  • Patent number: 6580242
Abstract: An entrapment detection device of an opening/closing member which efficiently performs an entrapment determination and restrains an entrapment load even when a motor rotational signal is not inputted. The entrapment detection device includes a controller for performing the entrapment detection based on detected motor rotational signal cycle changes outputted from a motor rotation sensor which is synchronized with the movement of a motor for actuating an opening/closing member. The controller stores the cycle changes of a predetermined number of output pulses from the sensor, predetermines a standard cycle time Tb from the stored pulse output, and calculates a cycle coefficient of the entrapment. When the motor rotational speed is reduced, an entrapment detection operation is performed by comparing a value of time from a previous cycle change to a current cycle change multiplied by the calculated cycle coefficient with the standard cycle Tb.

  • Patent number: 6577085
Abstract: A method and apparatus for controlling a brushless motor having a plurality of windings switched through a sequence of steps includes determining a transition time from one step to the next. The transition time is determined by detecting a zero crossing of a back emf in one of the plurality of windings. A delayed time to be added to the transition time is determined wherein the delayed time is selected according to the step in the sequence of steps being executed and is dependent on the duration of one of a preceding interval between zero crossings. A delay time proportional to a duration of a last shortest interval is supplied to follow a longest interval. A delay time proportional to a duration of a last longest interval is supplied to follow a shortest interval and a delay time proportional to a duration of a medium interval is supplied to follow a medium interval. The method may be used, for example, with a star or delta connected motor having any number of windings.

  • Patent number: 6573672
Abstract: The present invention provides apparatus, systems and methods for fail passive servo controllers. In accordance with an exemplary embodiment of the present invention, servo controller is used with an ALS to control an aircraft during landing procedures. In accordance with one aspect of this exemplary embodiment, upon a failure (e.g., of one of the components of ALS) servo controller fails passively rather than actively. In an exemplary embodiment, the fail passive nature of the servo unit is accomplished by providing at least two independent signal and drive current paths for controlling the servo motor. As such, the servo motor will not generate torque unless the two independent signal lanes agree. For example, when a component such as processor, difference amplifier, or PWM fails or otherwise ceases to function properly, servo motor will not runaway, but rather will fail with only minor transient movement, or alternatively, servo unit will lock at its current position.

  • Patent number: 6571910
Abstract: The use of fiber metal or similarly high flow resistance and high acoustic transparency material as a liner for traditional acoustically absorptive media in a dissipative muffler exhibits improved low frequency sound attenuation, reduces backpressure, and eliminates media entrainment or “blow-out” phenomenon which results in longer muffler life. The same class of materials may also be used to fashion an element that provides linear occlusion inside an otherwise line-of-sight type of muffler, where the occluding element provides improved impedance-matching acoustic absorption. Disclosed embodiments providing linear occlusion minimize traditional increases in muffler backpressure by incorporating helical, conical, and annular members in mufflers with round ducts. To maximize attenuation, a muffler according to the invention may feature both a fiber metal fill liner and a fiber metal linear occlusion element.

  • Patent number: 6564901
Abstract: A marine engine muffler is provided having a silencing element with an inclined surface defining an array of elongate slotted apertures generally disposed in circumferential alignment. The slotted apertures are preferably defined by angled sidewalls such that exhaust gas flowing therethrough is forced to travel in a path that forms a reverse angle relative to the overall exhaust flow path thus conducting exhaust gases and entrained water to reverse direction while flowing through the silencing element. The conical silencing element is specifically sized to avoid resonant vibration within the operational RPM range of the engine and is further sized relative to the combined displacement of the engine and/or cylinder bank in fluid communication therewith to avoid resonant vibrations caused by reflected exhaust gas pressure waves generated by the internal combustion engine.

  • Patent number: 6566830
Abstract: Method and system for controlling the start of a permanent magnet machine are provided. The method allows to assign a parameter value indicative of an estimated initial rotor position of the machine. The method further allows to energize the machine with a level of current being sufficiently high to start rotor motion in a desired direction in the event the initial rotor position estimate is sufficiently close to the actual rotor position of the machine. A sensing action allows to sense whether any incremental changes in rotor position occur in response to the energizing action. In the event no changes in rotor position are sensed, the method allows to incrementally adjust the estimated rotor position by a first set of angular values until changes in rotor position are sensed. In the event changes in rotor position are sensed, the method allows to provide a rotor alignment signal as rotor motion continues. The alignment signal allows to align the estimated rotor position relative to the actual rotor position.

  • Patent number: 6566841
Abstract: A system includes a motor mounted within a housing and a compressor pump unit. A single-phase PSC motor includes a switch assembly which selectively connects primary or alternate windings. During normal load operation, when maximum efficiency is desired, the switch is placed in one position, then during high load operation, when maximum torque output is needed at maximum a load point, the switch is placed in the closed position. In effect, the number of main winding turns is decreased and the motor is strengthened. As the auxiliary capacitors are also now connected in parallel, the net effect is an increase in the total auxiliary capacitance, which also serves to strengthen the motor. Another embodiment provides a switch for a three-phase WYE connected motor. In yet another embodiment, a three phase delta connected motor switch is provided.
