  • Patent number: 4197078
Abstract: Fibreboard panels and the like, useful as drawer fronts, cabinet doors, table tops, furniture parts, moldings, baseboards and the like are formed of compressed fibre panels or strips with an edge treatment forming a contoured or profiled edge surface. The wood fibres on the edge surface are heat seared and die pressed together to form a heat seared sealed surface of skin which does not require subsequent filling and further mechanical surfacing and which is more easily finished by the application of liquid decorating materials, paints, stains, printing inks and various colorants. The cellulosic fibrous blanks are mechanically preshaped to provide a contoured profile edge which is subjected to heat and pressure from a heated die which sears and seals together the fibres forming a skin over the profiled edge surface. The skin formation results in a reduction of time and labor that is required for any final finishing operations and provides a better appearance for the entire surface of the fibreboard piece.

  • Patent number: 4193615
Abstract: By categorizing alternative hair textures and curl configurations in a display having various hair length and corresponding rod diameters displayed therewith, a compact, easily employable rod sector guide is achieved. In the preferred embodiment, the rod selector guide comprises a hand holdable instrument and is in the form of an elongated, substantially flat member with the information displayed on both sides thereof in an easily readable, readily identifiable chart format. Furthermore, the rods are preferably color coded by diameter, and the rod selector guide employs the specific color of each rod which is preferred for each combination of factors.

  • Patent number: 4188177
Abstract: A system and method is provided for forming semiconductor tear-drop shaped bodies having minimal grain boundaries. Semiconductor material is melted in a capillary tube at the top of a tower, and forced under gas pressure through a nozzle. Separate semiconductor bodies are formed. They are passed through a free fall path over which a predetermined temperature gradient controls solidification of the bodies. The resultant bodies are tear-drop semiconductor bodies of near uniform size with minimal grain boundaries.

  • Patent number: 4187991
Abstract: In the case of overloading of a gyratory crusher the manometer 14 detects a mean effective pressure of the hydraulic fluid in the cylinder 7 greater than a first limiting value, which causes the opening of the maximum pressure valve 18. The hydraulic fluid then flows into the hydraulic accumulator 22, previously filled with a gas at a pressure substantially equal to the said first limiting value. When the overloading is terminated, the maximum pressure valve 18 re-closes and the hydraulic fluid returns by the return branch 24 into the pressure chamber of the cylinder 7. In the case of very substantial overloading capable of damaging the apparatus, the manometer 26 causes the opening of the safety valve 29.

  • Patent number: 4186463
Abstract: A nonwoven fabric having alternating stripes of high fiber density and low fiber density is made in such a manner that substantially all of the fibers in the stripes of high fiber density are oriented in substantially one direction, for example the machine direction, while substantially all of the fibers in the adjacent stripes of low fiber density are oriented in a direction substantially normal to that direction. This phenomenon can be produced by passing a fluid-borne stream of discretely separated fibers over a set of finger-like striping bars that are disposed, equidistantly from each other, directly over a moving conveyor screen or by a set of impervious resist areas in the shape of bars, or the like, disposed directly on the moving screen.

  • Patent number: 4184833
Abstract: A knife adjustment system including a normally non-rotatable quill threadably attached to a hub outwardly extending from the face of an extrusion die at a point proximal said face in order to insure that the operating temperatures of such quill and hub at the connection location are generally equal. Adjustment means for threadably rotating the quill with respect to the hub so as to in turn adjust the spacing of cutter knives with regard to the die face in the form of a planetary gear system located at that end of the hub distal from the die face is further included. The knives are fixed to a knife carrier and in turn supported for rotation about the quill.

  • Patent number: 4184829
Abstract: A method and apparatus for reclaiming scrap produced in the manufacture of fabric reinforced thermoplastic resin sheet material so that the scrap may be worked, banded and calendered or extruded to form a finished product. The reclaiming or reworking of the material is made possible by first means for tearing the fabric fibers embedded in the thermoplastic resin into discrete finite lengths, means for mixing the resulting fibers and resin and means for forming the mixture into a new sheet of thermoplastic resin material suitable for many commercial uses. The tearing of the textile fibers embedded in the scrap into minute lengths is accomplished by means for applying shearing force to the opposite surfaces of the segments of scrap, in directions parallel to the surfaces.

  • Patent number: 4183470
Abstract: A water actuated garbage disposer has an impeller chamber with an impeller having a plurality of fin-like projections on its periphery. A water jet at the generally planar faces of each of the projections imparts the driving force to the impeller. An outlet duct is disposed substantially in line with the water jet stream, thereby facilitating the removal of spent water from the impeller chamber. The impeller is coupled to an abrasion disc having a plurality of implanted abrading blades which may be arcuate, radial or chordal. When radial the blades may be centrifugally operated. The impeller is balanced and weighted to obtain a pre-selected moment of inertia and mass in order to optimize the operation of the disposer. The disposer has upper, central and lower separable chambers for ease in maintenance and assembly, the lower chamber containing the impeller. The upper chamber may contain abrading blades secured to interior walls.

  • Patent number: 4183554
Abstract: A semi-laminated security pouch for a tamper proof identification card is disclosed. The identification card to be protected by the security pouch has a glass bead security coating on a front face which provides an indication if indicia are tampered with on the face of the card. The pouch comprises front and rear film leaves with a heat reactivatable adhesive layer on the rear leaf card-facing surface. The rear surface of the card is centered against the rear leaf for lamination. The front leaf does not have a heat reactivatable adhesive layer thereon since such a layer would destroy the retroreflective visual characteristics of the glass bead security coating. The front leaf card-facing surface does, however, have the bond promoting coating thereon such that when the pouch is assembled, peripheral portions of the front leaf come in contact with peripheral portions of the rear leaf extending beyond the card edges.

  • Patent number: 4182604
Abstract: Loose hay or the like is delivered into a progressively narrowing axial space between two rows of identical teeth which project towards each other from side locations on a pair of obliquely related wheels. The hay or other material is simultaneously compressed and advanced by the teeth as they come together. The teeth form axial boundaries for pockets or chambers in which the hay or other material is compressed into blocks. The radial boundaries of such pockets or chambers are formed by an annular outer wall carried by one of the wheels and an annular inner wall carried by the other wheel. One of the wheels is mounted for rotation in a fixed position. The other wheel is mounted for rotation by mounting means which can be shifted in position for the purpose of varying the axial space between the two wheels, for adjustment of the pocket size.

  • Patent number: RE30225
Abstract: Method and apparatus are disclosed for cyclically metering charges of a granulated wax-like or resinous material from a bulk supply and feeding such metered charges into a heated, pressurized reservoir. Each charge of the granulated material is fluidized with a stream of air under pressure to insure flow of the granules. The stream of air also serves to pressurize the reservoir and prevent the escape of hot air therefrom. Cooling of the reservoir inlet to prevent agglutination of the granules also is contemplated.
