  • Patent number: 5080691
Abstract: Light olefins are converted to gasoline with a high enough content of ethers to provide a significant octane improvement over a base (or `cracking`) gasoline (clear RON=90-92; clear MON=79-80). One portion of the olefins is hydrated to produce alcohols, and the other is used to synthesize an olefin-rich gasoline. The alcohols are used to etherify the gasoline. The combination of unit operations minimizes the energy needed to run the process for which no external solvent is needed. The process capitalizes on the higher solubility in gasoline of ethanol, propanol and butanol, compared to methanol. Besides having very low solubility in gasoline, etherification with methanol or ethanol produces an inadequately rewarding increase in octane number, compared to propanol or isopropanol. Taking advantage of the inherent chemical and physical properties of C.sub.3 -C.sub.

  • Patent number: 5078751
Abstract: A process is disclosed for upgrading C.sub.5 -C.sub.8 olefin-containing gasoline to a high octane motor gasoline blending component.C.sub.3 -C.sub.4 olefins are hydrated to alcohols and then selectively removed from the aqueous hydration reactor effluent stream via liquid extraction with the gasoline feedstream. The alcohol enriched gasoline extract stream is then etherified and unreacted alcohols are extracted to yield a high octane gasoline blending component free of metal-bearing additives.

  • Patent number: 5066310
Abstract: A method and apparatus for removing light hydrocarbons, such as heptane, from coal agglomerates includes an enclosed chamber having a substantially horizontal perforate surface therein. The coal agglomerates are introduced into a water bath within the chamber. The agglomerates are advanced over the surface while steam is substantially continuously introduced through the surface into the water bath. Steam heats the water and causes volatilization of the light hydrocarbons, which may be collected from the overhead of the chamber. The resulting agglomerates may be collected at the opposite end from the surface and subjected to final draining processes prior to transportation or use.

  • Patent number: 5062906
Abstract: The present invention is to produce non-oriented electrical steel sheet by a hot direct rolling. The slab is directly sent to the hot rolling without the brief soaking, whereby others than AlN inevitably precipitated check the precipitation of AlN, a roughing and a finish rolling are performed at determined reduction rates, and a delay time is taken between the roughing and the finish rolling, and besides a finish rolling is performed at not more than Ar.sub.3 so that precipitating nuclei of AlN are effectively introduced into the steel, and uniform and coarse AlN precipitation is formed by a coiling at temperature of more than 700.degree. C., thereby to enable to provide uniform and satisfied ferrite grain growth at the recrystallization annealing.

  • Patent number: 5062863
Abstract: A diesel fuel composition comprising a major portion of middle distillates and a minor wear improving amount of a 1,3,4-thiadiazole derived from 2,5-dimercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole and one or two moles of polyolefin having 50 to 400 carbon atoms. Furthermore, the 5-position of the 2-mercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole may be substituted by alkylthio, 2-hydroxyalkylthio, amino or hydroxy group. The 1,3,4-thiadiazole compounds are also effective dispersants when incorporated into fuel compositions.

  • Patent number: 5059217
Abstract: The invention relates to a fluid treating device for treatment of gasoline or diesel fuel for land and/or water vehicles. The liquid fuel treating device has an elongated housing provided with liquid fuel lines on opposite ends thereof. A central opening in the housing houses a metal bar which is formed with an alloy, the metal composition including copper, nickel, zinc, tin, magnesium and silicon. The liquid fuel is forced through the liquid fuel line into the housing, wherein it contracts the metal bar and exits through a second liquid fuel line as a treated liquid fuel with improved characteristics, substantially free of pollutants.

  • Patent number: 5055210
Abstract: The technique of the instant invention includes the preparation of a new mechanical seal life prolonger (SLP) by the compounding of a relatively few, inexpensive, and readily available materials. The instant technique is simply and easily placed into practice by, for example, applying relatively small amounts of such compound to the outside edges or peripheral portions of the relative movement interface between the seal faces of mechanical seals in association with fluid handling devices while such devices are in an operating mode. Depending on the degree of disruption of the sealing surfaces, a single application of such compound is sometimes sufficient to obtain the desired results or it may be necessary to subsequently apply such compound to the leaking seal at regular intervals subsequent to the first application thereof, until such time as it may be convenient to replace such seal faces.

  • Patent number: 5053156
Abstract: A process for producing ferrite powder for high performance ferrite magnets is claimed, which comprises: milling magnetite or mill scale into a powder comprising particles of specified particle size; oxidizing the milled product to obtain a powder containing 98.0% or higher Fe.sub.2 O.sub.3 ; further adding thereto iron oxide originated from iron chloride or iron sulfide together with an oxide or a carbonate of Sr or Ba; and calcining the resulting powder mixture. The present invention provides a low-cost process for producing ferrite powder for ferrite magnets having high pellet strength as well as high magnetic properties, from which a high performance Sr-ferrite magnet as well as Ba-ferrite magnet suitable for use in automobile motors can be readily produced by simply molding the powder under a magnetic field and sintering.
