    Abstract: Packet routing via payload inspection at routers in a core of a distributed network for use in distributing content according to quality of service guarantees. Packets contain subjects and attributes in addition to routing information. The subjects correspond with particular types of content for subscriptions, and the attributes encapsulate the data or content. The subscriptions are associated with particular quality of service guarantees or levels of service. The routers store filters corresponding with subscriptions to content. Upon receiving a packet, a router inspects the payload section of the packet containing the attributes in order to retrieve the attributes and match them to the filters for the subscriptions. If the attributes satisfies a filter, the packet is routed to the next link in accordance with the quality of service guarantee associated with that filter. If the attributes do not satisfy any of the filters injected to and stored at the router, the router discards the packet.

    Abstract: A method and system is provided for increasing participation in a standby router protocol (SRP) without increasing the amount of network traffic due to SRP messaging. One or more domain master VLANs participate in an SRP on behalf of numerous member VLANs belonging to the domain master VLAN's domain. The domain master VLANs are associated with at least one virtual router. Each domain member VLAN follows the current default routing configuration for the domain master VLAN as determined in accordance with the SRP election process defined for that virtual router. An end-host attached to a host-specific port on an SRP router participates in the SRP by using a router bridge connection established between the SRP router and other SRP routers supporting the virtual router. Each end-host on a host-specific port follows the current default routing configuration implemented by the current master SRP router as determined in accordance with the SRP election process defined for that virtual router.

    Abstract: Data can be replicated over a network using a one or two phase method. For the one phase method, a master server containing an original copy of the data sends a version number for the current state of the data to each slave on the network so that each slave can request a delta from the master. The delta that is requested contains the data necessary to update the slave to the appropriate version of the data. For the two phase method, the master server sends a packet of information to each slave. The packet of information can be committed by the slaves if each slave is able to process the commit.

    Abstract: A remote management system is coupled to a target information handling system so that a virtual device on the remote system can transmit information such as software, data, applications and upgrades to the target system. The target system includes a local real device such as a media drive which is switchably coupled to a channel of the target system. Upon command from the remote management system the target system switches the channel from a connection with the local real device to a connection with the remote virtual device. Software installations by a remote operator at the remote system are thus facilitated. In this manner the channel is shared between the local real device and the remote virtual device.

    Abstract: A system and method are provided for establishing an Instant Messenger (IM) reflector service. The method comprises: establishing an interface between an IM network server and an IM master client identified with a first username; establishing a reflector service between the IM master client and an IM peer client; and, identifying the IM peer client with the first username. That is, IM messages associated with the first username are routed via the IM master client. Alternately stated, IM messages are communicated between the IM network and all IM clients identified with the first username. More specifically, communicating IM messages with all IM clients identified with the first username includes: the IM master client receiving IM messages from the IM network, addressed to the first username; and, the IM master client distributing the IM messages to IM peer clients identified with the first username, via the reflector service.
