  • Patent number: 5099809
Abstract: A projection positioned in the center of a concave section of a toroidal combustion chamber is divided into a section with a steep slope extending from the bottom to the head surface and a section with a gentle slope. The head surface is in the form of a flattened conical trapezoid. Because of its shape, the projection makes it possible for the air which is close to the center section to flow close to the surface of a side wall of the concave section. The air which had been at the center section is added to the amount of air supplied for combustion and is mixed with the fuel in the vicinity of the surface of the side wall of the concave section. By setting the angle at which the air flows along the side wall surface (re-entrant angle) in the combustion chamber, the flow of the air close to the side wall surface is made turbulent, which improves the agitation of the fuel.

  • Patent number: 5076231
Abstract: Mechanical emergency override assembly for an electronic throttle valve assembly of the type having a servomotor to control the closure of the throttle valve flap in the range of from 0.degree. to about 4.degree.-15.degree. in accord with predetermined criteria. The mechanical emergency override improvement comprises dual stop assemblies, which in emergency operation are counteractive when disabled to provide a mechanical stop at about a 5.degree. opening and permit a snap linkage between the setting unit and throttle flap arm to be engaged for mechanical (gas pedal) operation throughout the full range of opening. The servo is spring linked to a second throttle flap arm and can disengage this mechanical override. Normal throttle wider opening, and emergency operation at angles from 5.degree. to full open, are controlled by the driver actuating the gas pedal, but the actual valve flap opening angle is microprocessor-controlled via the servo to be less than the pedal angle on a predetermined curve.

  • Patent number: 5074267
Abstract: An engine throttle control system comprises a control unit for controlling the position of a throttle by means of a motor in response to a position transducer actuated by an accelerator pedal. A detector detects when a signal produced by the control system is outside a range of acceptable values and, for instance, shuts down the engine. In one embodiment, the detector detects whether power supplied to the motor is less then a value expected on the basis of the position and speed of movement derived from the output of a throttle position sensor.

  • Patent number: 5070842
Abstract: An apparatus for controlling ignition timing in an internal combustion engine wherein the ignition timing is controlled such that a crank angle at which an increased rate of pressure in a cylinder is maximized coincides with a target value, e.g., an MBT point or the like. The apparatus detects an occurrence of incorrect ignition in response to a signal indicative of pressure in the cylinder and inhibits feedback control from being carried out for the ignition timing when an occurrence of incorrect ignition is detected. The crank angle, at which an increased rate of pressure in the cylinder is maximized, is calculated in response to a signal indicative of pressure in the cylinder, a reference pulse transmitted from a crank angle sensor and a pulse transmitted per 1.degree. of a crank angle of the crankshaft. The target value is set to a value by which a maximum torque is obtainable within a range where no knocking occurs.

  • Patent number: 5069185
Abstract: The electronic control module of the new generation of fuel injected internal combustion engines is adapted to compensate for variations in operating temperature or pressure readings among the cylinders, so that cylinders having a low temperature or pressure reading relative to the others will receive an increased flow of injected fuel, whereas cylinders running at a relatively high temperature and pressure compared to the other cylinders will receive a decreased fuel injection, so that the cooler cylinders run hotter and the hotter cylinders run cooler. The uniformity of power delivery among the cylinders, which is the object of the operating temperature and pressure adjustment, yields a more even delivery of power and a more efficient use of fuel.

  • Patent number: 5067458
Abstract: A fuel combustion system for an Otto-cycle internal combustion engine including a main combustion chamber and an auxiliary combustion chamber. Timing of ignition is effected by opening a control valve device during a latter portion of the compression phase which permits a pressurized combustible mixture to flow from the main combustion chamber and into the auxiliary combustion chamber where the combustible mixture therein is ignited. Hot burning gases emanating from the auxiliary combustion chamber through a suitable directing device provide single or multiple and penetrating sources of ignition for the bulk of the combustible mixture present in the main combustion chamber. This arrangement provides a very reliable and long life ignition system for Otto-cycle engines and is especially advantageous for engines whichburn a relatively lean combustible mixture.
