  • Patent number: 5868034
Abstract: In the present invention, a single cylinder or solenoid, ratchet-action, three speed actuator is used on an in-line shifter which actuator can be controlled by a button, single rpm switch, timer or a multiple number of rpm switches, or timers with a special controller. In-line shifters can control forward or reverse pattern transmissions. The pattern for a three-speed forward shifting transmission is first gear, second gear, third gear, neutral, reverse, and park. The pattern for a three-speed reverse shifting transmission is third gear, second gear, first gear, neutral, reverse, and park. A shifter for a forward pattern transmission must be pushed or pulled in a forward direction to shift to the next higher gear, and a shifter for a reverse pattern transmission must be pushed or pulled in a rearward direction to shift to the next higher gear. The handle of an in-line shifter travels in an arc through these patterns.

  • Patent number: 5711192
Abstract: An improved indexing device for generating a smooth and controlled rotary motion where double rotary cranks having slide members coupled to corresponding slide guides arranged in orientation parallel to the plane of rotation of the rotary cranks are provided. Each slide guide is attached to a trolley movable in a direction transverse to the axis of the slide guides. A linear gear rack is mounted on each trolley in parallel to its sliding motion and are opposingly configured across a rotary gear member. The gear member drives a positive locking clutch which is entirely self contained within the indexer assembly itself and requires no operator or external control. The clutch function is accomplished automatically when appropriate during the indexer cycle. During stationary periods, the output of the indexer is locked preventing movement of the indexer and providing unique stability to the device.

  • Patent number: 5598739
Abstract: A linear motion drive apparatus uses a friction drive wheel to drive a carriage along two rails. The drive shaft of the friction wheel is supported by the carriage, and has a rotor of a pancake motor and an inertia wheel non-rotatably attached thereto. The stator is fixed to a wall of the carriage. The carriage is supported by recirculating ball bearings which are arranged with permanent magnets to urge the friction wheel into engagement with the flat rail. A slip detection and correction system has first encoder mounted on the drive shaft to produce a signal representing the rotational position of the shaft, and a second encoder mounted on the carriage to produce a signal representing the position of the carriage with respect to the rails. The motor is responsive to the signals to compensate for detected slippage.

  • Patent number: 5267913
Abstract: An automatic transmission for an automotive vehicle includes first and second simple planetary gear units, certain of whose elements are continually interconnected and certain others are releasably connected through operation of friction elements and one-way couplings. The input shaft of the transmission is adapted to drive elements of the planetary gear units through an underdrive gearset and an overdrive gearset. The various speed ratios result by either underdriving or overdriving an element of the planetary gear unit or both underdriving one element and overdriving another element. Several parallel torque delivery paths include a series arrangement of the overrunning coupling in parallel with a friction element. This arrangement permits engine braking during coast conditions when the coupling overruns. The overdrive gearset is available to produce a speed ratio without involving the planetary gear units.

  • Patent number: 5004088
Abstract: A rotary coupling device has a hub driving a hub flange formed with windows containing helical compression springs. Those springs are also contained in windows in disc-like side plates rivetted together to form a carrier for friction material. The springs are also contained in windows respectively in floating disc-like plates. The windows are so dimensioned that an initial relative rotation between the friction material carrier and the hub and hub flange, causes one of the springs to be compressed and urge the floating plates to rotate relatively to the carrier or to the hub and hub flange so that the relative movement between the floating plates and the carrier or the hub and hub flange compreses the other of the springs. Thus during this initial movement the springs are compressed in series.

  • Patent number: 4790418
Abstract: A method for controlling the transfer of load from one friction element to another friction element while making a gear ratio change in an automatic transmission. The synchronous engine speed is increased by slipping the offgoing clutch. A constant is calculated from known speed ratios of the gear set, engine inertia, the difference in engine speed from synchronous speed and a constant that corresponds to the output torque at the end of the torque phase of the gear ratio shift. The time rate of change of the offgoing clutch torque is calculated and the clutch pressures are changed in accordance with the calculated torque slope.
