  • Patent number: 5978662
Abstract: A circuit having a Cartesian amplifier is disclosed. The Cartesian amplifier includes a re-combining stage which re-combines an input signal from a signal source with a correction signal to output a result signal. A first mixer mixes the result signal with a first oscillating signal from a local oscillator. A power amplifier amplifies the mixed signal and a coupler couples part of the amplified signal to form an outcoupling signal. A feedback path has a second mixer for forming the correction signal by mixing the outcoupling signal with a second oscillating signal from the local oscillator. An envelope curve detector detects the envelope of the amplified signal to produce an envelope signal, and a phase adjustor adjusts the phase of the first or second oscillating signal. A control circuit is provided to control the phase errors in a phase locked loop of the Cartesian amplifier and to minimized the envelope signal.

  • Patent number: 5974328
Abstract: A mobile radio telephone communication systems provides for rapid system access and registration of mobile phones when the mobile phone operates in an area outside of its home service area. A preferred mobile phone system for a mobile phone is identified before the mobile phone originates a call by determining a location for the mobile phone and selecting the preferred system from a database stored in the mobile phone using the determined location.

  • Patent number: 5974312
Abstract: An electronic device has a microprocessor operable in a plurality of modes including a memory update mode, a nonvolatile memory and a wireless communication interface for receiving data over a wireless communication channel. In one embodiment, the electronic device includes a wake-up or timer circuit for automatically placing the electronic device in a wireless memory update mode. Data received by said wireless communication interface is stored in the nonvolatile memory by the microprocessor in response to receipt of the data while the microprocessor is in memory update mode. A programming unit for transmitting update data has a microprocessor, a wireless communication interface and a memory containing update data. A communication path is established between the programming unit and the electronic device. A system for updating data stored in a nonvolatile memory of a plurality of electronic devices includes a programming unit and a plurality of electronic devices.

  • Patent number: 5974313
Abstract: A system and method for determining an urgency class of a disturbance occurring in a base station of a cellular communication system. A list of possible disturbances that can emerge during the functioning of the base station and the preliminary urgency classes determined for the disturbances concerned is maintained in a memory. In order to enable more accurate urgency classification, a preliminary urgency class is searched out from the memory corresponding to disturbances in question. An alarm urgency class is conditioned with the communications state of the base station by detaining a less urgent class than the preliminary urgency class when the communications state of the base station is peaceful (i.e., not busy). When the communication state of the base station is busy, a more urgent class than that of the preliminary urgency class is determined for the alarm.

  • Patent number: 5970403
Abstract: A channel resource utilization level associated with a particular cell area is continuously evaluated against a predefined threshold value. The imposed threshold value indicates the minimum level of channel resource utilization desired by the serving mobile telecommunications network. In response to a determination from the evaluation that a particular cell area is being under-utilized, a message indicating that a reduced air-time rate is being offered is broadcast to all mobile stations currently traveling within the affected cell area.

  • Patent number: 5966650
Abstract: An arrangement for the detection of fraudulent use of a telephone subscriber's instrument in a mobile telephone system includes an input preprocessor (110), a neural network engine (111) coupled to the preprocessor, and an output postprocessor (112) coupled to the neural network engine. The preprocessor determines for each subscriber a first long term calling profile, a second short term calling profile, and a subscriber profile pattern comprising the difference between the first and second profiles. Each calling profile and subscriber profile pattern comprises a set of values for a respective set of call attributes. The neural network engine comprises a self organizing map trained to effect pattern recognition of the subscriber profile patterns and a multilayer perceptron adapted to determine for each recognized pattern a value indicative of the probability of a fraud being associated with that pattern.

  • Patent number: 5963562
Abstract: Systems and methods for determining the spectral arrangement of a composite signal that includes a plurality of individual signals, so that one or more individual signals may be separated from the composite signal. According to one embodiment, a first set of samples are taken from the composite signal during a first time duration, and a second set of samples are taken from the composite signal during a second time duration. The first and second time durations are selected such that at least a portion of the second time duration does not temporally overlap the first time duration. A weighing function is applied to the first and second sets of samples to generate weighted sample sets. The autocorrelation between the first and second weighted sample sets is measured, thereby providing information about the bandwidth occupancies of each of a plurality of individual signals within the bandwidth of the composite signal.

  • Patent number: 5930715
Abstract: A transcoder of a communication system is arranged to selectively embed (104) a data pattern into a call (102) to produce a slow-rate data channel in the call emanating from a switch. The data pattern includes a call identity that uniquely identifies how the call is routed through the communication system. In the event that transcoder detects (106) this call identity during subsequent routing of the call back to the switch, the transcoder identifies that the call can be routed directly through the switch and therefore instructs (112) the communication system to execute a local routing operation in which control information is routed throughout the communication system while traffic information generated in the call is routed directly through the switch, as illustrated in FIG. 4.
