  • Patent number: 6047702
Abstract: A fingernail file has a cylindrical dowel and a filing implement on each end. The filing implements may be shaped in many different configurations including parabolic, conical or oval, but are symmetrical. Each filing implement has inner and outer layers which are bonded to the dowel. The outer layer is a thin sheet of abrasive, emery paper or fine sand paper. The inner layer is a thicker cushion or padding. The file is designed to reduce or remove the growth ridge which develops at the interface on the underside of the fingernail between the end of a natural fingernail and an artificial fingernail. The user holds the dowel and places one of the implements in contact with the subject fingernail. By manually twirling or rotating the dowel about its axis, the nail interface is gently but firmly abraded.

  • Patent number: 6035866
Abstract: A pomade stick applicator having a swiveling pomade advancing and retracting mechanism has a two-part base-cap container and virtually air-tight sealing features. These include an interfering snap fit between the container base and the longitudinally slotted inner body, and a resiliently deformable annular seal between the lower end of the helical internal cam and the inner body. This annular seal is urged into telescoping deformed sealed engagement by the container cap applied by the user. The interior of the cap seals the upper end of the shell fixed to the cam, and also provides an inner skirt interferingly telescoped with the upper end of the inner body, prevening swiveling. These seals enclose the pomade stick, blocking the escape of volatiles.

  • Patent number: 6035860
Abstract: A system for applying artwork to fingernails has a computer controller, a hand mold to securely hold the user's fingernails, a device for determining the size and location of the fingernails, and an applicator for applying the artwork. A method for applying artwork to fingernails provides color and/or design choices selected from a computer media catalogue of colors and designs. A user views these choices on a video monitor, which also displays messages to guide the user through the application process. Prior to application of the artwork, the fingernails are coated with a light reactive base coat. The user's hands are inserted into a hand mold in which a height sensor and height gauge aid in positioning the fingernails at a preferred height position. The hand mold is retracted into a main system module in which an optical sensor detects the light reactive base coating for determining the size, peripheral shape, and location of the fingernails.

  • Patent number: 6035864
Abstract: A method and apparatus for ornamenting ornament stringing material such as hair is disclosed. In accordance with one embodiment, the apparatus comprises a tool having first and second legs. The legs are connected at a proximal end of the tool. A stop is associated with each leg at a distal end of the tool. In accordance with a method, an ornament is passed over the proximal end of the tool and along the legs towards the stops. Ornament stringing material is extended between the first and second legs between their connection at the proximal end of the tool and the ornament. The ornament is then moved upwardly along the legs of the tool and onto the ornament stringing material. The ornament stringing material is then removed from between the legs of the tool, leaving the ornament positioned on the ornament stringing material.

  • Patent number: 6026821
Abstract: Hair dryer with remote sensing of the moistness of the hair by means of a detector which compares the amount of radiant energy in two absorption bands in the spectrum of light emitted by an infra red source and reflected by the hair. One of the absorption bands is caused by water in the hair. The amount of radiant energy in this absorption band changes significantly during the drying of the hair. The other absorption band is caused by keratin in the hair. The energy in this band changes to a much smaller extent during the drying of the hair. The intensity ratio of the two bands is an indicator for the moistness of the hair and can be employed to control the temperature and/or the air flow of the hair dryer.
