  • Patent number: 4616738
Abstract: A damped boring bar assembly for damping the vibrations encountered during the high-speed boring of titanium, zirconium, and their alloys and the like, as well as steel and other metals, especially when the overhang, or ratio of the diameter to depth of the bored hole, is very small. The boring bar assembly has a weighted damper body contained within a hollow elongated case, the tool-holding end of which is closed and incorporates a shaped inner face with a frictional sliding surface. The damper body also has a frictionally slidable element which, with the damper body, holds a resilient element in compression in an internal cavity. The frictionally slidable element has a shaped face having a frictional surface thereon which engages the frictional surface of the inner face of the elongated case during vibration. The damping mechanism can be adjusted to handle different machining conditions.

  • Patent number: 4615415
Abstract: A hand operated hydraulic bicycle brake includes a brake pad holding unit which is actuated by a rolling diaphragm. A flexible fluid line couples a master cylinder located on the handlebars of the bicycle to the rolling diaphragm which controls a slave cylinder located adjacent to the rim of the front wheel of the bicycle. Actuation of the slave cylinder forces the brake pad into contact with the rim, and further actuation of the master cylinder causes the unit to pivot to bring a second brake pad into contact with the wheel rim.

  • Patent number: 4615512
Abstract: A vehicle suspension strut in which an internal elastomer sleeve is used as an air/oil separator bladder. Air pressure introduced to the chamber formed by the sleeve will expand the sleeve creating a pressure in the hydraulic fluid which acts on the area differential of the piston to create an adjustable lifting force for vehicle height control. Also as the strut works going into jounce, shock absorber oil displaced by the rod is taken up by the air volume trapped inside of the air sleeve. A main suspension spring is mounted to and around the reservoir tube of the strut which may be steerable.

  • Patent number: 4613015
Abstract: One pair of emergency drag brake units are at each end of a vehicle. Each unit comprises a leg member with a serrate-toothed, ground-engageable foot telescopically movable in a support member carried by the frame. An elastic member is shown in one embodiment urging the leg downwardly to maintain pressure on the ground. Hydraulic jacks move the feet to braking positions engaging the ground while the axes of the leg members at each end of the vehicle are inclined toward the other end of the vehicle at an acute angle of 15.degree. or more relative to the vertical, thereby automatically enabling the so-inclined legs at the trailing end of a skidding vehicle to exert a greater frictional drag than the oppositely inclined legs at the leading end regardless of the vehicle's forwardly or rearwardly skidding orientation, and stopping it in a straight line. In one embodiment, the jacks swing the support members about pivots.

  • Patent number: 4611690
Abstract: A bicycle wheel rim brake having an actuating element which can be rotated against spring force is actuated via of a traction cable in such a way that a sliding member supporting a brake lining is displaced in a straight line at right angles to the rim. The axis of rotation of the actuating element coincides with the axis of displacement of the sliding member or lies parallel thereto. A control surface which is inclined relative to this axis of rotation is connected to the sliding member. The sliding member, the brake lining, and the actuating element are supported by a bearing housing which is retained by a bayonet catch in a recess in the wheel fork in such a way that the maintaining of the rim brake is extremely simple.

  • Patent number: 4609082
Abstract: In a double-tube vibration damper the cylinder engages by a terminal edge thereof an engagement face of a piston rod guiding and sealing unit. When the piston rod moves in the outward direction with respect to the cylinder, a high pressure occurs in the working chamber adjacent the piston rod guiding and sealing unit. Due to this high pressure damping liquid jets may escape between the terminal edge of the cylinder and the engagement face of the piston rod guiding and sealing unit. These liquid jets may cause foaming within the annular space defined between the cylinder and a container surrounding the cylinder. In view of avoiding such foaming, an annular cover member is provided between the cylinder and the container, which annular cover member prevents the direct entrance of liquid jets into the annular space between the cylinder and the container.

  • Patent number: 4609076
Abstract: A disc brake unit comprises a disc assembly of interleaved rotor discs and stator discs that are normally spring in one direction biased to a brake engaged condition. A hydraulically operated first piston engages a stator disc at one end of the unit to move it axially in opposition to the spring bias to release the pressure between the discs and thus release the brake. A non-rotatable stop adapted to contact only one intermediate stator disc is provided to prevent movement of the intermediate disc in a direction opposite to the one direction. A second piston engages a stator disc at the opposite end of the unit for moving the rotor and stator discs on one side of a stop into engagement with each other and applies a modulated force to said rotor and stator discs while the first power piston is in position to oppose the spring bias, to thereby apply slip braking torque to the output shaft.

  • Patent number: 4603763
Abstract: This invention relates to a drum brake with two internal expanding brake shoes pivoted at substantially diametrically opposite axes. It incorporates the negative feedback of the brake shoe sliding friction forces to oppose the applied hydraulic brake actuating forces for the purpose of reducing variation in brake torque due to random or uncontrolled variations in the coefficient of friction between brake shoes and brake drum. The required brake shoe friction force feedback is accomplished by eliminating the normally leading brake shoe with its undesirable lock-up prone positive feedback and replacing it with a brake shoe pivoted about an axis diametrically opposite the pivot axis of the normally trailing brake shoe. The location of the shoe pivots is chosen to establish the required feedback magnitude by use of lever ratios whose adequacy is verified by the force equilibrium equations of the brake system.

  • Patent number: 4596314
Abstract: A descender for use when sliding down a rope during an abseil, the descender including a self acting brake mechanism, which will slow the rate of decent unless the brake is held in the release position. The descender has a fixed braking surface and a pair of sheaves mounted on a support member which is pivotable about an axis passing through a lower one of the sheaves such that a rope passing around the lower sheave, between the two sheaves, around the upper sheave and finally between the upper sheave and the braking surface, will cause the pivotable member to be pivoted to press the rope between the upper sheave and the braking surface when a tension is applied to the upper end of the rope. The descender is also provided with a handle to reduce the braking force by pivoting the upper sheave away from the braking surface and a retaining plate pivotable between a position in which a rope is retained in the descender and a position in which the rope is able to be inserted into and removed from the descender.

  • Patent number: 4594780
Abstract: The invention is directed to a braking arrangement for a chain saw having a housing and a guide bar mounted on the housing for accommodating a saw chain thereon. The brake arrangement includes a brake drum operatively connected to the saw chain with a brake band disposed in surrounding relationship thereto. A brake member is connected to the brake band and moves between a ready position whereat the brake band is disposed in spaced relationship to the brake drum and a released position whereat the brake band is drawn tightly around the brake drum. A brake spring resiliently biases the brake member to cause the brake member to pull the brake band tightly about the brake drum when in the released position. A latch arrangement holds the brake member in the ready position against the force of the brake spring. A cam connected to the drive motor rotates through a predetermined path.
