  • Patent number: 5620384
Abstract: A front derailleur for a bicycle has a four-point link mechanism, and a control cable is attached by a screw to an end of a connecting arm fixed to one link of the four-point link mechanism. The connecting arm has an auxiliary projection. The control cable applies a torque to the link at a point of contact between the control cable and the auxiliary projection. The screw on the connecting arm is spaced from a chain guide which contacts a chain, to facilitate an operation to attach the control cable to the connecting arm.

  • Patent number: 5620383
Abstract: A bicycle derailleur gear shifting system having a rotatable handgrip actuator coupled with a derailleur shifting mechanism through a control cable system so as to control the derailleur. The derailleur (50) includes an arcuate cable entraining surface (78) which substantially reduces the variation and magnitude of the actuation ratio between control cable linear displacement and movement of the derailleur p-knuckle (88). A b-knuckle flange (160) militates against the derailment of the drive chain from the upper guide wheel while permitting maximum lateral flexing of the drive chain (48) during shifting between sprockets (46) on the freewheel. A rigid arcuate surface (174) may be provided as an extension of the b-knuckle (170) in replacement of a segment of a Bowden cable housing (38) to obviate the accumulation of water and foreign matter.

  • Patent number: 5620385
Abstract: A tensioner for belts including a stationary structure (3), an arm (4) movable with respect to a shaft (7) of the stationary structure, a torsion spring (6), a pair of dampening cones (8), (9) associated with the stationary structure and the arm, a compression spring (10) acting on the dampening cones. The mean radius of the cones is smaller than the maximum radial dimension of the torsion spring. The value "1" of the arm is correlated to the mean radius of the cones determining a frictional dampening between the cones smaller than that existing between the shaft and the rotating arm.

  • Patent number: 5618241
Abstract: A shift control device includes a movable member having a cable support for supporting the transmission cable, wherein the movable member moves as the shifting device actuates the transmission. An assist spring is provided for biasing the movable member in a direction opposite a direction of biasing of the movable member by the return spring of the transmission. The cable support supports the transmission cable such that tension exerted by the assist spring on the transmission cable remains substantially constant regardless of a position of the movable member as the shifting device actuates the transmission. In a more specific embodiment, the cable support moves the transmission cable in a straight line, and the cable support may move the transmission cable without winding the transmission cable about the cable support.

  • Patent number: 5618240
Abstract: A chain shifting apparatus senses bias of pre-set peak pedal force to incrementally move a derailleur cable in a first direction, and to store spring energy. A governor apparatus senses peak cadence to move the cable in a second direction. A cam action from a pedalled-sprocket communicates a timing instant for shifting under low chain transmitting force. A derailleur cable motion distributor communicates single cable up-shift and down-shift instruction from a finger shift and from spring-loaded automatic collet actions to route chains onto available front or rear sprocket sets.

  • Patent number: 5615739
Abstract: An apparatus and method for completing or recompleting wells for production is disclosed. The apparatus and method are particularly adapted to the completion of oil or gas wells having a plurality of production zones. In particular, the apparatus is useful for oil or gas wells having production zones which require stimulation prior to initial production of the well, or producing wells which require recompletion in order to open new zones or to reperforate and stimulate existing zones from which production has slowed down or ceased. The apparatus comprises a header spool having a pressure rating that is about as high as the burst pressure rating of the surface casing of the well. The header spool is mounted to a casing spool before a wellhead is placed on the well. The header spool has an internal passage which is at least as large as the diameter of the casing in the well. This permits an efficient completion of the well after the casing is cemented in.

  • Patent number: 5613918
Abstract: This invention relates to the field of power transmission, and more specially, to a torque responsive belt tensioner for a friction belt. Because of recent concerns for the ecology of our planet there has been a resurgence of interest in human powered vehicles (HPV). This category incudes two, three and four-wheeled vehicles. The invention answers the need-for a power transmitting apparatus that will:a) provide forward motion,b) provide a coasting mode,c) provide a braking action,d) provide a reverse. The belt drive tensioner of this invention is lightweight and simple. It includes a rigid backing plate and idler carrier positioned on a drive shaft adjacent to a drive pulley. Two belt engaging members, rollers, or perpendicular columns or projections of sufficient height to contact the exterior surface of the drive belt are carried by the rigid backing plate.

  • Patent number: 5613561
Abstract: An apparatus for sealing a first pressure environment from a second, lower pressure environment, includes a plug having a desired cross section for insertion into a barrier wall aperture shaped to receive the plug. The barrier wall has a first pressure environment on its outside surface and a second environment on its inside surface. A bearing surface on the plug bears against the wall of the aperture. A flexing member, subject to and reactive to the first pressure environment, has an outer surface providing at least a portion of the bearing surface. The flexing member, in reacting to the first pressure environment, flexes at least a portion of the bearing surface to bear more tightly against the wall of the aperture and tends to seal the first pressure environment from the second pressure environment and maintain the seal under a variety of mechanical loads. A chassis is secured within the barrier wall.

  • Patent number: 5611400
Abstract: A method of plugging holes, in particular the plugging of drill holes in earth. The method consists of inserting an auger, having a bit at the lower end and a central rod about which is formed a helical land, into the drill hole and rotating the auger to cause material to be conveyed upward and out of the drill hole. As the auger is moved downward this will cause any plugs or debris within the hole to be removed. After the auger has been inserted to a sufficient depth the rotation of the auger is reversed, and bentonite or other plugging material is poured into the drill hole about the auger. The reversed rotation of the auger will cause the plugging material to be conveyed downward along the drill hole and compacted at the bottom. As the drill hole is filled with compacted plugging material the auger is slowly removed to form a consistent reliable plug of the plugging material. A second method utilizes a tubular capsule filled with coarse ground sodium bentonite.

  • Patent number: 5611744
Abstract: A bicycle crank driven chain wheel assembly uses a special-shaped chain wheel. The chain wheel has portions of different driving radii. The portion having smaller driving radii is engaged in transmission when the bicycle runs on slopes, so that the bicycle rider can drive the bicycle with smaller force. The portion having larger driving radii carries out transmission when the bicycle runs on flat road, so that the bicycle can be speeded up. The crank is mounted in such a manner that it can rotate with respect to the chain wheel within predetermined range of angle, so as to select the corresponding portion of the chain wheel to be engaged in transmission in accordance with the resistance to motion of the bicycle or with the condition of the road on which the bicycle runs. Thus, a variable transmission can be automatically achieved corresponding to the resistance to motion of the bicycle or to the condition of the road.
