  • Patent number: 10126496
Abstract: In accordance with the present invention the switching element of an optical switch for switching/modulating an optical signal from one optical waveguide to another is a reverse bias diode. More particularly, the diode is itself an optical waveguide that has been doped to create a predetermined depletion width, Wd, between the N-type and IP-type regions of the diode. In operation, an optical signal is input into the waveguide/diode in a manner that generates a second order mode for the optical signal. The second order mode optical signal then transits the waveguide/diode back and forth through the depletion width Wd. A switching voltage, V?, which is selectively applied to the waveguide/diode, can then alter the depletion width Wd of the waveguide/diode. Consequently, the propagation interference distance, ?c, of the waveguide/diode will also be changed, to thereby direct the optical signal from one output optical filter to another.

  • Patent number: 10073218
Abstract: Double-clad optical fibers with polymer outer coatings are used in fiber amplifiers and fiber lasers to guide and amplify light. As the optical power increases, the optical fibers must dissipate more heat. Unfortunately, it is difficult to dissipate heat through a polymer cladding, especially at high altitude, without introducing phase noise in the optical signal. To overcome this problem, the inventors have realized metallized polymer-clad optical fibers with superior heat dissipation characteristics than conventional polymer-clad optical fibers. An example metallized polymer-clad optical fiber includes a thin chrome layer that is vacuum-deposited onto the polymer cladding at low temperature, then electroplated with a thicker copper layer. In operation, the copper layer dissipates heat from within the fiber's core and claddings via a heatsink, enabling the fiber to guide and amplify high-power optical signals at high altitude.
