  • Patent number: 4930404
Abstract: The very high pressure piston pump can compress a conveying agent (20) to a pressure of approximately 22 kbar. The high pressure sealing comprises a pressure-compensated ice sealing, which operates free of leakage and with reduced friction. To reduce the generally very high frictional forces in the ice sealings, a rotation is superimposed on the translation of the piston (10). The entire machine may be regulated by means of a microprocessor, depending upon the operational parameters and the feed efficiency. Its very high pressure seal has a long service life, even under continued operation in very high pressure ranges.

  • Patent number: 4930980
Abstract: A cooled turbine vane in a multistage gas turbine is cooled with a fluid and a major portion of the fluid is dissipated into the gas flow path. A minor portion is supplied to a seal housing and seal for cooling the seal housing and for providing sufficiently cool fluid to the seal. The vane has a hollow airfoil body fixedly attached to the seal housing via an inner shroud and to a blade ring via an outer shroud. An inlet inot the hollow interior of the airfoil body through the outer shroud is in flow communication with a source of coolant fluid. An outlet in the inner shroud is in flow communication with the seal and its housing. Ports in the airfoil body extending from its hollow interior are in flow communication with the gas flow path.

  • Patent number: 4930990
Abstract: A clutch fan has a new and unique blade design that results in quieter and more efficient operation. The blade design involves the leading edge having inner, intermediate, and outer regions such that the intermediate region is of increasing skew in the direction of rotation and the outer region is of decreasing skew. The pitch ratio increases as a function of increasing blade radius. Along the outer region, the blade increases in pitch on a defined curvature as a function of blade radius and angle to form a tip curl.

  • Patent number: 4930979
Abstract: The disclosure illustrates a range improvement feature for a compressor wheel in which a chamber adjacent the inlet is separated from the outer periphery of the impeller wheel vanes by a wall through which communication is established between the chamber and the impeller wheel. Communication is provided by either an annular slot or a series of radial holes. The feature may be used on single stage or multistage compressors. The area of the communication is such that at high rpm, and/or high flow, flow is from the chamber inward and at lower flows the flow is from the impeller wheel outward. This bidirectional flow improves the range over twhich the compressor may operate without encountering surge.

  • Patent number: 4929152
Abstract: When maintaining a flow of a mixture of products consisting of a liquid of low to medium viscosity incorporating solid particles at a certain temperature and for a certain period of time the mixture remains for some time in a vessel of a substantially cylindrical shape. The residence time in the vessel of the solid particles mixed with the liquid is controlled separately from the liquid in that the solid particles are carried through the vessel at a regulable speed, independently of the speed of flow of the liquid through the vessel, with the aid of a rotatable conveyor means which is permeable to liquid but not to the solid particles and whose axis of rotation coincides with the axis of the vessel. The solid particles remain mixed with the liquid. The residence time of the solid particles is regulated such that the core of the solid particles attains the same temeprature as the liquid, without the liquid remaining for too long a time at the desired end temperature.

  • Patent number: 4929033
Abstract: The proportioning valve assembly (40, 140) may be screwed into a complementary-shaped opening in a master cylinder (10). The valve assembly (40, 140) includes a differential area piston (50, 150) biased by a spring (70, 170) toward the outlet (21, 121) which communicates with the rear brakes. The master cylinder (10) includes a pair of passageways (16, 18) which communicate primary fluid pressure and secondary fluid pressure directly to the differential area piston (50, 150) of the proportioning valve assembly (40, 140) to displace the piston (50, 150) to a balanced position. If there is a failure of pressure in the primary brake circuit, the proportioning valve assembly (40, 140) actuates the differential area piston (50, 150) to permit fluid flow to bypass the piston (50, 150) and be communicated directly to the rear brakes of the vehicle.

  • Patent number: 4928973
Abstract: A novel golf playing field and a method of playing a golf-like game incorporate many of the features of standard golf, but do not attempt to simulate a standard round of golf. Rather, the present invention presents a new concept which is different from, while retaining the most enjoyable aspects of the game of golf. The playing field comprises a course with a fairway and a plurality of target greens positioned thereon in a predetermined pattern. At one end of the course is an expanded teeing area providing both practice and playing tees. Positioned on one side of the teeing area is a putting green, and on the other side is a combination sand trap and target green. A special target green is positioned on the fairway a pre-set distance from the teeing area and acts as a pitching green under a specific set of rules. Different color yardage markers are provided on the fairway, the color designating a target based on a player's skill level.

  • Patent number: 4928577
Abstract: It is a question of a piston and cylinder unit comprising a cylinder barrel defining a piston space, a piston able to run axially in said barrel with a support action due to a peripheral bearing surface of the barrel. The piston includes at least one annular running belt which is coaxially arranged thereon along part of the length of the piston. The belt has a surface facing radially outwards which makes contact with the inner bearing surface of the barrel with sliding fit to support the piston, while an inwardly directed surface of the belt bears on an outer peripheral surface of the piston, which is spaced from the bearing surface of the barrel. The belt further has an inwardly directed retainer spur fitting into a groove-like peripheral recess in the piston. The belt is made of a material with resiliently elastic properties and is interrupted at one position on its periphery so that in the fitted condition of the belt there is a closed interruption able to be opened out for fitting purposes.

  • Patent number: 4929150
Abstract: The present invention relates to a flow rate adjustment device which allows for adjustment of air flow through the fan without changing the rpms of the fan blades. In one embodiment, an adjustable plate is located in the center of the impeller and is movable in such a manner that various lengths of the blade edges are blocked from the intake air at the center of the impeller. In another embodiment of the invention, the plate is replaced by an inflatable blocking device which can be inflated to various degrees thereby blocking various lengths of the blade edges. In both embodiments, the blocking of the blade edges results in less intake air being exposed to the blades, and thus less air moves through the fan even though the rpms remain constant.

  • Patent number: 4927326
Abstract: Damping seals, damping bearings and a support sleeve for the ball bearings of a high speed rotor, the ball bearings being a duplex set having the outer races packaged tightly within the sleeve while the sleeve provides a gap with a support member so that the bearings may float with the sleeve. The sleeve has a web extending radially between the pair of outer races and acts in conjunction with one or more springs to apply an axial preload to the outer races. The sleeves have a series of slits which provide the sleeve with a spring-like quality so that the spring acts to center the rotor upon which the bearings are mounted during start up and shut down. A damping seal or a damping bearing may be used in conjunction with the ball bearings and supporting sleeve, the damping seal and damping bearing having rotor portions including rigid outer surfaces mounted within the bore of a stator portion triangular shaped pockets on the surface facing the rotor.
