Abstract: A program controlled customized method for making molds comprises the steps of dispensing a layer of molding material including a mixture of sand and binder over a mold forming pattern by means of relative movement between a dispensing device and the pattern while selectively varying the ratio of sand and binder in the mixture dispensed in predetermined areas of the pattern or in successive layers to provide a mold of the desired strength in certain critical areas while conserving the amount of binder needed for the completed mold.
Abstract: A self adjusting consumable hot top is formed of a pair of bendable shape adjusting sections of a combustible consumable material capable of being wedged into opposed relation in an ingot mold so that the hot top conforms with the shape of the cavity in the ingot mold and when ignited by molten metal poured therein adds heat to the molten metal to maintain a pool of molten metal for filling pipes and cracks in the cooling ingot.
Abstract: Utilization of production equipment with diverse throughput rates is optimized by a central random access article storage apparatus disposed centrally of peripherally positioned production equipment. Computer controls enable fully automatic sequencing of production flow. The storage apparatus provide transient storage and article queuing during intermediate successive production steps. The computer control enables automatic article tracking for quality control as well as diagnosis of automatic production equipment problems.

Abstract: A strategically located series of spaced apart classifiers set at varying depths within a pelletizer pan operated to classify the forming pellets and also impart controlled energy into the forming pellets producing pellets of improved quality. Controlled classifying of the forming pellets stabilizes pellet output. With a stabilized pellet output obtained the need for driving the pellet pan with a variable speed device can be eliminated since pan rotation can be maintained at a constant speed.
Abstract: A multi-sectional filter tip assembly is initially made with two charcoal filter sections and alternate sections of cellulose acetate fibrous material with a fibrous section at each end. The filter tip assembly is then compacted by a pin compactor which punches a recess into each fibrous end of the filter tip assembly while at the same time forcing the displaced acetate fibrous material into the charcoal sections to compact the charcoal. Upon removal of the pins of the pin compactor, a recess is formed in each end of the filter tip assembly.
Abstract: The present invention relates to an apparatus for corrugating a web of sheet material in a continuous process by means of an elongated mold movable in an endless closed path and composed of plate elements disposed in a row the one behind the other and in one straight portion together constituting a forming table having preferably diagonally extending, mutually parallel, grooves.The plate elements are by means of journals supported on and mounted in driving members disposed on either side of the path and equipped with turning wheels, the individual plate elements following the driving members with the same side facing upwards during the whole trave along the closed path.The primary field of application of the product manufactured in the apparatus are corrugated sheet pieces intended to form the fill in contact or exchanger bodies for two fluids, of which one may be a liquid, such as water, and the other a gas, such as air.
Abstract: A tool carrier mechanism for injection molding machines for securing a tool part to a tool carrier, comprises a guide bolt having means for connecting it to the tool part so that it projects outwardly from the rear of the tool part. A tool carrier has a bore therethrough for receiving the guide bolt and has a front face against which the rear of the tool part is engageable and has an opposite rear face beyond which said guide bolt projects. A slide mounted on the tool carrier adjacent the rear face of the tool carrier is movable toward and away from the guide bolt for engagement and disengagement therefrom. Wedge surfaces are defined between the guide bolt and said slide effecting an inward movement of the guide bolt with the tool part to exert an inward pressure engagement of the tool part with the tool carrier.
Abstract: A ladle gate for use with casting apparatus including a mold of the kind used in casting battery plate grids and including a ladle of the type used in holding a supply of molten lead alloy and being pivotable into a pouring position wherein a quantity of the molten lead alloy can be poured into the mold. The ladle gate is positioned adjacent the ladle spouts and functions to permit flow of molten lead alloy through the ladle spouts when the ladle is in a pour position, and to interrupt the flow of molten lead alloy through the spouts at the completion of the pour, when the ladle pivots to its rest position, to thereby prevent the formation of solidified drippage at the spouts.

Abstract: A high melting temperature metal, casting mold is made of sheet metal embedded in a supporting mass of refractory particles preventing deformation of the sheet metal under the weight of the cast metal and conducting heat from the sheet metal at a rate preventing complete melting of the sheet metal.
Abstract: A method and apparatus is disclosed which reduces the complexity of the apparatus needed to accomplish the cross linking reaction in the process of coating a synthetic resin material onto a conducting wire. A rotary orifice is provided just down stream of the extruder and just upstream of the forming die. The rotary orifice imparts a compressive and a shearing stress to the resin to thereby increase the temperature uniformly. The increase in temperature assists in bringing about the cross linking reaction.
Abstract: An improved casting apparatus for directionally solidifying molten metal is disclosed. The apparatus typically includes a furnace for heating a mold containing molten metal, a liquid metal coolant bath positioned below the bottom of the furnace and means for gradually withdrawing the heated mold from the furnace into the coolant bath to effect directional solidification of the molten metal. The apparatus is improved by positioning a heat insulating baffle between the bottom of the furnace and coolant bath, the baffle being constructed to float on the bath surface during the solidification process and minimize heat loss from the mold until it is immersed in the bath. The provision of the floating baffle between the furnace bottom and coolant bath provides several important advantages including increased thermal gradients, shorter casting cycles and improved cast microstructures.
Abstract: A fluff distributor comprises a fluff chamber, two or more vacuum screens in said chamber and onto which screens fluff is laid in batts. The screens have separately controllable drive mechanism whereby each screen can be independently driven at a desired rate of speed. Accordingly, the volume of fluff output from said chamber for each screen is similarly separately controllable. Each screen supplies fluff to one of several converting machines. The converting machines can operate at different rates of speed requiring different volumes of fluff and by reason of the separate control for each distributor screen, the same fluff distributor can supply fluff to different converting machines operating at different demand levels for fluff.
Abstract: Apparatus for electroslag remelting of at least one consumable electrode in a cooled mold assembly with a cooled bottom plate having mechanism accomplishing relative movement between at least a part of the mold assembly and the ingot being formed during forming of the ingot. Movement of selective parts of the mold assembly relative to the ingots and/or the electrode is provided with or without movement of the electrode itself. Structure for bottom pouring of molten slag is provided. A specified mold assembly has, as an element, a cooled core device enabling making hollow ingots, in which case the hollow core device can be moved axially, reciprocated axially and reciprocally rotated during forming of the ingot. Electrical power for the electroslag remelting can be connected between the consumable electrode and any or all elements of the mold assembly.

Abstract: A machine for the production of articles of foamed plastics material in a two-stage process has a first work station for a hot preforming stage and a second work station for a following cold forming stage. Each station has a two-part mould, the second mould part of each mould being movable towards and away from its first mould part by means of a fluid cylinder, and the first mould parts are connected together and mounted so as to be movable in unison in a direction at right angles to the direction of movement of the second mould parts.
Abstract: In an extrusion system wherein a single source of molten extrudable material is utilized to provide feed to a plurality of extrusion lines, the rate of flow of extrudable material from the source thereof to the plurality of extrusion lines is controlled to provide a preselected total product output rate. The position of a flow control valve means associated with each extrusion line is controlled to maintain a preselected material supply pressure upstream of said plurality of extrusion lines and to provide a preselected relationship among the measured production rates of said plurality of extrusion lines. In a preferred embodiment, an extrusion system having two extrusion lines supplied by a single source of molten extrudable material is controlled to provide a preselected total production rate, a preselected molten material source pressure, and a preselected balance between the extrusion rates of the two extrusion lines.
Abstract: A continuous casting installation has a curved roller apron and a withdrawal and straightening unit. The latter has upper and lower rollers, and the upper rollers are vertically movable so that a gap may be formed between the same and a strand which extends into the withdrawal and straightening unit. A heating device is provided for the strand and may be moved from a position laterally of the withdrawal and straightening unit into the gap between the upper rollers and the strand when the upper rollers are raised. The heating device is preferably arranged in the region of the tangent point. When a strand cools to such an extent that the withdrawal and straightening unit can no longer bend it, as may occur in the event of a breakout, the upper rollers beyond the tangent point are raised. The strand is then driven forward until, by virtue of its curvature, it touches the raised upper rollers.
Abstract: An arrangement for transporting away strand pieces, in particular crop ends cut off in continuous casting plants with a cutting means has a conveying roller path following the cutting device a cut strand discharge apparatus comprised of a plurality of arms pivotable over at least part of their length from a horizontal pick-up position into a tilted dropping position, and a lifting table carrying at least one conveying roller. The lifting table is perpendicularly displaceable relative to the conveying-roller-path plane. An inclined sliding path extending transversely to the strand guide is formed when the lifting table has been lowered and the arms are pressed into the tilted position by the weight of the cut off strand piece.
Abstract: A press for molding large sheets around a forming surface which includes an elastic press pad, a first frame member on the side of the press pad away from the working surface thereof, the first frame member having a top wall and side walls forming a pressure cell area therebetween, an elastic diaphragm in the pressure cell area in contact with the press pad, a second frame member formed in a generally L-shaped configuration to encompass and hold an annular bead of the elastic diaphragm, a trough-shaped supporting member positioned adjacent the end walls of the first frame member and the press pad such that a gap is formed between the end walls and the supporting member, a movable seal strip positioned in the gap to prevent the press pad from being pressed out of the pressure cell area when the elastic diaphragm is expanded, and a supporting strip attached to the end walls of the first frame member at a point within the pressure cell area to secure the press pad within the pressure cell area.
Abstract: Thin-walled articles of thermoplastic material are formed in a continuous apparatus starting with heating and extruding granular thermoplastic raw material in the form of a continuous web which is immediately stabilized by rapid cooling of its opposite surfaces and the stabilized web wherein the material sandwiched between the precooled outer surface layers remains at or near extrusion temperature is fed into a thermal forming station wherein shaping tools form the articles in the web without the need for further heating of the web. Adjustments are provided for correlating the cooling action to different materials and web feed rates, for varying the web feed rates and increments, and for varying the shaping tool movements to adapt for different materials and sizes of articles. After the formed articles are separated from the web the web residue is fed back to be mixed with incoming raw material at the extrusion station.
