  • Patent number: 4278054
Abstract: An ignition timing method and apparatus for presetting the ignition timing of an internal combustion engine having a rotatable shaft and a wheel supported on that shaft carrying a portion of the ignition system with another portion of that ingition system supported by the engine in a relatively fixed position adjacent the wheel. A slot is provided in the shaft surface generally parallel to the axis of rotation of that shaft and a further slot is provided along an inner hub of the wheel so as to be generally alignable with the shaft slot when the wheel is supported on the shaft. A selected one of several different keys is captured between the wheel hub and the shaft so that a portion of the selected key occupies the shaft slot and another portion of the selected key occupies the wheel slot to thereby fix the angular relationship between the shaft and wheel at an angular offset determined by the particular key selected.

  • Patent number: 4198937
Abstract: A pneumatic control apparatus is disclosed for an engine exhaust emission control device which includes a passage 101 for applying a negative intake passage pressure to a chamber of a differential pressure responsive unit 10 an atmospheric venting vacuum control valve 30 is provided for selectively venting the passage 101. The negative pressure chamber 37 of the valve 30 is controlled by an orifice unit 40 which supplies atmospheric pressure and/or negative pressures from spaced positions in the intake passage proximate the throttle valve 2 via flow restrictors 43, 44, whereby suitable response delays are provided. A further restrictor and check valve connected in parallel may also be employed to alter the response time. The proper selection of the restrictor flow resistances and the biasing spring strengths in the various control valves enables a wide range of operational control.

  • Patent number: 4197822
Abstract: A carbureting type fuel metering apparatus has an induction passage into which fuel is fed by several fuel metering systems among which are a main fuel metering system and an idle fuel metering system, as generally known in the art; electrical circuit means responsive to signals produced by associated engine exhaust gas analyzing means, sensitive to selected constituents of such exhaust gas and also responsive to other selected indicia of vehicle and/or engine operating conditions, creates feedback signal means which through associated transducer means become effective for controllably modulating the metering characteristics of the main fuel metering system and the idle fuel metering system.

  • Patent number: 4183335
Abstract: In a fuel mixture control system including an exhaust gas sensor located within an exhaust system of an internal combustion engine, maximum and minimum peak values of the gas sensor output are detected. A direct-current pedestal is added to the detected minimum peak value. A comparator detects when the added minimum peak exceeds the detected maximum peak value to provide a disabling signal to the mixture control system to switch its operational mode from closed loop control to open loop control when the temperature of the gas sensor falls below its operating temperature typically during prolonged idle condition.

  • Patent number: 4157701
Abstract: There is disclosed an automatic control system for limiting the operating temperature of a diesel engine having a pressurized intake manifold such as a turbocharged diesel engine. The system includes a pyrometer to sense the exhaust gas temperature from the engine and generate a signal therefrom, a temperature controller having an adjustable, maximum set point temperature to receive the signal from the pyrometer and to generate a control signal which is applied to a control valve in the manifold pressure line which applies manifold pressure to a pressure cell such as an aneroid unit that proportionally controls the position of the rack of the fuel supply. The control valve vents the manifold pressure line to the atmosphere and reduces the pressure on the aneroid unit to reposition the fuel rack in response to a sensed exhaust gas temperature which exceeds the preselected maximum set point temperature.

  • Patent number: 4138976
Abstract: An ignition system for an internal combustion engine comprises a distributor containing a pair of magnetic pick-up devices each of which generates signals at a frequency representative of engine speed. One pick-up is used normally during starting of the engine to fire the engine spark plugs, and the other pick-up during running. An automatic transfer circuit is provided to transfer control from the first, or start, pick-up to the second, or run, pick-up when the engine begins to run under its own power and accelerate from cranking speed. Should a condition occur indicative of a lack of signals from the run pick-up above a predetermined minimum frequency, the transfer circuit transfers control of ignition firing back to the start pick-up.

  • Patent number: 4111174
Abstract: An alternator driven capacitive discharge ignition system includes a tachometer circuit monitoring the speed-dependent repetition rate of discharge at an internal trigger power supply, the tachometer circuit causing the triggering threshold bias to be reduced below idle speed to electronically advance the timing. The ignition circuit includes a triggering threshold bias capacitor in series the trigger pulse source and a trigger power supply having a pilot capacitor to alternately fire a pair of ignition silicon controlled rectifiers. The pilot capacitor is charged in series with an RC filter network of a "bucket" tachometer circuit to create a speed signal voltage proportional to engine speed with the pilot capacitor functioning as the bucket capacitor. The speed signal is a voltage which is positive relative to a common signal ground while the threshold bias capacitor voltage is negative relative to such signal ground.
