  • Patent number: 6039628
Abstract: A self-mobile cat toy capable of simulating intermittent life includes a rodent-like shell partially or wholly containing an electrical power source mechanically and electrically connected to motor-powered wheels or a tread mechanism for moving along the ground. The power circuit includes an orientation-dependent switch which is closed or open depending on its orientation, so that when played with by a cat, the toy will cease to move in certain orientations and begin to move when pawed into other orientations. In another embodiment the powered wheels or tread are replaced by a vibrating mechanism. In yet other embodiments the cat toy is externally controlled by the pet owner, through either a long cable with a switch at the end or through a radio or ultrasonic transmitter-receiver system.

  • Patent number: 6039627
Abstract: A game call having a reed disposed inside of a longitudinal tube wherein the reed is manipulatable by a caller's finger. The caller's finger is in one embodiment depressed through and movable along an opening in the tube. The caller's finger is separated by either an inelastic member disposed on the exterior of the tube or an elastic member disposed within the tube. Or in another embodiment, the reed is encircled by a flexible tube of 360 degrees and the caller's fingers are capable of approaching the reed from any direction. In one embodiment, the caller's fingers are permitted to approach the reed in only a limited fashion through a series of relatively small finger-sized orifices disposed over predetermined points along the reed. In yet another embodiment, the caller's fingers are permitted to actually touch the reed without any flexible tube member or skin disposed between the caller's finger and the reed.

  • Patent number: 6036497
Abstract: The invention is a dynamic model of the DNA molecule. The invention includes a multiplicity of physical representations of the four nucleotides. Each physical representation is comprised of T-shaped members having an elongate body attached to a flexible planar member. The invention also includes a first joint, located at an end of the elongate bodies which physically represent the Adenine base and the Thymine base, for attaching the Adenine base to the Thymine base, wherein the joint is rotatable. The invention further includes a second joint, located at an end of the elongate bodies which physically represent the Guanine base and the Cytosine base, for attaching the Guanine base to the Cytosine base, wherein the joint is rotatable. Lastly, the invention includes a connections between the nucleotides and the flexible planar member. The flexible planar member physically represents the sugar-phosphate structure of the DNA molecule.

  • Patent number: 6036576
Abstract: A light sword toy comprising a tube having a proximal end and a distal end, and a light source located at the proximal end of the tube. The light source directs light into the tube toward the distal end. The tube is made of a translucent material which glows when the light source is activated. A ball is contained within the tube, and is capable of moving between the proximal end and distal end thereof. When the ball is initially at the proximal end, it blocks nearly all of the light from the light source from reaching the distal end. When the ball is subsequently rolled toward the distal end, the illumination appears to travel toward the distal end. A ball retaining mechanism is located at the distal end for holding the ball at the distal end until the end of play. Then the ball is releasable by the user to restore the ball to the proximal end of the tube.

  • Patent number: 6036496
Abstract: An apparatus and method for screening an individual's ability to process acoustic events is provided. The invention provides sequences (or trials) of acoustically processed target and distractor phonemes to a subject for identification. The acoustic processing includes amplitude emphasis of selected frequency envelopes, stretching (in the time domain) of selected portions of phonemes, and phase adjustment of selection portions of phonemes relative to a base frequency. After a number of trials, the method of the present invention develops a profile for an individual that indicates whether the individual's ability to process acoustic events is within a normal range, and if not, what processing can provide the individual with optimal hearing. The individual's profile can then be used by a listening or processing device to particularly emphasize, stretch, or otherwise manipulate an audio stream to provide the individual with an optimal chance of distinguishing between similar acoustic events.
