Patent number: 4662055Abstract: A flange alignment tool comprises a body portion having a first, relatively flat surface disposed for abutting engagement with a rear surface of a pipe flange and a second, curvilinear surface adjacent the first surface and shaped for complementary engagement with a curvilinear neck portion of the pipe flange adjacent the rear surface thereof. First and second spaced apart aligning pins extend through the body portion and include projecting flange-engaging pin ends positioned for alignment with an adjacent pair of through apertures in the flange. Resilient springs urge the aligning pins in a predetermined direction for encouraging positive engagement of the flange-engaging pin ends with the through apertures.Type: GrantFiled: March 15, 1985Date of Patent: May 5, 1987Assignee: CF Industries, Inc.Inventor: Charles VanMeter

Patent number: 4651402Abstract: The cylinder may be an aircraft landing gear axle. The items may be pick- to sense axle deformation. A ring (30) for supporting the pick-ups is made of highly resilient material. It is initially of such a size that its cylinder-engaging surface overlaps the cylindrical surface it is to engage. The ring is then deformed by urging at least two points (34 to 37) around its circumference to increase the degree of overlap. While maintaining the deforming force on the ring, its cylinder-engaging surface (31) is machined so that there is no longer any overlap, and still maintaining the force, the ring is engaged with the cylinder. The force is then removed. The said points move resiliently away from the cylinder, but intermediate points are consequently resiliently urged into contact with the cylinder. The contact is smooth and progressive, thus avoiding the kind of stress concentrations that could reduce cylinder life by fatigue, etc.Type: GrantFiled: April 19, 1984Date of Patent: March 24, 1987Assignee: Societe Europeene pour la Defense de l'Invention et de la CreationInventor: Georges Bonfils

Patent number: 4644624Abstract: A process for the manufacture of half bearings with flanges rigidly connected thereto, made of a steel plate with an antifriction layer, in which the plain (i.e. not yet flanged) half bearing and a pair of flanges are produced and worked separately, and subsequently the two flanges are fixed, in the correct position, onto the half bearing by a welding operation carried out by projection or by condenser discharge. The preparation and working of the thus separate components results in being very economical owing both to the reduction of the operational costs and to a considerable reduction of the cost of the necessary equipment, and the production times are remarkably reduced. The welding step requires very short times and, by the suitable choice of the process used for the welding operation, no deterioration of the antifriction layer applied to the support steel plate occurs, nor any deformation of the plate itself, so that no further working on the finished piece is required.Type: GrantFiled: June 26, 1984Date of Patent: February 24, 1987Assignee: Federal-Mogul CorporationInventor: Mario Fontana

Patent number: 4639993Abstract: A fuel rod-loading fixture for expediting the loading of fuel rods in an empty skeleton of a fuel rod assembly is disclosed herein. The fuel rod-loading fixture generally comprises a square array of non-radioactive "dummy" rods which are all connected at their top ends to a top guide plate. When the rods of the fixture are lowered through the rod-receiving apertures of the grids in the fuel assembly skeleton, they effectively obstruct every other set of mutually aligned, rod-receiving apertures in the grids of the skeleton. The top guide plate includes a plurality of apertures which will automatically register with the remaining sets of mutually aligned apertures in the grids, in order that fuel rods may be inserted through the top guide plate and into the remaining sets of apertures in the grids.Type: GrantFiled: June 20, 1985Date of Patent: February 3, 1987Assignee: Westinghouse Electric Corp.Inventor: Anoop Kapoor

Patent number: 4633554Abstract: This is a method for repairing low alloy steel steam turbine (both high pressure and low pressure sections) or generator rotors. The defective section of the original rotor is removed and a replacement end is used, with mating attachments machined on the replacement end and the original rotor. The inner portion of the weld joining the replacement end to the original rotor is provided by a narrow gap weld, either by gas metal or by submerged arc welding. The outer 1/2-2 inches of the weld is provided by gas tungsten arc welding. The mating attachment and at least the inside 1/4 inch of the weld is bored out to remove possible crack initiation sites and to provide a smooth inspectable bore. In this manner, a fast and reliable technique is provided which provides accurate alignment, fast, essentially distortion free welding, and the superior mechanical properties of gas tungsten arc welding in the outer, more highly stressed zones.Type: GrantFiled: August 8, 1985Date of Patent: January 6, 1987Assignee: Westinghouse Electric Corp.Inventors: Robert E.
