Abstract: A reactor for removing contaminants such as reactive hydrocarbons from the gas being sampled by gas component determination apparatus is disclosed. A confined path is disposed adjacent a high purity quartz lamp capable of generating low order wavelengths. By selecting the flow rate of the sample gas past the quartz lamp in the presence of ozone, all hydrocarbons can be photo-oxidized or all hydrocarbons with the exception of methane. Apparatus is also disclosed employing the reactor wherein the methane content of a sample gas can be determined. The sample gas is alternately measured as to the quantity of all hydrocarbons contained therein and then measured for methane. The difference between the two readings is indicative of the amount of non-methane hydrocarbons present.

Abstract: Phosgene, COCl.sub.2, an impurity in BCl.sub.3 is dissociated by CO.sub.2 ser radiation that is passed through a stainless steel laser cell with NaCl windows on each end of the cell. The power level of a cw CO.sub.2 multiline laser can be varied to accomplish the irradiation to effectively dissociate the COCl.sub.2 into its dissociation products, substantially CO and Cl.sub.2. The BCl.sub.3, .nu..sub.3 (956 cm.sup.-1) fundamental is resonant with CO.sub.2 (P.sub.20) laser line and strongly absorbs this energy which is followed by an intramolecular V--V transfer of energy to the COCl.sub.2 which results in its dissociation. The gaseous compound C.sub.2 H.sub.4 having combination bands and overtones that match reasonably close to the energy levels of COCl.sub.2 can also serve as a diluent for COCl.sub.2 to effect transfer of energy for dissociation of COCl.sub.2 by cw CO.sub.2 laser radiation.

Abstract: A solid electrolyte type air-fuel ratio detector comprising a housing fixed to the exhaust manifold of an engine and a detecting element disposed in the housing. The detecting element has a detecting portion projecting into the exhaust manifold so as to expose the detecting portion to the exhaust gas stream. The detecting portion is covered by a metallic cover for preventing the exhaust gas from directly impinging upon the detecting portion.
Abstract: The end of the useful life of a controlled-release formulation containing a volatile phosphate ester pesticide is signalled visually by change in the color of an indicator matrix positioned relative to the formulation so as to contact a representative proportion of the pesticide vapors as they are emitted from the formulation.
Abstract: An optically-thin preparation of a sample solution and chemical reagents produces a constituent-manifesting reaction product that can be measured in linear relation to the concentration of the constituent of interest. A fibrous sheet contains the sample and the reagents for both the reaction and the measurement. The same site on the fibrous sheet which bears the reacting materials serves as a blank to produce a reference signal for the measurement.
Abstract: A process for automatic titration wherein the dosage of titrant is controlled by a digital computer, the titration being started with at least one dosage of a preselected size, each dosage of titrant thereafter and throughout the total course of the titration being precalculated and controlled on the basis of transducer signal change per added titrant volume unit at the preceding dosages in such a way that the titrant dosages are relatively smallest around the equivalence point.

Abstract: A test device and method are provided for determining the hemoglobin content of blood. The test device comprises a substantially opaque light reflecting matrix having a refractive index significantly different from the refractive index of blood. In use, a test sample of blood is contacted with the matrix of said test device and the light reflectance therefrom is measured as an indication of the quantitative amount of hemoglobin present in said sample.
Abstract: In a biochemical analysis apparatus, two kind of cuvettes are used, one having a single chamber and the other having three chambers joined. These cuvettes are incubated at a predetermined temperature in incubator chambers of the analysis apparatus one after another, and the period of the incubation is determined depending on the above kind of the cuvettes. After the completion of incubation the cuvette is set in a measuring chamber of a photometry section of the analysis apparatus. In the photometry section, two paris of photosensors are provided for detecting the light of various wave length which passes through the measuring chamber, and either one of the two pairs of photosensors is automatically selected according to the kind of the cuvette set in the measuring chamber. Ouput signals from a pair of the photosensors are calculated automatically and the result of the calculation is indicated on an indicator of this apparatus.
Abstract: A method for tracing the flow of a plurality of fluid slugs injected into a subsurface formation using a number of tracers smaller than the number of fluid slugs. Single tracers are used in a number of fluid slugs equal to the number of tracers. In the remaining injected fluid slugs, combinations of at least two of the tracers in predetermined concentration ratios are used. Recovered fluid is analyzed for the presence of each of the tracers and the ratios of the tracers indicates breakthrough of each injected slug.
Abstract: Microanalytical method for the simultaneous determination of the elements, carbon, hydrogen, sulfur, chlorine, bromine, iodine and nitrogen in a single, small sample of an organic material, said method comprising the steps of: (a) substantially instantaneously igniting and rapidly and completely combusting a small sample of limited size in a heated combustion zone in a pressurized atmosphere of substantially pure oxygen; (b) conducting the gaseous mixture of combustion products in excess oxygen through a heated equilibrium zone; (c) conducting the effluent from the equilibrium zone through a gas chromatographic separation zone containing an adsorbent material adapted to separate combustion products of the said elements each from the others; (d) conducting the effluent from the separation zone through detecting means to quantitatively and separately measure the amount of the combustion product of each of the elements; (e) calculating from the amounts of the several combustion products the percentage content of
Abstract: Measured sample quantities of sulfureous matter are introduced into a sealed chamber where the samples are pyrolyzed to form sulfur dioxide and sulfur trioxide gases and to oxidize organic substances to form carbon dioxide gas. The gases are then passed through a free sulfur-absorbing packing and into a scrubbing zone wherein transition metal amine complex is used to remove sulfureous compounds without reaction with the carbon dioxide gas. The scrubbed gases are then analyzed to determine the carbon dioxide content thereof.
Abstract: A monitor for fluids comprising a pump adapted to convey a fluid sample from the exterior of the monitor into contact with a portion of an indicator tape, a transport mechanism for advancement of the tape to expose a fresh portion of the tape to the fluid sample, and a single electric motor adapted to drive both the pump and the tape-transport mechanism.
Abstract: Analytical element for the detection of an agent under analysis, termed analyte, dissolved in an aqueous, proteinaceous liquid. The element has at least two superposed layers, the layers including a spreading layer and a reagent layer. The element can include a support material which is preferably radiation transmissive. To normalize transport of the analyte in and through the spreading layer, the spreading layer contains an effective amount of a surfactant, such as a non-ionic surfactant. Preferably, the amount of surfactant is between about 1% and about 15% by weight of solid contents in the spreading layer.

Abstract: An individual blows into a chamber having a predetermined volume. In the chamber is mounted a gas cell including a heating conductor for catalytic burning of the alcohol and a probe at a predetermined distance from the heating conductor, both embedded in a ceramic porous shell. The lead-in conductor for the probe is connected to the base of a transistor in a threshold circuit which is responsive to the resistance of the gas cell which in turn decreases with increasing alcohol content. When the resistance is less than a predetermined resistance a relay in the transistor circuit operates, lighting an indicator lamp and, in one embodiment, deenergizing the ignition circuit of a vehicle in which the device is mounted.

Abstract: A test device for determining the presence of a constituent in a sample, and a method for making it are disclosed. The test device comprises reactants (e.g. reagents, enzymes, etc.) incorporated with a carrier matrix such that when the device is wetted with a test sample, the reactants and the constituent react to produce a detectable response. The reactants are positioned separately from each other on the matrix in substantially, discrete, non-contacting areas. Hence, reactants are maintained substantially separate from each other until the test device is wetted with the sample.
