  • Patent number: 7075750
Abstract: An apparatus for patterning a self-aligned coil using a damascene process is disclosed. Coil pockets are formed in a first insulation layer disposed over a first pole layer. A barrier/seed layer is deposited along walls of the coil pockets in the insulation layer. Copper is formed in the coil pockets and over the insulation layer. The copper is planarized down to the insulation layer. The self-aligned coil process packs more copper into the same coil pocket and relaxes the coil alignment tolerance. Protrusions are prevented because of the more efficient and uniform spacing of the coil to reduce heat buildup in the head during a write.

  • Patent number: 7038883
Abstract: A magnetic head slider mounted on a magnetic disk unit for supporting a magnetic head that writes and reads information to and from a magnetic disk is constructed such that a depth ?s1 from the surfaces of leading and trailing pads, which come into contact with a medium surface when the disk is at rest, to stepped surfaces formed on the air inflow side of the leading pads, a depth ?s2 from the contact surfaces to stepped surfaces formed on the air inflow side of the trailing pad and a step depth ?s3 from the contact surfaces to the surfaces of side rails are in a relation of ?s1??s2??s3. With this arrangement, the slider can follow the waved medium surface at a low flying height with a small flying height fluctuation, thus realizing high density recording, high reliability and reduced cost of the magnetic disk unit.

  • Patent number: 7031108
Abstract: A magnetic head is composed to diminish disordered writing bits of a recording layer or reading noise caused by a magnetic field generated from an under layer without decreasing a writing magnetic field strength of the magnetic head. The magnetic head includes a write head provided with a main pole and one or more auxiliary poles, a read head provided with a read element, and coils located on both sides of the main pole in a manner to sandwich the main pole. The coil located on one side generates the asymmetrical magneto-motive force for magnetizing the main pole to that generated by the coil located on the other side.

  • Patent number: 7031107
Abstract: A magnetic head parking system of a hard disk drive to move a magnetic head mounted on a slider of an actuator from a data zone of a disk and to place the magnetic head in a parking zone thereof when the disk stops rotating. The magnetic head parking system includes a head limiter provided on an upper surface of a flange of a spindle motor to protrude toward the disk and restricting a range of movement in upward and downward directions of the magnetic head placed in the parking zone of the disk. The head limiter is provided at a position opposite to a position where the slider of the actuator is installed or at a position deviating from and/or adjacent to a position directly under the slider. Thus, when an external impact is applied and an operation of the hard disk drive is stopped, the range of the up and down movement of the magnetic head is limited by the head limiter, so that the possibility of the damage to the magnetic head due to the head slap can be lowered.

  • Patent number: 7023660
Abstract: The magnetic head is formed with a narrow pole tip, and a pole tip heating element is fabricated to reduce the pole tip stress and increase its permeability, such that the magnetization switching speed of the pole tip is increased. The heating element is preferably electrically interconnected within the induction coil circuit of the magnetic head, such that the electrical current flowing through the induction coil also flows through the heating element. In a preferred embodiment, the heating element is fabricated above the second magnetic pole. The heating element is preferably formed with a resistance of approximately 0.2 to 1.0 ohms, such that the approximately 40 mA current that flows through the induction coil and the heating element creates a heating energy of the heating element of approximately 0.3 to 1.6 mW. The heating element can be comprised of a variety of materials such as Cu, W, NiFe, NiCr and IrRh.

  • Patent number: 7019941
Abstract: A filtering apparatus of a hard disk drive includes a filter filtering particles from air flowing inside a housing which includes a base plate and a cover plate, and two holders installed inside the housing and having support grooves supporting both end portions of the filter. The filter includes a filtering portion through which the flowing air passes and particles are filtered from the flowing air, and an insertion portion included at both end portions of the filtering portion and inserted into the support grooves forming a seal. Thus, since no gap is generated between the support groove of the holder and the insertion portion of the filter, all the air flowing toward the filter passes through the filtering portion. Also, the flow of air passing through the filtering portion is smooth, so that an efficiency of filtering tiny particles included in the air flowing in the hard disk drive is improved.
