  • Patent number: 4887372
Abstract: Shallow angle furrows between crop beds are reshaped and cleaned in one pass using a tractor-towed implement having angularly even-spaced cutter blades mounted in tiers on drums for rotation about generally vertical axes, perpendicular to the furrow walls on opposing, angularly adjustable decks. The blades of the lower tier are angled to cut into the wall material laterally, parallel to the wall slope, without destroying the root structure of protective sod covering. The cut material is lifted up to the upper tier blades which are offset and lagged so as to eject the cut material up and beyond the furrow wall edges following cutting, in one continuous operation. Plates and pivotal deflectors mounted at the edges of the decks, direct the discharge of cut material. A bell crank and pivotal linkage provides for hydraulically assisted raising and lowering of the apparatus from and into ground contact.

  • Patent number: 4884640
Abstract: A soil cultivating implement comprising a row of power-drivable, soil working members supported by a hollow frame extending substantially horizontally perpendicular to the implement's intended direct of operative travel to provide selectively upwardly or downwardly directed forces upon that row via the hollow frame. A supporting ground roller is connected behind the row, its rotary axis being contained in an imaginary vertical plane. A mobile implement provides mass to exert a downward force on the cultivating implement at a coupling point which, in turn, is translated into an upward force on the frame's forward aspect by way of arms and strong pivots, such arms being turnable about the ground roller's rotary axis. The upwardly directed force assists soil-working members automatically to elevate as needed for riding over rocks or other buried obstacles without significant damage.

  • Patent number: 4883129
Abstract: Ground engaging bits used in abrasive road grading applications utilizing carbide inserts brazed to the leading face of the steel tip are beneficial on motor grader blades. Commercial road grading bit assemblies used consistent thickness, rectangular carbide inserts brazed to the leading edge of the steel tip. Due to wear and high residual stresses imparted upon the insert from the brazing operation, premature cracking and breaking of the carbide inserts occur. The subject bit arrangement utilizes a carbide insert with a flat rectangular cutting face of non-constant thickness brazed to a leading edge of a steel body. The carbide insert has a thickness that increases from the top of the carbide insert and reaches a maximum at the bottom of the steel body, where bit wear is the greatest. The increasing thickness of the carbide tip extends bit life over the current rectangular design and allows for a more efficient and economical use of the carbide.
