  • Patent number: 4288081
Abstract: The invention provides a novel gasket for electric shielding composed of an electrically insulating rubbery elastic material as the continuum or matrix and a conductive phase dispersed therein. Different from conventional gaskets for electric shielding in which conductive filaments or particles form the dispersed phase, the inventive gasket for electric shielding comprises flakes of a conductive material as the dispersed phase in the matrix and the flakes are in orientation in such a manner that the flat surfaces of them lie substantially perpendicularly to the contacting surfaces of the gasket. Owing to this unique internal structure, the inventive gasket for electric shielding is very efficient in absorbing the energy of the electric fields or electromagnetic waves.

  • Patent number: 4288083
Abstract: A hydrodynamic shaft seal for use under both static and dynamic conditions features a sealing face having one static sealing surface at the non-liquid side of the seal and a dynamic sealing surface having a plurality of angular vanes forming chambers open to the liquid at the liquid side of the seal. An annular coil spring biases the static sealing surface into contact with the shaft under static conditions and controls its spacing under dynamic conditions during which the vanes propel liquid toward the liquid side of the seal.

  • Patent number: 4286793
Abstract: A ring is telescoped into the end of a nut of a ball screw and nut assembly and carries a lip which breaks ice away from the screw. The plastic insert of relatively short circumferential length is supported by the ring and is urged into the groove of the screw by a spring so as to wipe mud from the screw. A felt strip coacts with the insert to seal the nut against the entry of foreign particles and to restrict the escape of lubricant from the nut.

  • Patent number: 4283062
Abstract: A stuffing box as applied to the sliding joint between the piston (ram) and cylinder of a hydraulic ram assembly in a hydraulic injection molding machine has a packing retainer assembly with a retainer ring with a protruding gland that extends into the stuffing box thereby to act as a pilot means to insure concentricity between the stuffing box, gland, and ram. In addition, the inside diameter of the gland has a support bushing groove in which is mounted a support bushing that has an inside diameter less than the inside diameter of the gland and which is fitted in sliding bearing relationship to the outside diameter of the ram and held there by the gland. The support bushing is preferably manufactured in two pieces from a fiber reinforced low friction resin selected from the class consisting of thermosetting resin and thermoplastic resin more preferably phenol formaldehyde and polytetrafluoroethylene.

  • Patent number: 4281841
Abstract: An all metal reusable O-ring sealing arrangement for sealing two concentric tubes in an ultra-high vacuum system. An O-ring of a heat recoverable alloy such as Nitinol is concentrically positioned between protruding sealing rings of the concentric tubes. The O-ring is installed between the tubes while in a stressed martensitic state and is made to undergo a thermally induced transformation to an austenitic state. During the transformation the O-ring expands outwardly and contracts inwardly toward a previously sized austenitic configuration, thereby sealing against the protruding sealing rings of the concentric tubes.

  • Patent number: 4280706
Abstract: A seal is provided between an outlet mounting flange and a hopper mounting flange. The seal extends in-board of the inner hopper wall and includes a projection extending upwardly which engages the hopper wall. The seal further includes a tapered portion which extends inwardly and downwardly from the projection. Thus lading and pressure in the outlet act to urge the projection into engagement with the vertical wall and the tapered portion into engagement with its supporting surface. In one embodiment a void space is located below the projection which is compressed in assembly to create a tight fit of the seal against the hopper wall. In another embodiment an outer flange portion is provided which extends around the inner end of the hopper mounting flange to aid in positioning the seal for assembly.

  • Patent number: 4278260
Abstract: A seal unit for providing a fluid seal between a shaft and a housing. THe seal unit includes a seal element screw threadedly received within an annular casing. The seal is made of a rigid but resilient material so that on rotation of the seal element within the casing the seal element is caused to deflect to bring it into sealing engagement with the shaft. Such an arrangement makes it possible to use a seal element having an internal diameter larger than the shaft to be sealed so that the seal element may be slid over the shaft without causing damage to the sealing surface of the seal element.

  • Patent number: 4277047
Abstract: A metallic sealing device for a valve including a fluid passage therein and an inner valve positioned in said fluid passage, which comprises an annular groove having nearly T-shape in section formed around the fluid passage by the valve body and a metallic seat holder fixed thereto and a metallic seat arranged in said annular groove and partially projecting into the fluid passage. The metallic seat consists of a metallic sheet having shoulders formed at the sides to limit the projection of the seat into the fluid passage and an extension of one of said sides extending, in the nearly T-shaped groove at the part opposite to the fluid passage toward the other of said sides, thereby promoting the fluid sealing property as well as elastic property of the metallic seat itself and nullifying the dependency of the sealing property on the fluid flowing direction to utilize the function of the fluid pressure at the time of shutting off the fluid passing through the fluid passage.

  • Patent number: 4277072
Abstract: A seal to prevent the escape of a liquid and gas mixture from the gap between a rotating shaft and the bore of a housing, which includes an inner ring secured to the shaft and an outer ring secured to the outer wall of the housing bore. A flange-like member is secured to the inner ring and employed to seal the gap between the inner ring and outer ring. The flange includes liquid and gas inlets, an internal network of voids and liquid and gas outlets. The internal void network of the flange member is adapted so that during the rotation of the flange member, gas and liquid oil is suctioned into the flange through the liquid and gas inlets, and are segregated by the rotary motion of the void network of the flange into a predominantly gaseous stream and a predominantly liquid stream.
