    Abstract: A binder for nonwoven fabrics is provided comprising a cationic polyurethane having an ionic charge density sufficient to render the fabric dispersible in aqueous solutions of relatively low ionic strength yet resistant to body fluids. The water-dispersible nonwoven fabrics comprise one or more layers of substantially uniformly laid fibers bound with the cationic polyurethane; exhibit good tensile strength in the presence of body fluids such as urine, blood and menstrual fluid; and can be incorporated in body fluid-retaining products such as sanitary napkins, disposable diapers, surgical dressings and the like. Binders containing condensation residues of a polyisocyanate with an aliphatic polyester polyol are biodegradable.

    Abstract: Ceramic bodies coated or joined to one another with ceramic eutectic compositions of alumina, silica and rare earth oxides melting below 1600.degree. C are described. An exemplary composition contains about 20 weight percent alumina, 58 weight percent silica, and 22 weight percent yttria. Composite structures of such bodies exhibit good to excellent thermal shock resistance, resistance to chemical attack, and joint strengths between bodies and coatings or between various silica, alumina and rare earth oxide based ceramics joined together or to each other.

    Abstract: There is disclosed a web of record assemblies and a method of using same. The web is a composite web constructed by using both a longitudinally extending web of supporting material and a web of label material releasably adhered to the supporting material by means of pressure sensitive adhesive. The composite web is formed into a plurality of record assemblies by means of a plurality of transversely spaced-apart lines of partial severing in the supporting material and by either butt cutting or die cutting the label material. The label material of each record assembly is, according to one embodiment, partially severed along a longitudinal line and the supporting material is completely severed along the same longitudinal line. The label material on one side of the longitudinal line is divided into record sections containing one or more labels.

    Abstract: A polishing method for single crystal dielectrics such as sapphire and magnesium spinel is disclosed. A single crystal wafer of sapphire or magnesium spinel is immersed in a mixture of sulphuric and phosphoric acid in a range of mixtures of 9 parts sulphuric acid to 1 part phosphoric acid to 1 part sulphuric acid to 9 parts phosphoric acid by volume while the mixture is held at a temperature in the range of 200.degree.-325.degree.C. The rate of polishing as well as the quality of polishing of the wafers of sapphire or magnesium spinel is orientation sensitive and polishing is achieved for magnesium spinel having the orientations (100) and (110). Polishing is achieved for sapphire having the orientations (0001), (1123), (1100), (1124), (1120) and (0112). A wafer to be polished is suspended in the heated solution and may be rotated slowly. Nonpreferential material removal rates of fractions of a micron per minute are obtained.

    Abstract: A coated, decorative panel or tile of molded fibrous material is provided. A pad or pelt of mineral fibers, preferably glass fibers held together by a binder in an uncured state, is compressed and heated in a matched metal contoured mold to the desired permanent shape, after which a finish coating is supplied. The fibers of the panel are heterogeneously arranged with most fibers being parallel to the contoured surface of the product but with some lying angularly with respect thereto. Also, some portions of the uncured fiber pad may be compressed in the mold to a greater extent than others. In addition, the concentration of binder may also vary widely over the product. These factors result in a variation in the apparent density, and when the panel is subsequently coated, the degree of absorption of the coating material differs widely, resulting in an undesirable nonuniform appearance.

    Abstract: Building materials of the type containing an impermeable membrane, as for example, an insulation material, or a wall board, or ceiling tile are provided. The impermeable membrane is first formed upon a sheet of paper which gives structural rigidity to the membrane, and is then used as an adhesive to hold the paper onto a porous body by heating the membrane to a softened condition and pressing it against the porous body. The membrane is preferably made in two steps wherein a first application of a thermoplastic latex is put on the paper and then a second application of latex is applied to seal pores in the film produced by the first application of latex. A fire retardant i.e. either a flame retardant salt in the paper or a halogen liberating resin coating on the outside surface is provided to liberate flame extinguishing gases to be held in place by the vapor barrier.
