  • Patent number: 6254201
Abstract: A status of one or more subsystems positioned on one or more trailers is communicated to a tractor electrically and mechanically connected to the trailer. The status may be automatically supplied by the subsystem or may be requested either by the operator of the tractor/trailer combination or automatically by another subsystem on either the tractor or the trailer. A spread spectrum data communications signal representing the status of a respective subsystem is superposed on the power bus. The status of the respective subsystem can then be determined from the spread spectrum data communications signal. Preferably, the status of the subsystem is indicated to an operator positioned on the tractor. A command for controlling a subsystem on a trailer can also be communicated from the tractor to the trailer over the power bus. A spread spectrum data communications signal representing the command is produced on the power bus, and the subsystem is controlled based on the spread spectrum data communications signal.

  • Patent number: 6254202
Abstract: A vehicle capable of performing automatic driving can be braked with a hydraulic braking pressure produced by a master cylinder having a vacuum booster and a hydraulic braking pressure produced by a hydraulic pressure pump provided to an ABS/B-TCS hydraulic pressure control unit. During normal braking, the vehicle performs braking with the hydraulic braking pressure produced by the master cylinder, by controlling a linear solenoid of the vacuum booster in accordance with a command from an automatic driving electronic control unit. If an insufficient braking force is obtained from the hydraulic braking pressure produced by the master cylinder or a failure occurs in the braking system of the master cylinder, the vehicle performs emergency braking with the hydraulic braking pressure produced by the hydraulic pressure pump of the ABS/B-TCS hydraulic pressure control unit HU.

  • Patent number: 6254072
Abstract: The present invention provides a combination isolator and jounce bumper. The combination isolator and jounce bumper is disposed on a spring seat of a suspension system and includes a locating member in the form of a projection extending therefrom. The projection is inserted into an aperture in the spring seat so that the isolator assumes a preselected orientation relative to the spring seat when positioned thereon. A coil spring is secured to a spring retaining portion of the combination isolator and jounce bumper. An orientation member in the form of a second projection is provided at a pre-selected location on the spring retaining portion. The second projection engages an end of the coil spring so that the coil spring assumes a preselected orientation relative thereto. The jounce bumper portion of the isolator projects upwardly from the spring retaining portion so as to be coaxially aligned with the coil spring.

  • Patent number: 6253885
Abstract: An eddy current brake having an electromagnetic pole and a rotor journalled for rotation in a torque delivery shaft of an automotive vehicle driveline, the rotor being rotatably positioned in close proximity to the stator with an air gap between them. The stator comprises steel pole pieces with hollow cores that establish a magnetic circuit for a magnetic flux field. The pole pieces have machine-wound electrical windings. The windings are fastened with pole caps. The hollow core reduces the weight and material of the stator without significantly adversely affecting the braking capacity of the retarder brake for any given speed of rotation of the rotor and for any given number of ampere-turns for the stator windings. The pole caps reduce the magnetic saturation and increases the overall brake torque output.
