  • Patent number: 8841898
Abstract: Described herein is a self-powered system for detecting a current spike. The current spike is delivered through a current return network that energizes a resonant circuit to produce an alternating electrical output. The output is rectified by a rectifier into direct output that is then transferred to an integrator circuit. The integrator circuit slowly builds to and dissipates from a voltage threshold corresponding to an output transistor. When the output transistor is triggered by the voltage threshold this trigger is communicated to a fault monitoring software that recognizes the current spike.

  • Patent number: 8829920
Abstract: Disclosed are a circuit and method for amplifying the power of a multi-tone input signal. The multi-tone input signal is filtered separating out one signal having a tone at a fundamental frequency from another signal having additional tones at additional frequencies. The signal having the tone at the fundamental frequency is amplified and then filtered removing any harmonics added during amplification. The signals are then recombined generating a multi-tone output signal, wherein the tone at the fundamental frequency is boosted (i.e., has a higher power in the multi-tone output signal than in the multi-tone input signal), but the additional tones at the additional frequencies are not (i.e., the additional tones at the additional frequencies have essentially the same power in the multi-tone output and input signals). Also disclosed herein are embodiments of a testing system and method incorporating the above-described circuit to allow for testing of high power devices.

  • Patent number: 8829908
Abstract: Methods and related systems are described for making an electromagnetic induction survey of a formation surrounding a cased section of a borehole. An electromagnetic transmitter and/or receiver is deployed into the cased section of the borehole. Electromagnetic survey measurements and impedance measurements relating to impedance of the transmitter and/or receiver are made while deployed in the section of the borehole. Compensation is made for the attenuation amplitude and/or phase in the electromagnetic survey measurements due to the conductive casing. The compensation is based on the impedance measurements and equivalent circuit parameters. The impedance measurements are correlated with numerical modeling results of a purely inductive electromagnetic transducer, and calculated equivalent circuit parameters are combined with the numerical modeling results.

  • Patent number: 8816679
Abstract: This disclosure describes techniques for sensing an angular position of a rotating object over an angular position range that includes up to 360 degrees using an arc position encoder comprising a substantially 180-degree angular position sensing range. The encoder may include a base comprising an arc length defined by a first and a second end, one or more magnetic field sensors disposed within the base between the first and second ends, and one or more polarity transition sensors also disposed within the base between the first and second ends. The encoder may further include a magnetic target that includes first and second magnetic poles disposed on opposite ends so as to generate a uniform magnetic field, wherein the magnetic target is coupled to the rotating object so as to rotate about an axis of rotation located substantially in a center of a circle defined by the base.

  • Patent number: 8749243
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for detecting nearby conductors such as pipes, well casing, etc., from within a borehole. A nearby casing string can be detected by transmitting an electromagnetic signal from a first antenna on a downhole logging tool and measuring a response signal with a second antenna. As the tool rotates, the transmitting and measuring are repeated to determine the azimuthal dependence of the response signal. The azimuthal dependence is analyzed to determine an diagonal component and a cross component. The amplitude of the diagonal component is indicative of distance to the conductive feature. Direction can be determined based on the diagonal component alone or in combination with the cross component. Sinusoidal curve fitting can be employed to improve accuracy of the distance and direction estimates. At least one of the antennas is preferably tilted. Measurement results are presented for parallel tilted and perpendicular tilted antennas.
