputs data concerning his or her preferences for parking. The inventive method then determines which of the plurality of parking spaces are vacant, matches the data inputted by the user with the data identifying characteristics of each of the parking spaces determined to be vacant, and determines which of the parking spaces determined to be vacant most closely matches the data inputted by the user. The closest parking space is reserved for parking by the user.Type: GrantFiled: April 21, 2003Date of Patent: November 29, 2005Inventors: James C Squire, Jenny L Dinneen, Brian D Holt, Tsung-ta Ho, Troy J Siemers

Patent number: 6954141Abstract: A tire monitoring apparatus for a vehicle has plural transmitters arranged in plural tires for detecting air pressure of the corresponding tire and transmitting information including a detecting result by a radio wave, plural receivers for receiving the information transmitted from the respective transmitters, and signal receiving sensitivity changing means for changing signal receiving sensitivities. In the apparatus, each of the receivers is arranged in such a manner that a distance between one receiver and its corresponding transmitter is made shorter than the other distances between the one receiver and the other transmitters. A control means controls the signal receiving sensitivity changing means such that each of the receivers receives only the information included in the radio wave, which has a largest signal receiving level among the radio waves transmitted from the plural transmitters.Type: GrantFiled: January 21, 2005Date of Patent: October 11, 2005Assignee: Denso CorporationInventors: Takatoshi Sekizawa, Hiromasa Hayashi, Akihiro Taguchi

Patent number: 6950027Abstract: A method for awakening a drowsy driver includes monitoring the drowsiness level of the driver and alerting the driver. The driver is alerted by regulating the temperature in the vehicle interior, releasing oxygen in the vehicle interior, and adjusting the positioning of a window and/or sunroof to vent fresh cooler air into the vehicle. The window and/or sunroof are opened proportionally to the drowsiness level of the driver. The wind entering the vehicle also creates an audible alert which assists in awakening the driver.Type: GrantFiled: January 29, 2001Date of Patent: September 27, 2005Assignee: Siemens VDO Automotive CorporationInventor: Patrick A. Patent number: 6950011Abstract: A vehicle-motion based vehicle theft detection device uses preexisting vehicle motion sensors in combination with an engine immobilizer system to detect and deter potential vehicle theft. Depending on whether or not a valid ignition key is in use, the engine immobilizer system sends signals to an electronic module to enter either a “disarmed” or “armed” state. When a vehicle sensor relays a signal to an electronic module, the electronic module determines, based on this signal, if the vehicle is in motion. If a valid key is in use, the electronic module is in a disarmed state and takes no further action, as the motor vehicle is authorized for motion. If, however, a valid key is not in use, the electronic module is in an armed state, and activates the vehicle alarm system which, in turn, may activate an audible or visual alarm, activate a remote notification device, generate a tracking signal, and/or store evidence of unauthorized vehicle motion in memory.Type: GrantFiled: February 18, 2003Date of Patent: September 27, 2005Assignee: General Motors CorporationInventors: Thomas E.
