  • Patent number: 6059697
Abstract: An improved exercise device including two exercise poles, each having an upper segment secured via an articulating joint to the upper body and a lower segment which is slidably connected to the upper segment. The lower segment includes a hand support or hand grip. A vest with an integral harness includes left and right side articulating joints providing a selected amount of friction. Preferably, each joint includes a cylindrical molded hub with two opposed transversely projecting bayonet lugs; the hub is received within a collar affixed at the proximal end of an upper pole segment and having a circular aperture ringed by an inwardly projecting annular flange with two opposed grooves adapted to receive the two hub bayonet lugs. The hub and collar are separable and are joined by aligning the hub bayonet lugs with the collar flange grooves whereupon the hub may be inserted coaxially within the collar, thereby projecting the hub lugs beyond the opposing surface of the inwardly projecting annular flange.

  • Patent number: 6059693
Abstract: A method and apparatus for stretching and exercising the wrist is disclosed. The apparatus includes a securing apparatus for securing the device to the wrist, a cord or strap, a footstep that enables the cord or strap to be secured to the floor, and an adjustment apparatus for adjusting the length of the cord or strap. The cord or strap wraps around the footstep for storage of the apparatus. The cord or strap is between 4 feet and 8 feet long and made of an inelastic material. The footstep may include a traction device for preventing slippage of the foot on the footstep. The method includes the steps of placing the wrist within the securing apparatus, tightening the securing apparatus, adjusting the length of the cord or strap using the adjustment apparatus so the footstep rests on the floor, placing the foot on the footstep to secure the footstep to the floor, and stretching the wrist.

  • Patent number: 6059694
Abstract: An apparatus for exercising a hand of a user allowing a full range of motion of the hand during use. The hand exerciser includes a dorsal wrap releasably secured about a wrist of the user and extending over a back side of the hand. A finger power band releasably engages the dorsal wrap and extends over at least one finger of the hand of the user providing a resistance to movement of the at least one finger. A thumb power band is also releasably engaged with the dorsal wrap and extends along a surface of a thumb of the hand of the user providing a resistance to movement of the thumb. The finger and thumb power bands move independently of each other allowing exercise of any of the entire hand, any individual finger or thumb and any combination thereof. Furthermore, the resistance provided by the finger and thumb power bands is adjustable based upon the strength of the user. Finger and thumb power bands having variable resistance levels may be interchangeably connected to the dorsal wrap as desired.

  • Patent number: 6059735
Abstract: A portable device for extemporaneous analysis of a body fluid in an intracorporeal cavity includes a tube adapted for introduction into the cavity and a rod slidably mounted in the tube. The rod has a gripping end which emerges from one end of the tube, and a second end that has elements for sampling of body fluid. The rod is capable of assuming two relative positions with respect to the tube, one retracted and the other deployed. The second end of the rod has two branches which can be spaced apart angularly, and the free end of each of the branches has elements for sampling of the body fluid. The branches are arranged in relation with the tube in such a way that, in the retracted position, the sampling elements of the two branches are drawn together and remain at a distal end of the tube, and in the deployed position, the branches are spaced apart outside the distal end of the tube.

  • Patent number: 6059699
Abstract: An exercise device for use with a medicine ball utilizing a support frame with a seat thereon. A medicine ball track is mounted to the frame and is pivotal to a user selectable position of a plurality of positions at which one end of the track is higher than the opposed track end. A seated user facing away from the track initially places the medicine ball at the elevated track end upon torso rotation in one direction. The incline of the track causes a rolling movement of the ball to the lower track end for recovery by the user upon the user oppositely rotating the torso in order to reach the ball at the lower track end. Either end of the track may be elevated so as to provide a balanced exercise. The degree of elevation of the upper track end is adjustable which varies the speed of the ball rolling movement and thus the speed at which the user must rotate between the ball placement and recovery positions. A selector plate positions and maintains the track at a desired inclination.

  • Patent number: 6056712
Abstract: A multi-function orthosis for immobilizing the lower leg, heel, ankle and foot of a human patient, which also provides adjustable therapeutic pressure on the foot sole, and which allows for ambulation. An upper, leg unit lined with a pneumatic bladder is adapted to receive the lower leg of the patient and is hingedly attached to a lower, foot base unit which is adapted to receive the foot of the patient. Retractable kickstands attached to the foot base unit extend to prevent outward or inward rolling of the patient's foot, leg and hip, and to also provide protection from the bedding. An extendable foot slide adjusts to support the foot of the patient and to retract when not in use, and an adjustable and retractable toe flap is attached to the foot slide to protect the toes when the patient is immobilized or ambulatory.
